Fallout: New Vegas Patch Plans

The Bethesda Blog outlines plans to patch Fallout: New Vegas, Obsidian's new installment in the Fallout series of post-apocalyptic MMORPGs. Word is they are "currently running final testing and certification on a comprehensive patch for all three platforms," and they also mention a separate PC-specific patch that is expected sooner, saying: "In the meantime, an incremental update for PC should be going up by early next week that will fix the save corruption issues and problems with companions, as well as improve performance for NVIDIA users and resolve some issues reported with Havok."

I'm nuts for the Fallout series, so I want to get FONV so bad I can taste it. When I buy, I'm going to get the collector's version, and the Prima guide. However, I've been dealing with some other hobby projects, and an appliance repair, so I haven't spent the money. This is the first AAA title that I've wanted that I didn't buy on the day of release. All this talk about the bugs makes me glad I've waited, and it looks like I may as well wait for this patch. I appreciate the feedback on Blue's that has broken down the real issues, free of spin.

The talk about how its not gamebreaking stuff, its mostly minor and some haven't seen hardly any the entire game? Oh and the dx9 dll thing is fixed now. That was a big performance killer people were experiancing.

Reload Bug Fix. That used to drive me crazy because my favorite weapons were all single shell loaders.

I have a gut feeling that "it's not a bug, it's a feature!"

The game references that weapons below a certain point in reliability "jam". I only notice the reloading "bug" when my weapons have degraded to a certain point. I suspect that's their version of jamming guns.

It only happens to those specific weapons and it happens reproducibly by moving and reloading 100% of the time so it's obvious its a bug, not a feature.

It does this with weapons at 100% too.

Well, if you're attacking from stealth you have the time to target critical organs...

Yeah, it does kinda break the game.

Yeah, sneak attack criticals are stupid. They should be nowhere near as huge as they are now (at 100 sneak, I believe the multiplier is 7????), and they should ONLY work for melee attacks.

What, a sneaky bullet does more damage than an actual bullet?

I can two-shot Deathclaws without sneaking. Sneaking just breaks the whole game, imo. In missions where you have to be sneaky, everyone still sees you unless your sneak is literally 100, and in combat sneak basically turns you into the console with the "kill" command.

Loving playing evil. I wish there were more Legion missions, but wiping out Camp Forlorn was AWESOME.

edit : one of my favorite things in FONV is the things your character says in a speech check if you don't have the skill to do it. A comedian heckled me in the Wrangler casino, and my (failed speech) response was "Oh yeah, well your mom is ugly too! Oh yeah, I went there."

The FONV CE is a piece of shit, stay away from it.

I quite routinely kill Deathclaws in one shot. Hard/Hardcore

Sniper Rifle / Gauss Rifle. Sneak. Shoot in face. Profit (50xp worth, lol). Sneak attacks make most of what would otherwise be hard battles relatively easy. Packs of deathclaws, for instance, can easily be picked off one by one from a safe distance.

And the first time I cleared the deathclaw quarry I was using the matter modulator. Same thing. SNEAK ATTACK. From a good distance. If you're far enough away you can sneak attack, not kill the creature, and they'll be far enough away that they will only go Caution and then shortly thereafter return to their business.

When you say you have "various" balance mods does that include one that changes armor penetration values of ammo, because if that is "fixed" then you will not see the problem he has.

I encountered an issue after upgrading from and AMD to Intel quad core. The game stutters pretty bad and is actually running slower now, its odd. Other then that I have not noticed any bugs.

I have a quad Intel with SLI and have been running intensive benchmarks to figure out the issues with F:NV. As you found, I had major major stuttering as well. The first thing I did was reduce the quality to High (as opposed to Ultra). The second thing I did was get rid of the ambient music. The third thing was to increase the memory (using the .ini parameter) and finally I enabled turbo mode in the processor. This got rid of pretty much all the stuttering and the load times are fast now. They used to be in the order of 5 minutes, and now they're perfectly normal.

I'm running a Quad Core, 4GB RAM, and dual GeForce GTX 460s, (not running SLI though, since apparently Civ V doesn't like SLI). I'm also still running XP SP3. Could that be the issue?

See above, and I'm running SLI on both F:NV and Civ V without any problems (on 260s), but using Win7. Also be careful with your overclocks, make absolutely sure that your machine is in a 24/7 overclock state, as opposed to a benchmark-killer overclock state. i.e. run LinPack on ALL memory for 20 iterations or more and make sure it passes the test.

I kill deathclaws in 2-3 punches and only take any damage if I get multiple ones at the same time. Unarmed is a bit unbalanced, though (but hilariously fun once you find Pushy).

There is only one word suitable for the magnificent New Vegas... GENRE REDEFINING.

Oh and you're not supposed to fight deathclaws in this game, you're supposed to run in the opposite direction, at least that is what I do!

I don't know of any weapon besides the sniper rifle in stealth using AP ammo, or the anti-material gun using AP ammo that can kill a radscorp in generally under 2 shots even on normal, unless you've got the 50% crit damage perk + 5% crit chance perk(aka the bloody mess perk).

I know that on Very Hard, it's entirely impossible to kill a Deathclaw in one or two hits. I'm level 22 and I have to take Deathclaws out one at a time, first by crippling their legs so they can't get close to me and then having me + 2 companions shoot him in the head about 50 times.

You might wanna bring a better rifle.

There's two weapons specifically suited for killing DCs. The .50 cal anti-material rifle, and the plasma cutter with the (ehhh, forget what it's called...) mod. Both will kill a DC with one or two shots to the head, even at highest diff. You may want to slot AP rounds for the .50 cal though, as the standard rounds tend to act a bit wonky where damage is concerned. The AP rounds will take off 85-100% health in one shot, even against the prime DCs (the Mothers, the Alpha Male and the Legendary one.)

Playing a melee character now, and I think I'm just gonna avoid deathclaws. There's no way to melee them. It's just not possible. (which makes sense anyways.)

Btw, for those of you who are stuck in a quest, there's an AMAZING list of quest console codes and states at the bottom of this page:

http://fallout.wikia.com/wiki/Fallout%3A_New_Vegas_quests#Linear_Quests

Edit : By the time I was done with the side-quest that has you going to get rid of the ghouls in the factory I was sold

That's funny, that was exactly the same quest that made me go "Hey, this is awesome!" for the first time. Up till that point I'd found the game to be pretty damn mediocre. (funny enough, if you play evil, the first part of the game is FANTASTIC. FAR better than if you play a goodie two-shoes.)

I must agree that this game isn't as buggy as people make it seem. There are a lot of silly pathfinding, animation bugs, yes, but those are easily overlooked. The fact that there are a lot of those bugs made it more difficult for me to get into the game at the beginning - I kept thinking, this feels generic. By the time I was done with the side-quest that has you going to get rid of the ghouls in the factory I was sold. I thought the quest was going to be bugged to all shit at the end, without the payoff I wanted, I kept second-guessing the game. But, that quest is one of the neatest quests and I loved the payoff (though I wouldn't have minded not traipsing through the factory for a fourth time. Anyway, this game is the shit; it actually reminds me a little more of Fallout 2 in the way quests progress through the Strip, factions; for the most part is still lacking Black Isle's literary touch/pop culture touch that no one's seems to be able to get close to touching but anyway I'm liking it.

Okay I wasn't clear enough then. My apologies.

When you use VATS, it predicts how much damage you're going to do on the overall health bar. It's an average.

For giant radscorpions and deathclaws, that prediction says that I should be killing them with various weapons in one or two shots. Instead, I do almost no damage whatsoever. While I can kill them, I get overloaded at 2-3 of them at once. Obsidian tends to, in certain areas, throw more than five at the same time at you.

I was like level 28 when I discovered this, so it's not exactly like my stats were low. I peeled off from the main quest and went and did a bunch of side stuff, and when I came back I got to the mission where you could talk to the great khans' leaders to sway them to your side. One of the leaders is in a deathclaw filled quarry, and I can't see how someone level 17 or so (where you'd be if you just went through the main quest) could possibly get to the leader chick.
VATs doesn't guesstimate how much health it's going to do damage wise. At least not on the PC, maybe consoles but otherwise no. At most VATS will allow you to target specific areas of a NPC/critter to inflict damage. i.e. shooting them in the head will make it harder for them to hit you, crippling arms, will mean slower attacks and less damage, etc.

Oh and you can get to the chick in the quarry, but not wondering through the deathclaws. You simply have to go for a bit of a walk. There's a hole --- spoiler stop reading ---

in the north edge of the canyon wall, which will let you in avoiding all of the deathclaws.
