Sid Meier's Civilization V DLC Next Week

2K Games announces plans to release new DLC for Sid Meier's Civilization V next week on October 25. They will offer a Mongols Civilization and Scenario Pack that will be free to all owners of the turn-based strategy sequel as well as sales of a Babylonian Civilization Pack for $4.99 USD which was included for free with the Civilization V Digital Deluxe Edition. Here's word on the add-ons:
The Mongols Civilization and Scenario Pack calls for the strongest leaders to ride with Genghis Khan and his Mongol horsemen to establish the largest continuous land empire ever seen. Rulers lead their civilization from humble beginnings on the steppes of Asia, until all under heaven tremble at the might of the nation.

Players can continue expanding their conquests with the Babylonian Civilization Pack as the Babylonian ruler, Nebuchadnezzar II (c. 630 – c. 561 B.C.). As King of Babylon, gamers will be able to expand their empire with advanced Babylonian Bowmen to rightfully earn the title of Nebuchadnezzar the Great.

And that mindset is wrong. The group of people working on content is usually completely different from those working on patches.

And that mindset is wrong. The consumer doesn't see it that way, the consumer sees the company with it's hand out asking for more money despite their product still having unfixed issues. It's not the consumers job to care about what makes good business sense or not. If a company wants to be successful then keeping your consumers happy by supporting your products just makes good business sense by the way.

All of that being said, Firaxis has a good reputation for supporting their games so hopefully this is all a moot point.

Making new civs isn't difficult, I really doubt they had to cut any out. Users have already made several. I get what you're saying though, I think it's a bit shitty to be doing DLC while people are waiting for a patch. It's just courtesy that you hold off on that shit until you fix up the game.

And that mindset is wrong. The group of people working on content is usually completely different from those working on patches.

One group is likely mostly artists while the others is mostly developers.

It makes perfect business sense to be doing both things in parallel; nevermind the fact that they are currently intending to deliver the first patch before or at the same time as the first DLC.

It's a good game, and hopefully will get there... but I think releasing paid DLC is premature at this stage.
I know personally I have 2 different save games I have shelved waiting for the patch because of game stopping bugs.

And doesn't anyone else get bugged about paid DLC being released a month after the game?
I like DLC... but make it new additional content... not stuff that was obviously stripped out of the initial game.

Sorry, but that argument is old, tired, and wrong.

Game projects and software in general are big enough that multiple teams are often producing content for the same product.

Just because content was starting to be produced before a product was released doesn't mean it should have or could have shipped with the product -- they're on their own release schedules.

For example, did you know that the three lord of the rings movies had much of their footage shot back-to-back? But I'm sure you see why it was reasonable to not expect all the content they shot to be in the first film.

Having parallel production of additional content is simply good business sense to maximise potential revenue from a product.

People's interest in a product is maximal near its release, so it makes sense to release new content as often as possible after its release to keep sales up, and to get revenue from the existing customer base.

Ultimately, game companies are businesses, not charities, and grousing about the fact that they're being run like one is silly at best.

Now if you want to complain about something, complain about the fact that "collector's editions" have now become meaningless, with many of them not actually including all of the content available *at the point of shipping*.

Ooh controversial! Not sure you'd get many agreeing with you on Civ site forums, though I think they'd still be plenty grumpy if hookers and blow were thrown in. Personally I think Civ4-BTS is probably my favourite Civ, not counting the rose-tinted original and Alpha Centauri.

I am liking V though, but I haven't quite decided whether I like what they've taken out. On the one hand, it doesn't feel that dumbed-down and cutting time-sucking mundane stuff is a good move. On the other, some of that micro is what made learning the game in detail rewarding, some of it actually satisfying, and it's almost irritating how much less it matters exactly where you put down your city.

I do think they should be getting some major fixes out there before even announcing any paid DLC.

I purchased from D2D as well, for the free DLC. The thing is, I picked up the Digital Deluxe Edition, so I've already got Babylon and I should be getting the Mongols for free. I wonder what my free DLC will end up going toward.
They never said the DLC you would be getting for free wouldn't be free for everyone else too

The Babylonian civ gets pretty crazy tech advantages, I would think it might need to be slightly retooled for MP use.

From what I heard the exclusive civ you could use from the collectors edition didn't work in MP. So unless both players have the babylonian civ you can't use it... I hope that changes in the future because it's stupid to pay for a civ you can't use in MP.

Actually to be clear, the exclusive Babylonian civ does not work in MP at all. It doesn't matter if all players involved have access to it or not. It's explicitly not present in MP. My gf and I play MP exclusively and we're both a bit sad that we can't play the DLC civ in MP - this was not clearly advertised on the Digital Collector's edition.

On the forums, they said it's a possibility they're looking into, but I'd probably hold off on buying these new Civ DLC packs until MP is resolved if that's what you're into. I know I will be (well future paid ones anyway)....

There's still a lot of work that needs to happen for MP (none of which is really addressed in the first patch), but knowing Firaxis, it'll get there. The question is just how long til it gets there.

I'm having a real blast with the game. Sure it has a few issues - it crashes in one of my later stage games because I have 69 cities - but it's an improvement over Civ4-BTS and has already sucked away a lot of my free time. The Civilization series has always been well supported (with the exception of Colonization) and I look forward to the inevitable expansions / DLC.

As for the DLC I would assume the same holds true. You're paying for a civ to use in singleplayer... I personally like MP way better for these games despite it being hard as hell to keep a game together past 20 min or so.

I get a free DLC with my D2D purchase for this so it will be interesting to see what all that will end up being, maybe I'll get just the mongols free, like everyone else, or maybe I'll get the mongols and babs free.

Whatever the case this game is a long way off from getting more of my money. It needs major work on the MP side.

I wish they'd fix up the AI a little before moving to DLC content already, but whatever.
