12 Million WoW Subscribers

Almost two years since Blizzard announced WoW had 11 million subscribers comes a new announcement saying World of Warcraft has now reached the 12 million subscriber plateau. They explain: "This milestone was reached in the wake of the mainland Chinese launch of World of Warcraft's second expansion, Wrath of the Lich King, and also as global anticipation continues to mount for the December 7 release of the game's third expansion, Cataclysm." They also answer the inevitable questions about the methodology for tabulating these numbers: "World of Warcraft subscribers include individuals who have paid a subscription fee or have an active prepaid card to play World of Warcraft, as well as those who have purchased the game and are within their free month of access. Internet Game Room players who have accessed the game over the last thirty days are also counted as subscribers. The above definition excludes all players under free promotional subscriptions, expired or cancelled subscriptions, and expired prepaid cards. Subscribers in licensees’ territories are defined along the same rules."

I've started playing more due to Cata changes coming. The beta is a lot of fun. I hate the change to the talent trees though. Not looking forward to next week when that comes out (if it's next week).

I'm curious. When does a prepaid card go 'active'? When it's sold, or when it's tied to an account?

Because if it's the former, then they'd be doing a lot of double counting if someone buys a bunch of cards at once, right?

Still, that is a staggering number. Don't people get bored of it ever?

12M is amazing, but there's no denying their numbers have pretty much plateaued in the last few years...

Wish they'd take some of that money and turn the CGI artists loose on a 2 hour movie...

Yeah, there's going to be some real confusion for the next few weeks. But it should be fun, overall.

Funny how the game keeps growing, despite the 'hardcore' raider-nerds complaining every day how Blizzard is killing it.

Looks to me like they're handling it nicely. My wife and I recently resubscribed after a two year absence and were pleased to find it more accessible, while still challenging, than it was before. In fact, we've managed to regroup much of our old guild and are kinda starting anew with the current end-game content as preparation for the expansion.

Yeah I have to wonder how many of these actual subs vs prepaid/alt/whatever, the US numbers are supposedly stagnant according to some posters on Gamasutra who have previously revealed accurate Blizzard info.

Even if the numbers are a few MILLION off, they are still pulling in Casino-like cash flow every month.

And you know what, they deserve it. For all the crap this game gets, the fact remains nothing has been able to top it. I'm not even a huge fan of it's graphical style. But back when I played it, that did not matter because it got so many things right.

I don't really understand the grindfest, too carebear, too hardcore, blah blah complaints. The game is good because it offers a bit of something for anyone depending on what they are looking to get out of it and how much time they want to put in.

I played the vanilla release for a couple years and have taken a year long break or so before having some fun with it again when a new expansion comes out.

I'll probably do the same again...

They don't know when a card is sold. They know when it goes active, because the player plugs the card number into their system, and they do not count multiple cards active on the one account (ie an account with 6 months of time paid up with 3 cards applied is 1 account in their numbers).

They can't fudge the figures on an ongoing basis because ultimately actilizard is a publically listed company and a great deal of accounting information is visible, and there are some requirements about how they report stats like subscribers that may influence investment decisions.

Well, with millions of subscribers, they literally can't please everyone, no matter what they do. Even the slightest change is going to piss some small group off...

I assume they count only after it's tied to an account. And I would think if you had multiple cards queued up on a single account, that would count as a single subscription.

It's been a while since the 11M announcement. There had been pretty wide speculation their numbers were actually starting to come down some -- so much for that idea...

I've tried a lot of MMOs, and despite the complaining people do about it WoW is the only one that *feels* right. The art style is perfectly suited to the constraints of the genre, lower details means little on cartoon graphics, the gameplay is polished and smooth, plenty of diversions to keep you entertained. I've levelled up to 80 in fits and starts over the last two years and apart from EVE it's the only MMO I've ever been back to.

WoW's dominance isn't a fluke, it genuinely is the best all rounder out there, notwithstanding personal taste of course.

Here's a thought for you...

How many people are working at Blizzard who have been there since before WoW was released (Nov. 2004) and are not independently wealthy? I'll bet the answer is dozens if not 100s. That would annoy the living hell out of me, especially with an idiot like Kotick making over $100M in exercised options this year...

It's the Apple iProduct of MMO's. It's well polished, well funded, but ultimately not terribly deep or complex.

Not sure how many people would have alt accounts. Obviously people do, but I don't know anyone who does. Unlike EVE, where 4 out of 5 people have an alt account (number made up). I can't see much use for an alt unless you want to dual-box in PvP or something.
