Call of Duty: Black Ops Goes Stereoscopic

Activision announces that Call of Duty: Black Ops will support stereoscopic 3D on properly equipped PCs and consoles when the next installment in the military shooter series is released next month. They say this will aid immersion, though no content was created especially for the 3D version. "We haven't actually changed any art in the game as a result of 3-D," says Treyarch studio head Mark Lamia. "It's the same high-quality, high-fidelity art in both experiences. It's all engineering that's gone into that. I think people are going to be shocked when they see it because they're going to think that we crafted art or experiences for 3-D because it looks so good in 3-D."

It should solve that too; the hit point is a 3D entity and should display fine. If a game does hit detection in 2D, after perspective transformation then perhaps they'll have troubles.
What I do is to draw objects like that as a proper 3D object but scale it so that that it remains the same size in the 3D view no matter how far away it is. That approach should work fine for stereoscopic displays.
I can post the code if you like.

Gun cursor - do a ray intersection with scene, render at depth of intersection

that seemed to answer my question regarding the hit box at high scope magnification. but what about low magnification sights like the red dot? wouldnt the difference between the left and right image be great enough to present a problem with small targets? how would you address that issue?

15 years ago when I was in University, a Korean company called Kazan (I think) sent me a free pair of LCD shutter glasses because they'd seen some 3D stuff I'd put out on the internet.
It was a PCI thing which I duly plugged into my 386 DX 40. It took me all of an afternoon to get it working with my little 3D engine. People are only going on about stereoscopic stuff now and making a big deal out of the 'technical challenges' because it's being marketed heavily by the interested industries, not because it's hard.
The only problems you'll get are these:

Screen space effects
UI elements - easy, just render 2D stuff without offset
Gun cursor - do a ray intersection with scene, render at depth of intersection
Speed - Fine if you have FPS to spare.
Monitor refresh < 100 hz. Not a lot you can do about this other than get a better monitor. Older CRT monitors had the advantage there and its really slow LCD displays that have held back stereoscopic stuff.

It's one of those things you add to an engine because you're bored and have nothing better to do. Still, I like it, I just dislike hype.

sure they have 3d data but it was never presented or used in 3d. hit box stayed the same 2d area in front of the character. now if you are playing weapons with aiming sights you dont look through stereo scopes. you look through a single scope.

Left head for the left gun, right head for the right one.

glad they allow you to dual wield sniper rifles!

Probably some numb-nut marketoid who's heard about the controversy of retrofitted 2D -> 3D films, rather than ones filmed with 3D in mind in the first place and somehow thought it applied to games.

Marketoids and adminisphere people: Games already have all the 3D data needed to make stereoscopic (sorry, too many syllables for your tiny overpaid brains? my apologies) images and have had for 20 odd years ,just as SVGA monitors have been 'HD' for 20 years. Take your hype machine elsewhere please. Crap, they hear about some controversy, badly articulated during a game of golf and think they have an opinion worth sharing. Bloody pointy haired bosses.

Why would you need new content for 3D anyway, I don't see the point of that disclaimer.

sometimes it's necessary. a lot of games use 2d tricks for optimizations and effects that looks completely off in stereo. not to mention reducing quality of the assets to let them render twice without affecting the performance too much.

Interesting. I have not tried 3d yet? Is it the same 3d that was in movie theaters 50 years ago? Or is this something new?

An open mind hears both sides of the story.

This announcement's mostly fluff, but games can have rendering problems in stereo mode (shadows not rendering correctly, skyboxes at wrong depth, reflections not rendering correctly etc). Most don't, they're just saying they've adhered to making the game look right in 3-D.

But yeah, the effect is what it is.. it's not like anyone gonna say, "Hey that's so much MORE 3-D than THAT game..." *boggle*

Good to know in advance though, it's nice for us who use it when the game has no issues.
