They scrapped the downloader after going out of beta. Now it's only a simple download link.
Also, the download servers support multiple connections, resume, etc. So you can use your favourite downloader (I use DownThemAll) to hit the full download speed of your connection (it's hosted on a CDN, so it should be able to handle pretty much anything). Further, all your games are listed on your account's page, and you can re-download anything at any time. The extras are separate links from the installers, so you can skip them or grab only the ones you're interested in, again with resume and multiple connections and re-downloading.

a self-extracting/installing container with no strings attached

It's one of the best installers for a download store I've seen. An integrity check, and then just a single page with the ability to set the installation directory and whether to add icons to the desktop or not.

If the installer is super large it's split into 2GB sections (you just download them all into the same directory and run the first one which is an .exe), which is a bit of a pain but I can understand why it's important to work around problems with some people's setups. The extras are always just .zip files.

The whole system is simple, and works perfectly without requiring any extra software or anything. I really think it's the best example of how a DD store should work. Of course, they don't have to worry about updates to their packages, which simplifies things hugely (and admittedly, the few times they've had to update an installer, it hasn't been done very elegantly).

It's just a shame that they don't view the download service as quite as valuable a part of the site as they should. Even after all the complaints arising from their marketing stunt, they're still saying that having downloads disappear or be deleted again in the future shouldn't bother their customers, since the installers are DRM-free and everyone should have backups. Which is true, but misses the point that it would still suck, and being able to download both now and in the future is a good portion of why I'm paying them money.

But at 50%-off, it's more than worth the money. I'm just not sure why you wouldn't wait for a 50%-off sale on all their games, if you've already waited 5 years to buy it anyway.

Arcanum is a spiritual sequel to the Fallout series

its excellent overall, although there are issues.. the combat can be exploited to hell and back (it probably fits with others descriptions of "sucking", but in my experience it allowed me to easily win fights that shouldnt have been won, technically - so yes, dont use real time combat unless you want freaky bullshit)

also, sadly the end sequence of the game seemed very rushed and devolves into a series of uninspired brawls - however its a minor issue in terms of the game as a whole

the execution of the evolved SPECIAL based system (fallout's rpg-rules engine) its definitely a high point.. how the game tracks all kinds of variables, and also all the various possible solutions for things

btw - in-game drops and secrets and so forth tend to favor the steampunky side over the magic side, FYI

Yepp, you just download the game in a self-extracting/installing container with no strings attached. And what you do with the installer afterwards, it is your descision: delete it, keep it, install the game on every other computer you can think of, whatever ... no DRM, no restrictions. Just the game and the extras, that come with the purchase.

If you haven't played Arcanum yet, do yourself a favor and grab it. $2.99 is a steal for one of the best CRPGs ever.

You can get the latest unofficial patch here: http://rpgcodex.net/phpBB/viewtopic.php?t=39612

And the high-res patch here: http://www.terra-arcanum.com/downloads/arcanum/highres/HighRes1.1a.exe

I was going to get it, since 3 bucks is a steal, and turns out I already bought it from them at some point, apparently. Hehe.

Thanks for the links!

I stand by I76 blowing. Blowing. Oh good, let's have WWI/II style dogfighting on one plane. Blows! Why would I possibly want to replace Z with awesome style?

However, I'll finally get JA2, for the fourth time, but it'll be nice to no longer need my CDs, especially as I'll play it on the netbook. And I'll go for some Tex Murphy. I'll regret that in under 10 minutes, but man, I loved me some Tex Murphy.

Arcanum had some of the worst CRPG combat around.

That depends on whether you play it in turn-based or real-time. The real-time combat is a total clusterfuck, with enemies running around and attacking at ridiculous speeds. Turn-based is much more enjoyable.

Most of the other stuff was well done, though. And it has one of my favorite scores (or at least theme).

Good luck hunting the mythical beast of Stillwater!

I-76 was awesome back when. I was going to pick it up, but one of the GOG'ers reviewed and said it was buggy. Anyone have it and know if it works with Win 7?

Arcanum is pretty damn awesome all round, but the setting is exquisite. Victorian steampunk meets D&D fantasy was a great idea done well.

After reading your post Jerykk I decided to look it up and I liked what I saw. So decided to buy it. After all 2.99 ain't that much. I never heard about this game before, but seems to be very praised.
