TF2 In-Game Store and Steam Wallet Launch

Steam News announces that the Steam Wallet is now live, along with in-game transactions, as a new Team Fortress 2 Mann Co. Store is now in business to allow the purchase of in-game items from within the teamplay shooter sequel. They say this is the first of many upcoming Steamworks in-game stores where Steam Wallet funds can be spent, and a new TF2 Mannconomy FAQ explains the new in-game economics. Speaking of economics, Team Fortress 2 is now on sale for 50% off. This also entails a new Team Fortress 2 automatic patch with the following changes.

I don't really have a problem with this - or DLC. What I have a problem with is that the hats are too expensive. I saw one going for almost $20. For a digital hat?

Get it down to $2 and we'll talk.

That's the beauty and risks of crowdfunding. When it works it works really well, Natural Selection 2, Amnesia, Forzen Synapse (Bought it also, bloody great game), Minecraft to name a few, but you are also taking a risk as well since there's really no guarantees other than people's good will.

However right now the story of indies making it through with that payment method, which I approve since it's a great way of funding yourself and take a pulse for the community, than those falling through.

Obviously you will find bad apples, but you'll find them everywhere in life. But right now PC gamers are mass migrating into the indie community. Most indie forums I belong to see a tremendous growth in users each day. Mainstream gaming for the PC is, as eraser put it, dying very quickly and indies are now making AAA-type games faster and easier than a couple of years ago. I have no doubt that in a few years time most PC gaming will be based in indies.

Yeah, but sidenote: The real great games (original CS , without source and without the 1.6 and beyond hitbox stunt they pulled) as well as the original DoD (before source and steam) is unplayable because steam refuses to give you control over what game version you can get. Steam holds these games prisoner and only allows THEIR version to be played at any one point in time. Don't agree with 1 of their changes, in other games you just don't patch and run the old servers, in steam you are soul-bound to live with the crap they patch in.

Even better, when they turned DoD from a free mod to a pay-for deal they removed all traces of the original DoD downloads from steam and from the interwebs. Now you are forced to play DoD: Source, as you can NOT get any older dod to run online. SUCKS

I still have the original half-life 1 with all the relevant patches BEFORE they converted it all to some steam bound shizzle and it plays superbly in lan. But i never thought i would lose access to the old CS and DoD versions (where good bots existed) (Note, it works fine for CS but not for DoD where i can't find the "non-steam" original HL1 download for anymore.)

If there wasn't a very strong indie scene right now producing AAA titles I would agree with you. However since the PC indie scene is strong and growing exponentially each day, I'm not too worried about the mainstream publishers, Valve included, fucking up PC gaming left and right since I no longer buy any mainstream game anyway, most of the best games I've played this year were indies.

There is a failsafe device for PC gaming, and it's called the indie scene. In fact if PC gaming went 100% indie it would actually be a good thing for everyone.

PC gaming ain't dead, it's being reborn to be what it was 15 years ago.

Giving hats stat bonuses is not on any level a good idea. Hats never drop. The odds of anyone actually finding a hat they need to complete a set are about the same odds as Hell Mephisto has of dropping Tal's Armor. You cannot realistically craft the hat you need because a) it costs a metric fuckton of metal to craft ANYthing and b) every class has about a thousand hats you can randomly craft from.

I've always enjoyed these TF2 updates in the past and I really like a lot of the new weapons (all fairly well balanced) but making hats anything but charming little distractions is a horribad idea. Horribad.

You're not the only one hating it.

Still, hop on www.indiedb.com and browse the many projects there for the PC. No doubt you'll find a huge amount of crap games being made but I am willing to bet you'll find at least 20 or more games you'll get really interested in.

Indies used to take a long time to make a game, not so today. The tools to make a game cheaper and quicker are becoming more common.

but i don't want to wait 5 years for that to happen - The indy scene is also high risk low return kind of stuff - with the exceptions of stuff like MineCraft (which i decline to call a "game") Indys have the problem that no bank finances them and if you go to a publisher, then you are no longer indy

But maybe i should have said "this is the death of mainstream PC gaming for people who don't want to be nickel and dimed for everything" - Heck it already started to happen with these horrid DLC's that don't add more than 1-2 hours of entertainment to a game but cost 10$

I guess i am just getting old but i absolutely hate this micro payment nonsense.

Soon you buy new weapons in MW3 instead of finding them, you pay for ammo, and you pay for respawn, heck you even pay for sending voice chat shit, and receiving it of course.

Whats that, you don't want to be disconnected each map change = 1$
You want loot drops every hour instead of every 3 hours = 1$
You want to change your character name = 1$

I like how they brag about TF2 being only the first game to use it. Actually the general "YAY MICROTRANSACTIONS!" vibe of the Steam news post is rather annoying itself.

EDIT: just connected to play. This in-game trading option is ruining the gameplay. People now just hangs inside spawn rooms offering or asking for items to trade. Congrats Valve, you really screwed TF2 this time. >:(

Getting free game updates couldn't go on forever. This seems a fine addition to the game to me. You can always get the items the hard way. Your not forced to purchase.

If they want to charge for hats, clothes, and items that don't effect a single stat related to gameplay, that's fine with me.

But when you allow people to purchase items that give them an edge (or simply change their mechanics) that's always baaaad stuff.

I don't really give a shit about hats...

The main game is still there.

Did the whiners read the FAQ? Sounds pretty benign to me. If you like hats (or flying ponies for $25) then go ahead and spend some money.

omfg I just realized the new items added are ITEM SETS complete with ITEM SET BONUSES.

edit: Okay this is my 3rd edit... Yes it does look like the set items which confer bonuses are purchasable. You may now consider me outraged. Pretty shitty stuff here Valve.
