I don't really care for Halo, it's just not my thing but if there are so many better FPS franchises then it's surprising some of you can even find the time in your busy PC FPS playing schedules to seek out the console topics and brag about it(but never actually name those titles I noticed). I haven't seen a decent FPS franchise on the PC in 5 years so I'd love to know about these mystery titles because I actually prefer playing FPS on the PC.

Granted, there may be 10 better FPS games, but there is no "out of the box" game on PC or Console that approaches the level of craftsmanship, featureset and functionality of the last 3 games in this series. And SDK isn't content until someone sinks some serious hours into it. It still has internet connection free LAN play!

I feel like a well meaning preacher or obscure band fanboy, it's not that I think you are all wrong to hate on it, I just want everyone to feel the love! I know I am! In fact, time to cease pointless proselytizing play!

^This ... and I'd say not just PC, but on consoles as well. I never go the Haloz, always thought they were the suxorz.

Nice bait - I won't take - but there are at least 10 FPS games on the PC that are better than all Halo games put together.

New cool Halo game is cool. An unscrupulous retailer sold it too me on friday when I was a little tipsy after a wedding, poor me!

After one play through on Heroic and some dabblin' in the other modes, I can confidently say that in the context of what it is in it's time and place, yes, it is worth full marks for content, quality, and if you like Halo, entertainment. If you don't like Halo go boot up Quakeworld and tell some kids to get off your lawn.

The best reviews are usually the ones without a score at the end, it's the silly paragraphs before the pointless score that count.

No game has ever been perfect, nor will there ever be a perfect game. Be wary of any review saying otherwise.

Does the Bob Marley version of Rock Band come with any new peripherals? Maybe an electronic Camberwell Carrot? Hehehe.

That magazine is still around, they just relaunched it a little while back. I believe they do the same review scheme they did before with the 3 different people conclusions.

I personally like the Ars Technica reviews with their recommendation at the end skip/rent/buy. Not to mention these days I just check reviews for more info about the game not for the review scores.

I personally don't like 100 point review scales for that reason, not to mention the following sort of question it raises: how much better is an 82 than a 81? My preference is a 10 point scale where a top-flight game indeed deserves a 10.

Isn't that just a matter of scale though? 8/10 or 80/100, people will continue to place their own buying metric somewhere in the upper echelon of either and we're back to square one. I try to simply ignore the scores and read the text personally as more often than not a high score does not tell you many important things about the game. Scores are too easy to "bend" both by the industry and the consumer to some extent.

I also enjoy the aggregate opinion. It's less necessary now thanks to the internet, but Computer Games Review was my favorite magazine when it existed. Each game was reviewed by three people, and their scores were combined for the overall (I think, maybe there was no overall.)

After a few issues you'd get the hang of who you tended to agree with most, another nice bonus.

I enjoyed that the NYT reviewer admitted to being a PC gaming snob. I also expect most people here to think he doesn't know what that term means because he enjoyed Halo.

I find it pretty comical that games get a score of 100.....that means no game will ever be better than THAT game....

I have a hard time with that rationale for avoiding giving a game a 100 score. If you cap your top score at any point below, be it 99, or 98 or 95, you are saying the same thing when you give out whatever is your maximum score.

Anyway, I don't think that's what a 100 should mean: It's not the best game ever, simply that it's the best game it could be given the technology and genre.

I personally don't like 100 point review scales for that reason, not to mention the following sort of question it raises: how much better is an 82 than a 81? My preference is a 10 point scale where a top-flight game indeed deserves a 10.

That canceled zombie horror game had bot commands. Come on valve, put some rudimentary bot commands in L4D2, like Form up so they can actually help rescue you instead of standing around like idiots.
