ArcaniA: Gothic 4 Demo This Month

DreamCatcher Games and JoWooD Entertainment say we can expect both PC and Xbox 360 playable demos for ArcaniA: Gothic 4 on September 24. Word is: "The demo comprises the first two hours of the game and shows the beginning tutorial level on Feshyr Island featuring selected quests. Fight off demons, hone your skills and prepare for a bloody battle fueled by vengeance. Get your first taste of ArcaniA: Gothic 4." The game is also now available for preorder, with JoWooD eShop, GamersGate, and Impulse offering 15% discounts, and on Steam where it is bundled with a free copy of Gothic 3.

Or could it be some people get ticked off if someone tells them to buy something for more than they could get it for elsewhere with no tangible benefit?

GOG has tangible benefits over Steam.

1) You get bonus artwork, wallpapers, soundtracks, etc.
2) You can save the installers to disc or anywhere else you want so if GOG goes down, you can still install your games.
3) You can install the games wherever you want, as opposed to one directory.
4) GOG games are completely standalone and have no DRM so you have more flexibility when it comes to mods, particularly those mods that use custom executables.

GOG is easily the best digital distribution service. Their only downside is their small selection.

Now Divebomb just showed me a better deal on Impulse which saves me a few dollars over the Steam deal...so now I'll look at Impulse.

No DRM is a massive benefit, that's what we disagree on I guess. You don't need to treat me like an idiot with an agenda because you don't care about DRM... good for you for not doing so I guess, I hope that attitude works out for you. I was simply saying there are alternatives to Steam and they may be a better deal because of this and that.

Like I said, if you disagree then buy it where you fucking want.

Ordinarily I'd say yes...but what are the extras I get on GOG? All I saw were wallpapers, manuals and avatars as extras on GOG. Nothing I'd say that was worth me not getting it on Steam. What did I miss?

For 19.99 on Steam I get both Gothic 2 and 3 in a bundle.

I will certainly buy Gothic 1 from GOG...I can't get it on Steam anyway.

I don't know man, Gothic 3 is $15 on it's own, I would say the extra $5 is so worth it for no DRM that it's insanity to do otherwise, but I am not everyone and people are not the same. If you don't care about such things then of course do as you like.

I have over 30 games on Steam already...why would I care about Steam's DRM for Gothic 3 at this point? It's always running in my taskbar anyway.

If all you're trying to do is promote your anti-Steam campaign, you'll have to find supporters elsewhere. $20.00 for 2 games versus $15 for one game is not a 'deal'...its pointless overspending.

All so I can beat my chest and proudly proclaim that I didn't buy it on Steam? GOG does not have the better deal.

the game world feels a lot more realistic and awesome in gothic3 because of this.

I thought it felt a lot more generic. Gothic 3 suffered from a severe lack of memorable NPCs and towns. They tried to cram too many towns, factions and characters into the game so they ended up all being underdeveloped.

"I just finished Gothic 3 a few minutes ago. A very weak ending but that's no surprise as it was clearly rushed. I played it only with the latest community patch and it was excellent. It's interesting people mention that the map was too big - quite often I was thinking "I like how they fit so much into such a small map, it's very handy"."

gothic, gothic2/exp and risen are all a lot smaller maps with much more dense population of towns/people/stuff/shit. the game world feels a lot more realistic and awesome in gothic3 because of this. you have to really go out and explore, and it feels less like you're being lead around the map with the bigger world. when you're exploring in risen it's almost impossible not to find everything, and it doesn't really feel like you're finding things for yourself, but just running into the next things after the next. still a great game though, but gothic3 is so much more exciting to explore.

love gothic3. easily my favourite from the series. hopefully they'll really open it up again with risen2. the arcania world looks to be pretty big aswell

Well I'm not in Europe, and I haven't found Steam to be more expensive than my other options.

Amazon is out of the question:

a) Because I don't want/need a box.

b) I'd need to pay courier shipping which would push the price up past Steam even if the base cost is cheaper.

Pass, can't support a publisher who steals IPs especially from one of the best independent RPG makers around today.

So... you don't buy any non-indie games? Most publishers own their IPs. It's very rare for a developer to own any franchises. That's not to say I like Jowood or have any hope for Arcania. I'm just saying there are better reasons to avoid buying this game.

The only advantage to buying Gothic on GOG is that they have Gothic 1(so I will probably get that there).

Gothic bundle on Steam is Gothic 2 and 3 for $19.99. GOG does not have Gothic 3 for purchase.

Steam's DRM is not a problem for me so it means nothing apart from me buying the game somewhere else than I'm accustomed.

Risen, I have been able to find out, is region locked locked for me on Steam and only available digitally from the website...where the cost is 34 pounds and not USD.

And they say living on a tropical island is 'paradise'...

Thanks for all the info from StingingVelvet and Jerykk.
