DNF Next Year

During Randy Pitchford's introduction of Duke Nukem Forever at PAX the Gearbox boss spoke effusively about their enthusiasm over participating in the game's development and fulfilling all the goals for it. He says DNF is currently in the polishing phase, but a glitch in the streaming audio made it difficult to make out if he said it was due this year or next year. There is an interview with Randy on WSJ.com that repeats the polishing comment, and does nothing to clarify the release date, saying both "Gearbox hopes to release the game next year" and "The game is currently expected to ship in 2010." A later interview with Steve Gibson seems to clarify this, as he says they are very excited to ship the game next year. The WSJ also quotes Pitchford saying an announcement regarding the future of the Duke IP will be made on Sunday at Gearbox's PAX panel.

Meaning that it's pretty silly to think that Gearbox would completely overhaul the fundamental shooting mechanics of the game to a cover based shooter, especially since you insist that the game is being pushed out in an "awfully fast timeframe".

It was a jestful supposition to make light of consolization in most franchises these days, as in it wouldn't surprise me to see one in the game especially after hearing about the regenerating health mechanic. I don't think it's even necessarily "silly" to think that you might see a cover system in a shooter developed primarily for a console. In fact it's more common than not these days.

The footage where Duke goes "Fuck... another puzzle" Was leaked back in April from gametrailers. The new footage is from PAX and is all a bunch of shakey cam stuff with no actual audio. Meaning that it's pretty silly to think that Gearbox would completely overhaul the fundamental shooting mechanics of the game to a cover based shooter, especially since you insist that the game is being pushed out in an "awfully fast timeframe".

This will be a bargain bin purchase for me at best.

Stop now before making a bigger fool of yourself. There's indeed a difference between "This might be fun" and "This game will suck", the latter being basically what the quote above implies.

Okay, first off pointing out where I might have done the same thing is not a defense any more than Hitler bringing up slavery, and second off there is a big difference between "this should be good based on the property and developer" and "THIS WILL SUCK BECAUSE I SAID SO."

In other words, do as I say and not as I do? Hypocritical and you're just introducing a straw man at the end there as no one even used the words you're quoting, you're literally making it up. You offered an opinion and I did exactly the same thing. I didn't say the game was going to suck. Stop inventing discussion just because you don't share that opinion, I never said you weren't allowed to think the game will be fun and that its a must buy.

That footage was out back in April.

They said they're shipping next year, not that they're taking another year to ship. There's a big difference in those two statements. You want to be optimistic fine no one said you couldn't be but don't tell people that they shouldn't be skeptical

I don't even know what the fuck that means. Gearbox were handed a game that had a ton of work done on it and they are still taking at LEAST the industry standard 18 months on top of that to finish the game. How is that a quick release? Nothing you said makes it a fact that the game is being thrown out for a quick buck.

Making vague Michael Pachter predictions doesn't make you any more believable. Even a broken clock is right twice a day.

*sees incredibly specific news piece and makes vague prediction then champions his supposed insider knowledge*

Since this a whole new developer with a track record of actually releasing games shouldn't they get a pass for at least a decade before releasing? I am curious on what Gearbox is adding or are they just polishing and bug testing?

Gearbox have had it for a year, it was supposedly almost done before that, and it's not even coming for another year. That hardly seems quick to me.

Also, another tidbit we noticed during the streaming coverage of the show is that the game will use a regenerating health system, or regenerating ego, as that is what the health in the game is called

Care to place a wager on a cover system too?

People have no reason to give this a blank slate and Gearbox is not exactly the Valve of FPS games so people have every right and good reason to be skeptical. I remember watching a web show where the guy went to 3d Realms and saw the game firsthand.

He didn't look very excited about it. Also, the gameplay looked boring to shoot stuff.

I am optimistic about entertaining content otherwise, however.
