Dawn of War II - Retribution Announced

THQ announces Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War II - Retribution, a standalone expansion for their sci-fi real-time strategy sequel they expect to release for Windows PCs in the first quarter of next year. Word is Retribution will allow you to choose between several races in the solo campaign, as they say: "Taking place years after the events in Dawn of War II: Chaos Rising, this title allows players to choose their perspective with the first multiple-race single player campaign in the Dawn of War II series. The first race to be revealed is the savage Orks, but no matter which race is chosen players will be taken on an epic journey through each story arc, revealing the answers to many questions left open in previous Dawn of War titles." They also add: "As well as the single player campaign, Retribution will feature new multiplayer units, maps and an entire new playable faction when it ships." The news is accompanied by a gameplay trailer which is also embedded below.

Funny, "Cookie-cutter" is almost how I described Starcraft 2 to a T. After playing Company of Heroes and DoW2 I have found myself incredibly bored with single player SC2. It literally plays like an expansion pack from 1998, just with a pretty cutscene engine.

You're welcome to your opinion but I have to say it feels pretty misinformed in this case and doesn't feel like you played much of what you're commenting on. The SC2 singleplayer is probably the best we'll see in the industry for a long time. It's a giant campaign with secret missions, side missions, incredibly well done achievements and a staggering amount of variety. There was nothing cookie cutter about it. The only thing that comes close really is Company of Heroes.

I'm no Blizzard fanboy but Relic could learn a thing or two making an RTS campaign instead of some silly GrimDark Hero Squad RTS with some of the worst professional voice acting imaginable.

This game royally sucks, i got the original dawn of war II and barely ever played. Have over 1000 hours played in COH, 2000 victorys soon.

It's GFWL , and i did a big mistake getting it. You cant even find people to play the fucking campaign without knowing someone. It's a real messy system that needs to be boycotted, i did not buy the expantion and i will boycott this as well.

Made the same mistake about the canon... First encounter was Space Hulk, got me intrigued, but then there was no access to books or any other info and somehow I`ve written this universe off (`Kinda cool, got potential, these gothic ships are awesome...but...dunno...commissars & orcs? "bolters?" wtf?...nah, that won`t work`).

And so I left it for many years, until picking one of the novels, and only because it was a library and I was mega bored. Thought it`s gonna be another "written on commission" rubbish...but boy, was I wrong

Completely hooked now...(mid Horus Heresy). My friend - it`s anything but cheesy, once you get over few things (that actually make perfect sense after some reading). Also, incredibly coherent (over so many millenia!) and GRIM!.. So ok, humans mostly win, but it`s not set in stone... corruption lurks everywhere

I don't understand though how you can like the gameplay in Company of Heroes but not Dawn of War 2. They're pretty similar.

If you mean the multiplayer, no one really has a problem with that. I can't speak for him but when I bitch about DoW2, its about the singleplayer. Dawn of War 2 isn't even a real RTS in singleplayer, it's like some bizarre mashup of a poor mans Diablo and some budget Hero RTS for 10 year olds. You control extremely limited numbers of troops at best. The only "strategy" is basically finding cover and item pickups. The expansion was an improvement and return to form in some respects but after the base games SP campaign should have been free.

Company of Heroes had some "squad" missions but for the most part missions would open up after an introductory and allow you to make/control enough units to form some measure of a strategy game.

They released the multiplayer in a horrifically broken state for DoW II with a show stopper bug that made units permanently eat population cap. Then they didn't bother patching it for a full 2 months. Relic has good core mechanics but tends to fail at balance and QA (I don't think they even bother testing before pushing stuff out the door.)

Well at least you admit it's a good game. If you need DoW2 to be a standard RTS in singleplayer then of course you will be disappointed... I like RTS and other genres though, including tactical RPGs, so DoW2 is an insanely good combination for me... love it.

The first expansion was even better than the main campaign too, so I have high hopes for this one.

Just curious, given that there is an absolute shit-ton of "fluff" for the 40k universe, and it touches several different genres, what do you find "cheesy" about it? Just not a sci-fi fan?

It's not that hard to understand. 40K runs on the idea of taking refuge in audacity at every turn, it's always displeased the demographic that doesn't like that philosophy applied to worldbuilding and storytelling.

Doesn't make it less awesome.

To me you might argue that Company of Heroes had a better campaign, missions were varied, the presentation was excellent, and the story worth fallowing. But DoW2 campaign has absolutely nothing on CoH or SC2 campaigns. The story was almost nonexistent, and the missions consisted of either walking trough pathways on the map, killing everything on the way to the boss fight at the end, or defend some location. This to me is "Cookie-cutter".

Sure SC2 has the older style of gameplay but I found each mission to be unique and fun. I got trough SC2 campaign and was satisfied, and while I enjoyed DoW2 and got the expansion, and will probably get this one too, I was disappointed with it after the excellence that was CoH (except Valor I got it for $10 and I still thought the content was severely lacking.) But even without CoH before it the DoW2 campaign was ok, but just not that interesting.

Both expansions singleplayer components should have been free after the con job that was the grindathon, cookie-cutter DoW2 "campaign".

For 60 bucks you get 1/3 of a story, 12 year old gameplay, marginally competitive in-game graphics, spiffy in-engine cutscenes, and an admittedly robust multiplayer offering. But for single-player, I found it to be underwhelming.

Any word on what the new race is or what the new units are?

Can't say I'm excited about this game, the MP side feels ...simple. I feel like they need more units, more upgrades, more commanders, etc to make the matches interesting.

Never been interested in SP so meh on that.

Hopefully they'll add new commanders, maybe the ability to swap out powers so that everyone using the force commander doesn't use the exact same powers. It'd be fun to be able to customize more of the units so that your army was the same as everyone elses army in most respects.

Just make it all more diverse. It gets boring so fast. And make unranked games earn rank points. The rank points thing drives me nuts. Your auto match system is annoying. You get linked to slow ass hamster wheeled computers with shit pings all the time and it makes the game frustrating to play. If players can create their own games they can see who is involved and kick slow ass losers out so they can ruin someone else day.

Just make it fun for crying out loud. Playing this game MP is like watching caramel flow out of a jar, just make it fun.

Violence, naked force, has settled more issues in history than any other factor, and the contrary opinion is wishfull thinking at its worst. Breeds that forget this basic truth have always paid for it with their lives and freedoms.

That's good news, I was really hoping that the next expansion would feature a real RTS single player campaign, and not a tactical RPG.

I just hope that they don't go the easy route and reduce the campaign essentially to a long series of skirmish matches as in Dark Crusade/Soul Storm. In the original DoW and Winter Assault they had the right balance; a campaign that plays like the multiplayer game, but that also has a strong story and scripted missions. CoH also got it right.

Put Relic on something worthwhile like Homeworld 3 or Cumpany of Heroes:Vietnam or something.

Poor job on the trailer. I wish those that own(new expansion) could use those units in mp or at least hero of new race in last stand playing with anyone who has any version of dow2. Also this expansion does not look like more than $20 price level. If relic charges more I will definitely be waiting till price falls, I am not retarded.

Singleplayer is definitely up my alley as well but unfortunately I'm not thrilled about what they've done with multiplayer either. What I'm REALLY looking forward to at this point is the next major base game release.
