Out of the Blue

We're looking forward to some summer television this evening with the return of Weeds and the debut of The Big C. I'm a little surprised myself at my interest in the latter, considering how close to home the cancer topic hits at the moment, but it looks like it has a different approach, and I'm curious to see how that plays out. The other TV experience we've been greatly enjoying is The Pillars of the Earth, the Starz miniseries based on Ken Follett's novel. The series and its themes are pretty epic, and it provides a great showcase for Ian McShane.

Let me guess - you pirated it - a pay to watch channel.

How surprising.
I think HBO.com had its episodes online.

Think of it like torrenting except that you max your downstream on every single file you want and it's all automated if you put some time into initial setup.

Interesting. Unfortunately, I haven't owned a video game console since Atari 2600 and SickBeard seems to be Windows only.

XBMC is open source software available for many platforms, check it out. Ignore the Xbox portion of the name, it long ago stopped having anything to do with the console. It's basically just a great media center interface. SickBeard is written in Python and is definitely not Windows only

I know you can download most series nowadays... i use myp2p.eu for hockey streams during the season.

I kinda enjoyed The Pacific, it was emotional , Rami Malek really did a great job i was really attached to his character, PFC Merriell 'Snafu' Shelton , but i agree that band of brothers had more punch to it. They were both different , there was barely any p.o.w.'s in the pacific theater.

BoB was rad! The Pacific wasn't that good compared to it though. I even made a poll about it when it ended in http://aqfl.net/?q=node/8095 ... People thought The Pacific was worse than BoB.

I could'nt agree more.
I would go further and say it was a mess.
Referencing 4 books made for a messy structureless badly cast snooze fest. ( much of the cgi was impressive though )

I tried reading "Pillars of the Earth" years ago & gave up.(I never give up on books)

Sorry for sounding so grumpy, maybe a lean tv script has made it better.

Breaking Bad is the absolute best thing on TV nowadays. Can't believe I have to wait nearly a year to see what happens after that ending to Season 3.

Bah, you don't need that if you got Internet. [grin] I know people who got rid of their TVs because of the Internet. BTW, you can use satellite and others for those non-broadcast channels.

Usenet + SickBeard my friend, I haven't seen a commercial in years. I used to do the torrent thing until I got tired of tinkering with RSS regex to automate the downloading and swapped over. With an XBMC box your significant other will be happy too since it dumbs down a lot of the complexity.

I think you got out just in time. Seasons 1, 2, and maybe 3 were the best.

The show has gotten progressively darker since then, straying from the cheery "soccer mom selling bags to her gated community friends."

I'm not saying the past 2 seasons were poor, but I don't think I'd say it got better since then.

But that's just my opinion.

I really liked seasons 4 and 5. The ending of 5 really has me excited for next season tonight!

I enjoyed the Starz series Spartacus, but cheezus that show was out there. They turned up the "blood" dial to 11, I think it's bloodier at times than the film 300. A fair bit of nudity as well.

Damn straight, man. And the dialog was reminiscent of Deadwood's, blending the vaguely poetic and the profusely profane.

Too bad Starz doesn't do online episodes.

You can watch them through the streaming on Netflix (or any Starz shows that are on currently). It's definitely worth the cost of the membership if you don't already have one.
Well, I don't like subscription. I'd prefer on demand payments since I don't watch many movies and TV shows. That is why I only use over the air (OTA).

Wait, you're skipping the Jersey-Bowl between the Jets and Giants over who is the real owner of the new stadium tonight?

Build a fire in the back yard, throw all the Giants stuff in there.

I'll be checking in with the game, but it's kind of sad that they played into this rivalry over the stadium to reschedule the Giants/Jets from the traditional third game of the preseason to the first (so they can both play in the first NFL game there). Preseason football kind of sucks to start with, but the first game is always the worst, with a lot of starters sitting out, the rest going a quarter or less, and a bunch of other guys getting to play before they get cut this week.

They can say what they want, but this game isn't for bragging rights, it's for gagging rights.

And either way, for me it will always be Giants Stadium.
