StarCraft II is Year's Biggest PC Game Launch

StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty sold more than a million copies in 24 hours and 1.5 million copies over the first 48 hours of availability, announces Blizzard. They say this makes the real-time strategy sequel the biggest PC game launch of the year, and that this sets a record "for fastest-selling strategy game of all time."

So 1440 minutes in 24 hours...

That's 1041 copies a minute, or 17 copies a second?

What is planned for paid dlc? A few ppl have mentioned it but I don't think I've seen anything specific.

And am I the only one that sees the irony of mw2 being a betrayal to pc gamers....then this game, which seems to have the same issues, is the savior?

But do the issues they have in common/share equally hinder their respective experiences, one being a PC-only RTS and one being a cross-platform FPS? I'd say no.

That's not to say that I'm not put off by Blizzard in the few areas where SCII has taken a step back.

PC gaming isn't dying, but if this game is supposed to be the harbinger of a healthy industry, the title that makes people take a good look at PC gaming again... we're in a lot of trouble.

Funny how the only people complaining about Starcraft 2 are those that haven't played it and claim they won't buy it.

Excellent game. Finished all the SP missions and achieves on Normal last night. Now to move onto Challenges, Hard mode and some Multiplayer.

Ok I'll take the bait, why exactly? Obviously Blizzard games are going to sell well no matter what is the point I'm assuming?

Yes, purchasing a game you genuinely enjoy is totally the same thing as mind control Rolleyes Why don't you just say you don't like Starcraft? That's not a criminal offense or something. You don't have to paint everyone else as sheep to get across the point that you don't like Starcraft. There's plenty of popular things I don't like and I'm not afraid to say so. Are you that insecure?

Not really intended to be a lure, or even a troll... but it's because the success of this game broadcasts (with flashing lights) that 1) this industry is driven financially by brand recognition and 2) gameplay is ultimately less important than re-enchanting the gaming public with antiquated game design.

Fair enough, I wouldn't necessarily disagree with those points even.

Why don't you just say you don't like Starcraft?

It's not that he doesn't like Starcraft. Looking at his previous posts he has a self imposed boycott over the lack of LAN, 1/3rd of a game, same game with better graphics, etc.

Basically he sees everyone else enjoying it, but rather than caving in and joining the masses, he'll posture up and be a hater instead.

Are you people convinced yet that VGChartz makes their numbers up out of thin air?

1.8 million in one day minus Korea vs. 1.5 million in two days worldwide....hrmm....

PC Gaming itself will never die, unless the PC dies altogether.
But PC Gaming is already not even close to what it was a few years ago anymore and thus dead as it once was. That wouldnt be a problem if it was just changing as in getting better, but its actually getting worse and worse. Gameplay getting simpler and simpler, features getting cut each release, graphics being worse or max. as good as 3 years ago, content getting less and less, prices going up, patronizing getting more and more (gameplay-wise and DRM-wise), etc, etc.

For me SC2 is no real PC game either. Its somewhere between console port and real PC game. Most of the game is hype anyway.
I have given up on waiting for BIS to come back to their senses and do a real ArmA 2 successor.

When a game company consistently delivers high quality fun games, the gamer generally establishes some trust. There's nothing wrong with buying on impulse from a company who has a great track record. Give it a break.

Ahh, one of those people. Fair enough, his loss I don't think SC2 is the best game on the platform or even the best game I've played in the past few years but it's undoubtedly an enjoyable experience well worth the money.

For me SC2 is no real PC game either. Its somewhere between console port and real PC game. Most of the game is hype anyway.

I don't know, there's a lot of hype but theres also a solid game underneath that. Is it the second coming? Of course not, most Blizzard games are very iterative anyways, WoW at launch was barely the same game it is today. I expect Starcraft 2 will be no different as it evolves over time on the MP side of things. There is already a very solid SP campaign though I agree it's nothing unforgettable.

Are you people convinced yet that VGChartz makes their numbers up out of thin air? 1.8 million in one day minus Korea vs. 1.5 million in two days worldwide....hrmm....

Actually youre comparing day one with 48 hour sales so they were off by more like 800k units. To be fair, they did say "estimates". Anyways I think we've already settled that debate, some people use their numbers as a baseline, other people don't like their lack of transparency and life goes on.

gameplay is ultimately less important than re-enchanting the gaming public with antiquated game design.

It's not that I disagree with the validity of this statement, it's more that you phrase it and mean it in a derogatory way.

There is nothing wrong with tried and true gameplay. Dozens of RTS games have come and gone over the years, some trying to reinvent the wheel and often only succeeded in making an overly complicated unbalanced and thus un-fun game.

Others tried to strip things down to focus on controlling smaller unit formations, and while there was some interesting concepts there, it didn't result in that great of an overall experience.

Wrong, I have played it, the 14 days trial. And I have seen what this game offers and it isn’t much at all.

As I said, you guys have been taken in by the name of Blizzard, they were counting on the name of Starcraft to make sales, it wouldn’t have mattered if the game is good or not. You all still jumped without looking first.

I like Blizzard as a company and think they do make some of the best games around. But when it comes to SC2 this game is lacking. Yes it has some of the best CGI that can be found in a game, but CGI does not make a game. Content does, SC2 SP game is nice. But when it comes to the MP, that’s were I have issues with this game. Defenses, well they are lacking, they are more like paper silhouettes.

Might as well not even build them. Units, no formations at all. When you have a bunch of units selected it’s like a cluster fuck. A mass horde of shit piled together. Totally sucks. Blizzard took big steps backwards with this game they did not reinvent the game they left it as is. And I think it’s because they were afraid if they changed it to much you all would have had shit fits about it.

A new paint job, but the rust still remains.
