StarCraft II Overheating Bug

One of the listed StarCraft II Known Issues on the Battle.net Technical Support Forums is a bit of a doozy, as when rendering "screens that are light on detail" (such as menus), the game can cause hardware to heat up by refreshing the screen too frequently, which can put your system in jeopardy. The posting is from a couple of weeks ago, and the workaround they offer is clearly for the beta, but this known issue is also apparently still present in the shipping version of the RTS sequel, as a post on GameInformer.com describes the game's destruction of a graphics card and a laptop apparently thanks to this problem (thanks Ant via Digg). Here's the workaround for the beta, which will presumably work on the full game by using the proper directory:
Screens that are light on detail may make your system overheat if cooling is overall insufficient. This is because the game has nothing to do so it is primarily just working on drawing the screen very quickly. A temporary workaround is to go to your Documents\StarCraft II Beta\variables.txt file and add these lines:
frameratecapglue=30
frameratecap=60
You may replace these numbers if you want to.

And yes, VSync will solve it.

You sure about this? I know in the Champions Online case, VSync doesn't fix the problem... while the game outputs the frames synced, it's still processing as many as possible, and just dropping the rest, so the cards are still overtaxed.

I guess that's possible. That seems like a really weird way to do VSync, but I would imagine it's different per engine. I was just guessing, but it seemed logical VSync would fix it.

A far easier way to fix it would be Blizzard putting in the three lines of code it takes to do a frame limiter.

*shrug* Whatever.

I didn't see the bug myself, I just remember skimming through the forums exploding over it. There were plenty of bugs which I never actually experienced, guess none of them existed either, eh?

This should only affect systems with CRAPPY COOLING. Come on, if your system can't survive running at 100% for a bit, then YOU ARE DOING SOMETHING WRONG.

EVERY computer system should be able to handle 100% load. Otherwise you could have something as "minor" as those stupid malformed flash ads that suck up 100% of CPU screw your computer up.

(note that this is DIFFERANT than the nvidia fan driver bugs where the fan was set to a low speed regardless of temperature and some of the graphics cards burned up).

Sure every computer can and should be able to handle 100% load for a while, but from the sound of this a user could have it running at 100% load for as long as it takes his card to melt. He could go afk and get a sandwich while his GPU is redlining.

Actually, this sounds like exactly the same problem they had with one of the WoW expansions (Wrath, I think -- not sure). Pretty sloppy they let it happen again...

What do you get to do with a guest pass?
Single player?
Multiplayer?
Look at pretty pictures?

Everything. 7 hours in game. You can even download it straight from blizzard battle.net website. Think of it like an mmo.

One of my personal gripes, not so much a bug as a poor design function...why can't I pause a single player game and chat with people messaging me? I have to let the gameplay tick away while I'm responding to someone.

QFT.

This coupled with the inability to make it appear that I am offline while playing the single player game makes for a singularly frustrating experience.

I am not interested in always being available to the people on my friends list, Blizzard. I realize I can set myself to unavailable or whatnot, but this is a poor substitute as it does not deter some.

I am just upset that i can't tweet out of the game. Maybe automatic tweets when i achieve a milestone would be cool. You know, real content people care about.

F10 = Menu = Game paused.

Yes, I know...but you can't chat while in the menu screen, you cant even access the Friends List as it's on the game UI.

only in the quality of the low-res/in-game rendered cut-scenes.

Which cut scenes are low res that are rendered ingame. Most of what I've seen is incredibly well detailed unless you set your preferences lower. On a high end pc those scenes always look fantastic...no?

I have scene a pre-rendered scene that looked like ass, 5th mission or so, right before that lava world mission, was a shot of the ship in space that was an actual video clip and I swear that was in 320x200 or some BS. Not sure how that slipped in there.

There are some strange bugs to be sure, some that really shouldn't have made it to release.

This is one of them. Another is voice chat not working for anyone...how does that get through QA?

F10 = Menu = Game paused.

Granted, I could see a viable idea of having the game auto pause if you open a battle.net message window or something. Thatd be a nice feature.

I was wondering why this was the only game my gtx275's fan was blasting at high speeds for. Ill have to try the new settings and see if the fan stops now. Whats worse, is the fan would blaze not in missions, but in the sp campaign on the ship only. Cantina, armory, so on.

I was a bit confused by that as well. In missions with everything turned up to their highest my fans were normal, yet on the ship they went bonkers.

Edit: Err WASNT crazy.

Good to know I was crazy.. at least on that topic lol. Some may just think im crazy in general.

Wait a second, the post refers to the beta client, so is this for anyone using the beta client or everyone?

This bug is for everyone. The directory instrutions are correct except replace "Starcraft II Beta" with "Starcraft II".

Personally I enabled Vsync and I ran GPU-Z while playing the game. The temp went up a couple of degrees but nothing too bad. I am running a quad core 2.8 with 6G ram and 9800 GTX video card.

The crazy thing is that the other day I was on the Champions Online forum and people were mentioning the game destroying their card for the same reason. I was like WTF, I've never heard of that... now SC2 is doing it too.
