Half-Life 2: Episode Three Hints?

GamingBolt notes some activity on the Steam Users' Forums highlighting what's a discovery said to be found in the Alien Swarm SDK that is being taken as a clue that Half-Life 2: Episode Three is actually in development, or at least is still being planned. The post links an image showing an object purportedly from the SDK called "info_node_hint" with several Ep3 references. Feel free to sprinkle this with salt, though Valve has made a recent habit of letting announcement hints slip in odd ways. Thanks Ant via Digg.

I'm wondering why the prevalent attitude by people who ironically like to bitch about people bitching is that you have no authority to criticize a developer unless you are one yourself. That is certainly the dumbest thing I've heard all day.

When a developer declares that the sequel to one of the best games of all time will be a three part experience, and then after almost 6 years we still don't even know if there will be a third installment to finally complete it or a new game altogether, I have an incredibly hard time understanding how someone can be lambasted for being less than overjoyed at the situation.

I love Valve, but c'mon - that's just crazy.

Thank you, Prez. I may need to print your post out and hang it on the wall.

Say the portal team was 5 people, they go with Valve, have a problem or whatnot and 3 leave, leaving two behind to work with what, Valves 12-20 people?

That's tiny.
Okay, I'm going to have to stop you right there because you're pulling numbers out of your ass. It only takes a quick trip to the Valve website to see that they have over 100 people working for them. Stop trolling every Valve topic and go and do something with your life.

Shouldn't we be playing Half Life 4 by now?
Wouldn't that be Half Life Forever?

I was hoping EP3 would have been released on time, then they would do a few games/episodes in the Half-Life world like Blue Shift and Opposing Force with HL2. It would have been fun to play a group of resistance fighting to get out of City 17 before it blows up or other events that took place between HL2 and EP1 or EP2. You could briefly run into Gordon, Barney and Alyx along the way.

" this really doesn't seem to indicate they're leaving game development behind in favor of distribution. "

Absolutely it does. When someone makes something great, they get on the gravey train. Valve does not have a huge dev team to develop random games that strike gold. They are still considered a small dev house. Many of the people that get absorbed then leave are small. Say the portal team was 5 people, they go with Valve, have a problem or whatnot and 3 leave, leaving two behind to work with what, Valves 12-20 people?

That's tiny.

So in the future I bet Valve does give people the tools to make games for them directly or indirectly an Valve steals their ideas and runs off with a new IP as stated in the agreement if you use their tools.

Sneaky, backstabbing, but oh well, thats the way it is these days.

Highly doubtful. For one, I seriously doubt Valve is doing another episode at this point; if they're taking this much time, I'm expecting Half-Life 3 instead. Secondly, "Ep3" doesn't necessarily make reference to Half-Life; much more likely that's completely unrelated.

Yes there is a lot of bitching, but honestly can you really blame ppl for bitching.

Valve opened themselves up to this when they decided to go the episodic content route.

Episodic content in most peoples minds mean timely and consistant content. Like comic books or television shows.

Valve indicated they could do this but we all no how that actually turned out

Furthermore we were expecting 4 to 6 hours of content in a timely manner and its been more than 3 years. Even worse its been 3 years of mostly silence from Valve.

So people should bitch

and honestly Valve should not take the bitching as necessarily a bad thing.

That Bitching shows how much most of us care about this IP

I personally still think Half Life 1 was the greatest game of all time.

Regardless of whether you are on the bitching side or not. When valve announces the release date for HL2 EPS 3, hopefully before the year 2020, I know myself and most ppl on this thread will break out there credit card and give that number to STEAM.

Damned if you release a sequel for a game immediately after the original was released while ignoring promised extra content and a back catalog of other sequels.

And damned if you don't release an episodic game in an episodic fashion implemented with the purpose of releasing games faster.

Go ahead and open your own dev house... then we'll talk. It's gets so annoying hearing you kids whine about a profession you know nothing about.

Valve works on EP3 for a few years, instead of rushing it out, they get slammed for being like 3D Realms.

Damned if you do, damned if you don't.

Yes... People are upset about both of those things.

Let's keep in mind also that competition on the PC for quality titles like the Half Life franchise has been rather moderate/low for some time now. They can pretty much release the game with some serious delays and still top all sales without worrying about any competing titles or lost interest by the fans.
