Raven Would "Love" a Singularity Sequel

The Singularity interview on Gamasutra talks with Raven's creative director Dan Vondrak about Singularity, their recently released first-person shooter. He discusses the challenges and opportunities presented by launching a new intellectual property, and describes their eagerness to continue this as an established IP: "We would love that here at Raven," says Vondrak. "To get a sequel, and see ultimately where it goes, because with the sales numbers, we'll see if that's a viable option from a business standpoint. But we would absolutely love it. There were so many ideas left out on the table because we wanted to make sure we polished the ones we had."

Damn you Raven, stop making generic-ass futuristic/space marines and give us another Heretic or Hexen. Or at least a new IP in the same vein. Jumping on the Me-Too-Bandwagon will only get you so far.

Been playing this myself and I have to say I am enjoying it. The time based powers are pretty neat and the combat is fun. There is absolutely no question that it borrows MANY elements from other games, most notably Bioshock and Half Life. I don't consider that necessarily a bad thing, however, especially if the game is fun.

On the other hand, I am enjoying Alpha Protocol and most people are shitting all over that too, so maybe its just me. *shrug*

I'd imagine that a sequel is unlikely, given that the lack of hype coupled with the economy at the time of release practically guarantees that this game will under-perform.

And I'd love to buy the game but the stupid cunts decided not to put in on Steam here on the UK. No sale.

How unfortunate. They use the Unreal Engine 3 engine but they haven't released a dedicated server for the game.

That's an understatement. I'd go so far as to say they borrowed so much from Half Life and Bioshock that they should have called the game "Similarity".
what i find most ironic about this article is that raven even has a "creative director" since they've been making the same game over and over again since soldier of fortune.

it only took ten fucking years but i'm glad the internet finally caught on and took ravensoft's collective penis out of it's mouth.

Agreed. It's also one of the better time-travel plotlines in recent memory. Doesn't have anything on Legacy of Kain, but the way it subverts two or three literary devices common to the premise is great. Hell, it even uses recycled voice actors as a red herring.

I really enjoyed it, but then I enjoy most shooters other people call mediocre like Quake 4 and Wolfenstein... oh hey wait, those are Raven games too.

Anyway... good action, nice looking, I'm happy.

It's by no means terribly original

That's an understatement. I'd go so far as to say they borrowed so much from Half Life and Bioshock that they should have called the game "Similarity".

Very ham handed, and combined with laughable dialogue, I'm not very impressed. (And thanks for that subtitles option, Raven. It's fucking awesome when I can't understand what the voice actor with the cheap accent is saying.)

Having said that, I can't seem to stop playing it, either. It's like a really bad b-movie where you keep wondering if it can get any worse. (I'm betting it will.)

I would just like to say that as a long time fan of first person shooters, I actually had a pretty good time with this one.

It's by no means terribly original, but it's well-done and very polished across the board, and feels a lot more like a PC game than most comparable shooters have in years, including Raven's own Wolfenstein (which I disliked heavily for its stop-and-go level design and floaty controls). It may not truely measure up to the great shooters of yond, but it's as close to it as shooters have come in some time. I felt my time was well-spent on it.

They should have just focused on the time glove/effect and expanded upon it, as it cant be used thru out the game

Be nice to see the storyline picked up from the "good" ending. Talk about all your base are belong to us.

I have a sneaking suspicion this is going to go the way of Alpha Protocol, though, considering the dearth of exposure the game got beyond a few trailers and the viral marketing that got pulled because they changed the plot.
