BFG Tech to Close?

The PSU department at BFG Technologies has been let go, reports [H]ard-OCP in a follow-up to recent news that the company was ceasing the manufacture of graphics cards. They learn this by way of "sources inside BFG Tech," and take it as an indication that the company may not be long for this world, suggesting that if you have a BFG graphics card that you want to RMA under their lifetime guarantee, you do so quickly.

I guess you can stay in business only so long when your consumer base takes nine-volt batteries to your product to get a free upgrade.

Sometimes companies going under will hire a firm to do warranties instead of them. But with lifetime, I doubt any replacement warranty company is going to offer that.

Just under 2 years ago I RMA'ed 2 BF 8600OC's for a customer and my own personal MSI 8800 Ultra on the very same day. one 8600 had artifacting and the 2nd 8600 had very minor artifacts during 3D mark but since we where sending on back why not both, BFG saw it that way also, my own 8800ultra had major artifacts right from POST. The 8600's came back about 3 weeks before my ultra and BFG upgraded the 8600's to dual 9800GTX+'s. I fought with MSI to get the same card back (they wanted to send me a 8800 640mb), artifacts appeared again inside of a week, on the THIRD RMA to MSI they finally upgraded my 8800 Ultra to a GTX260 which I promptly sold and bought dual BFG GTX275's. This also being a registered MSI reseller and pulling every string I could, love their boards HATE their video cards.

Sad to see a good company like BFG go under.

Ive never had a BFG card, but I've always heard good things about their cards and their customer support. I can't speculate as to why they're going out of business, but I know when going out of business some companies hire consulting firms to handle that process. And the last thing on those consultant's minds is customer support. So that may explain the sudden drop (complete lack of) in customer support.

I still run a BFG Liquid Cooled 8800GTX.

I haven't had a need to upgrade since my monitor only does 1280x1024. I also have no desire to go to a widescreen monitor since it would be a pain in the ass to get a majority of my old games to work properly on one.

That said... I've been eyeballing the Liquid Cooled ATi 5870 LCS as an eventual replacement... but I'm in no rush. I may just wait for the next round of cards (Next gen HD 6870? / GTX 580?... not refreshes), or pick up the 5870 LCS dirt cheap by that point.

I was so happy when my Falcon came with a BFG 6800. I had heard good things about them. But it turned out there was a problem with lots of 6800's blacking out on some of the most GPU intensive games. Neither Falcon nor BFG could help, or really cared to. I later found out it was very widespread and probably would have cost too much to fix. (Years later they offered a short lived trade up on 6800's.) Anyway, people and companies go up and down.

I had to get the Illinois Attorney General involved when BFG wouldn't honor a rebate they offered. After double the time period they said it would take to get a refund, and multiple letters from me, they sent me a response saying that the rebate was only good for the liquid cooled versions of their cards.

I had purchased a liquid cooled version. The model number reflected that fact quite nicely with the 'H20' suffix.

After I wrote a letter to the IL Attorney General, including all of the submitted paperwork and copies of the correspondence.....all of a sudden BFG was very apologetic and issued my refund immediately.

Good riddance. They might once have been a good company. In the past couple of years they went way downhill.

Yeah I was told "we are no longer selling GPUs to the public" when I called support two weeks ago. Just mailed my GPU in to RMA today.

Awful, awful RMA. I sent in an email, never got a reply. Phoned in, had to wait on hold for 30 minutes. Got RMA setup. Uploaded proof of purchase to web server. Waited to receiver RMA instructions in mail... waited... waited. Called support, waited 30 minutes, told them to push my RMA through. She does so. I get an email saying "to continue your RMA, please submit proof of purchase..." Called support. Waited 30 minutes. Told her I already sent in proof of purchase a week prior. She finally pushes RMA all the way through, and in the mail it went.

Good thing I have all these wonderful PS3 games keeping me busy (even if I'm extremely disappointed with FFXIII).

I had to RMA a Thermaltake PSU about a month ago and that was a much better experience.

Last month, I sent BFG an email regarding their trade-up program. I own 3 BFG video cards and they never even bothered to get back to me, a day or two later then announced they were exiting the GPU market. How do they go from some of the worlds best tech support to no response at all.

It's a shame that a good company has to close while terrible companies just get bigger.
