APB Audio Ads

Massively has word that All Points Bulletin will feature audio advertisements over the game's VOIP channel, with an option of paying a premium to make them go away. They link to this forum post explaining how this works:
You will receive a short audio ad once every 3 hours. HOWEVER ads will only be heard when first entering a district.

So for example:

1) You start up the game and enter the social district.
2) You will hear a short audio ad.
3 You stay in social for 2 hours and then switch to an action district.
4) Upon entering the action district you will NOT hear an ad.
5) You play in the action district for 5 hours and do not hear any ads.
6) You exit the game.
7) You start up the game at a later time and enter a district.
8) You will hear a short audio ad.

Ad Fail

Edit: To clarify. Im just not a fan of ads in a game unless it makes sense. Like Gran Turismo having Pepsi decorated on the side lines. That makes sense. An obnoxious audio ad? Thats way worse. No thanks.

Wow. The only thing worse than visual ad's in games is audio ones.

Well if the poor gameplay feedback isn't enough to turn you off of this game, maybe the audio ads will.

Just wait for it, between level loading screen video ads coming next.

Someone on VE3D mentioned these are only VOIP ads. If you turn off VOIP (which everyone will), then you won't hear them...or something like that.

This would be a decent idea if the game wasn't paid subscription. Since we have to pay to play AND hearing ads, this game just got a lot worse.

Don't worry, they'll patch it so that the ad applies to everyone at all times (regardless if they're using VOIP or not). The logical thing for players to do would be to just use an external/third party VOIP service like vent, team speak, skype, etc...

If they're going to spend the time/money for a molesting ad system like this, you can bet they'll make sure they get their money's worth once they realize players have found a workaround.

Kind of disappointed, I was hoping we'd see some 1999-style strobing flash banners everywhere instead

What a terrible, terrible game.

The game is fun to play, and a 15 second audio ad once every 3 hours doesn't bother me. If it's that much of a problem, you can pretend your subscription is 10.99 instead of 9.99 and not hear any ads at all.

Yeah.

Paid subscription on top of retail price on top of it only being 100 players per instance... now ads too. Just seems like a rip-off.

The customization stuff is excellent and they should have tried to get their post-release cash from there through paid DLC, that would have been a lot more appealing and focused on the best part of the game. They could have even let people sell their own creations for real cash and RTW gets a percentage.

The game isn't great either though, no localized damage and hitting the same objective areas over and over again in just the free 5 hour trial made me never want to play it again, which sucks as the fundamental ideas are good.

If the adds were part of a free to play option then this would be acceptable. Otherwise forget it.

What do you mean or? Of course it's going to fail. Give it 3 months and the client with 10 or 20 bucks. Give it 6 months and the client will be free and the game will be F2P as well. There is just no way that game models this limited - and doing dumb things like in-game advertising - can or will be financially viable as a P2P model.

If these are not made specifically for the game, with a proper context, it will be SUPREMELY annoying.

I really didn't care for a the game but I thought the loading screen was cool. It had a very Aphex Twin feel to it.

The ads only appear during the loading screen and doesn't interrupt game play. I am surprised there isn't in game ads like billboards and radio ads. As long as the ads don't take away from the gaming experience I don't care. Not all companies are going to have the resources of Blizzard or Bioware.

ads, paid subscription and you have to purchase the game which will be useless a year from now when they fold? screw that. if it were a free model I wouldnt have a problem with the ads but what the hell is the cost of the box plus subscription for?

So, pay 50 bucks for the game, pay 15 bucks a month for MMO fees, AND hear irritating audio ads?

Nice.

APB will be the most spectacular MMO failure of all time.

Dudes should have just stuck to Crackdown, because Crackdown 2 is pretty shit too.

So instead of 1 great game we get 2 dog shit games and 200 people lose their jobs and die in the gutter.

Appropriate.
