Kane & Lynch 2 Dropping GFWL for Steamworks

A story on PC Gamer from last week has word that Kane & Lynch 2: Dog Days will be using Steamworks for copy protection and other functions, as Square Enix and IO Interactive are dropping the Games for Windows support used on its predecessor, Kane & Lynch: Dead Men. Saying the first Kane & Lynch "was nearly impossible to play online due to GFWL's crappiness," they asked IO Interactive's Kim Krogh if they would have similar problems with the sequel, and were told: "No, for that reason. We’re using Steamworks." Earlier this month Bethesda revealed they are using Steamworks on Fallout: New Vegas. Thanks Big Download.

You might want to post that in a thread about Fallout 3.

Or post on a different board!

I had zero problems with GFWL for Fallout 3, GTA4 and Batman because as soon as I saw that it was included with those titles I bought them for the PS3 instead.

GFWL - Or how to destroy mods in 0.01 seconds, and fail to properly implement load orders, so you don't end up with savegame corruption.

As someone else said, GFWL is a lot better from a DRM perspective. You can ignore the program and never have to activate, all you lose is achievements and online play. As someone who dislikes DRM and never plays multiplayer much, that makes GFWL better for me.

Steam is fine too, I don't really hate either one, but if you're going to make me launch another program with your game I prefer the invisible one that doesn't require online activation to install.

In Batman I had a time in a predator mission that got me on the leaderboard. But later I had a better time by three seconds that didn't get recorded because GFWL lost the internet connection during the run. I lost interest at that point. I still have the screenshot showing my leaderboard time and my better time for the level in the same shot.

GFWL is shit. I had to restart Arkham Asylum because my saved file was corrupted and backing up games is a real pain in the fucking ass. I hate it.

...which is why Bethesda is also ditching GFWL in favour of Steamworks for Fallout:New Vegas, hmm?

Steamworks is lot more stable than GFWL on PC, since it has been around for more years. Five or six years ago, the comments here were mostly from people whining about Steam and how it was terrible in every imaginable way. New infrastructure technologies take time to mature.

I am not a fan of GFWL, but I like playing games without strict DRM/activation even more. There are some GFWL games, where the DRM is more restrictive, but for games like Fallout3 there is practically no DRM, if you don't want to use GFWL.

With Steamworks you don't get any choice at all. The game is forever tied to your account.

That's something Bethesda would like. Also, more and more people seem to care about earning achievements, and once you start looking at these type of online features, Steamworks is *much* better.

Since, all I want is to play a single player game with minimal interaction with another application/server, Fallout3's GFWL policy is awesome since there isn't any interaction at all. Fallout: New Vegas' migration to Steam is a downgrade.

I guess you were not one of the many people that had huge issues with GFWL in Fallout 3 even if you were not connected. Not to mention you had to use GFWL to install the DLC of which *EVERY* DLC had serious issues specifically relating to GFWL.

Buy Fallout 3:GOTY or don't buy DLC for the base game.

Fact is, that the base game and the GOTY version can be played with no online/disc check and without logging on to GFWL servers even once.

Unless, you like to get Steam or GFWL achievements, Fallout3's version of copy protection is much better than that of a game requiring Steamworks

That sort of cut through the bullshit type of response should be rewarded

I agree. Gonna take a second look at this game.

Steamworks is a lot more restricted, since you always have to run Steam and the game is tied to your Steam account, meaning it can't be given or sold easily.

Nice try Microsoft......

Is that true? I bought a couple games from GFWL before but never DLCs. (it lets you pay with credit card instead of MS point when you buy full games)

Except I can buy the DLC in dollars instead of the bullshit MS points. This = #1 reason I still haven't tried any of the FO3 DLC.
