Why Didn't You Buy GSB?

"Why didn’t you buy Gratuitous Space Battles?" is the question posed by Positech's Cliff Harris on Cliffski’s Blog, attempting to open another dialogue with gamers similar to his query a couple of years ago about why games are pirated. Here's a bit: "I am NOT complaining. I am NOT moaning about sales. I am NOT unhappy with sales, I am not whining or anything like it. I just like making games that people enjoy, and I don’t know why the people who didn’t buy it, didn’t buy it. I’d like to know. The answers may well make it a better game for everyone, if I fix those reasons (if they make sense). It will make the game attractive to current fence-sitters, better for current owners, and more sales for me and my cats."

Let me preface this by saying I didn't buy the game yet, and I did not pirate the game; I am going to buy the game sometime in the future. I haven't pirated a game in over 8 years (The first Rainbow Six game).

With that said, I wish people would show more support to Indie developers by not pirating. If you don't want to fork over the money for it, don't download it. We all should support the PC platform more and take away the ammunition the console developers have against the PC market. I'm getting really sick of the console crowd labeling all PC gamers as pirates!

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I was under the impression that GSB basically didn't allow you to really control battles, right? You build the ships, form them into fleets, and then you just have to watch them duke it out without anything you can do about it?

That's been my main reason for not buying it (well, that and the fact that I have about 30 games I have yet to play.)

If a game is about battles, I want to be the one controlling those battles. Not the AI. It's always been my main aggravation with GalCiv2 as well.

Why? Because it does not interest me, right now?

No, really. It might be a nice game, but i am STUFFED with games i bought and want to play. There is no need for new games for months ahead. Perhaps even until the end of the year.

This one literally flew under my radar. I didn't realize about this game until, well, about now when I read this news entry. Have to try the demo.

First impression after just a few minutes of play is that the game just throws too much at you at once. The ship editor and all the modules/stats/etc are a little intimidating right off the bat.

I think if the game was presented in more of a gradual manner, it might attract more folks. That being said, though, it is interesting, and I plan to play it a bit more later.

I've heard good things about the game but didn't get around yet to trying it out or watching gameplay vids on youtube. Well, I did watch one gameplay vid... Seemed like a lot going on, which is fine. I like games that aren't overly dumbed down for the masses.

I can't answer - I did buy it! But I can tell you why I waited to buy it - in my opinion 23 bucks was too steep a price for what it seemed to offer. Would have been happier with it at 15, maybe 18 bucks max. I ended up getting it on a sale for the complete set.

I'm sure you have the same problem with the civilization as well, it's the genre.

Why doest that sentiment only apply to indie developers?

As for Cliffski...why don't you focus on making a game that you really want to play? If you try to appease the masses you'll only fail to appease any of them. If you're honest with yourself, as a gamer, and make something that you really enjoy...it'll do well.

And if it doesn't, at least you'll have a game you like to play.

Obviously because I didn't know it exist. Maybe I missed info on it being posted here, or it's just plain "bleh" marketing?

I lost interest the second I read the title of the game. Just as I'm not interested in a pair of pants named "Cheap Shit That Falls Apart"

I bought this game and I didnt like it at all, it was nothing like what I expected. I wish I had pirated it so at least I could have sen what this game was about. The game play is just to akward, not really fun at all. and its very repetative. Plus the lack of control really turned me off on this game. Its more like watching a scripted movie and to see who wins.

'Cuz they're generally perceived as being relatively innovative, more financially vulnerable and a bigger cut of the money goes to the devs rather than the publishers.

Not saying that's necessarily my view or that it's true, just that there is a reasonable rationale. It's a similar sentiment to the whole "buy local" thing, I suppose.

I am, and that game is GSB. I'm not asking people what genre of game to make, or what the style should be like, but more practical things. It's VERY hard as a solo developer, to know if you got the balance right, or the tutorial right, or whether the demo was the right length etc. That's the sort of thing I'm asking. Also, if I have a lot of people that thought the game was like X, but actually it's like Y, I need to be clearer when discussing the game the sort of game it is.
I've already got some good feedback from people on what puts them off the game that will help me improve it without changing anything about the game mechanics or the style.
