Steam Mac Data

A post to Steam News reflects on Mac stuff, and offers the first glimpse of Mac data from the Steam Hardware Survey. They say they will have full Mac details next month, and in the meantime offer these three bits of tid:

  • Roughly two thirds of all Steam Mac users are running on a laptop.
  • Portal (with the same code base across platforms) is one fifth as likely to crash on a Mac than on Windows.
  • And one week after launch, already more than eleven percent of all Steam purchases are for the Mac.

Most people do not know how to care for thier PCs. ie updates, knowing NOT to install crapware, and their hardware is not as high-end as apple hardware.

And that means $$$ for us!

Not sure on the "high-end" part (a $2000 Macbook really isn't much different hardware than a $1000-1200 Dell or HP laptop), but where the Mac really shines? Consistency in hardware. Pretty easy to ensure stability when you're coding for a very small subset of hardware. It's almost a console-like setup...

So users who have crappy hardware and do not know much have their systems crash a bit more often, haha. Well, DUH!

Yeah Steam for Mac is a bit buggy. I've had it launch Torchlight in demo mode a number of times for no reason, and once when my battery went to 0% and the computer forced hibernate, upon wake under power Steam wouldn't see that I quit Torchlight and didn't want to quit.
Nothing a "Force Quit" doesn't solve though...
Overall, a good experience.

Without hearing more detail, it sounds like they need to check out their cross-platform tools. Something's not right if one platform is crashing 5x more than another.

5x? Did you mean 20%?

Nope.

Mac's Steam is very new so it is bound to have problems compared to old Windows'. IIRC, Windows' Steam was buggy when it first came out! Remember?

Not to mention that there are 10x more PC users on wildly different hardware pretty much means more bug exposure.

I also don't see how mac version of portal can be more stable than the windows version thats been out for 3 years. A good number of people in several forums talking about the mac version I have been following are having some launch issues of some type.

Weird. I don't think Portal has EVER crashed on me, and I wouldn't go near a mac.

I'd like to see how crash rates break down amongst platforms, as the differing driver models between XP and Vista/7 would likely give completely different results...

Yeah huh? Golf clap.
