ArcaniA: Gothic 4 Interview

The ArcaniA: Gothic 4 interview on Hooked Gamers chats up DreamCatcher Interactive producer Kamaal Anwar about the next installment in the Gothic series of role-playing games. Topics include the 75 names the game carried prior to ArcaniA: Gothic 4, differing RPG tastes in Europe and North America, the switch in developers from Piranha Bytes to Spellbound, a now quite familiar promise that the new game will not ship with all the bugs of its predecessors, gameplay changes, and more.

"i guess we're just too fat and stupid! what an asshole."

What's a matter, truth hurt? Americans are fat and stupid.

I played Fallout 3 and all the DLC's without ANY issues in gameplay, not one single crash either. We are talking over a 100 hours! Game was great.

I am tempted to try Gothic 3 with all the community patches but something tells me the combat will still suck?

Risen 2 would be more up my alley! Obviously it wasn't PB that caused G3 to be such a shit fuck.

The work-around is teleporting to another indoor location and exiting there. But i too had that (and many many other) bugs in FO3 ;(

I ran into a bug in FO3 that wouldn't let me leave Rivet City without locking up my system. Seen this reported quite a bit by others as well. Haven't had the patience with it to try a workaround yet. Might come back to it if I run out of things to play. Still a decent game, and, like Oblivion, much better with mods. I would never get the console versions.

Risen got boring for me about halfway through or so. The combat was pretty repetitive and the story was getting progressively less interesting over time. If they do another one, I hope they do something to make the combat more varied and fun.

RISEN was great and very solid on release. Here's hoping they make RISEN 2 and that the Gothic4 team takes a page or two out of Piranha's playbooks.

I loved G3 more than Oblivion. And if you want to talk about a game with show-stopping bugs look no farther than FO3. To this day I haven't finished it due to the constant crashes to desktop. I plan on picking up FO3 GOTY for the PS3 since the PC version won't run on my current system for more than a few minutes. Of course if I build a new PC anytime soon I may be able to play it then...

i just finished gothic 4, except piranha bytes named it Risen. really enjoyed it, can't wait for risen 2.

i'd be surprised if it wasn't just their adapted design doc for gothic 4. it even takes place after "a dark wizard cast the gods out of the world", i thought it was pretty blatant.

i recall reading several years ago, like back when gothic 2 was coming out, that they had planned out 8 games in the series. and nothings going to stop them, it seems, not even a publisher claiming the rights to the name of their environment.

also, from the interview:
"North American gamers (and not specifically RPG gamers) would tend to look for the short term reward to spark engagement. European gamers are more methodical in how they appreciate a new experience."

i guess we're just too fat and stupid! what an asshole.

To be honest, none of the BG2 or FO2 quest bugs where bad enough to be gamebreaking

Actually, my FO2 NCR crash bug would have been game-breaking had I encountered it earlier. Luckily, it didn't happen until after I had finished the critical quests in the NCR. I didn't encounter most of the issues you did in Gothic 3. But then, that's the nature of many bugs. They aren't 100% consistent for every player.

Here are some examples of the huge numbers of bugs found in other RPGs:

http://www.killap.net/fallout2/patches/corrections.txt
http://readme.spellholdstudios.net/PSTFixpack_Readme.html
http://www.baldurdash.org/buglist.html
http://baldurdash.org/TESOblivion/UOPFixList.html

Gothic 3 was definitely a buggy game but not drastically moreso than most other RPGs.

It didnt. EVERYBODY involved knew, that the game was not only unfinished, but horribly broken by design. The game was shipped anyway, because the publisher ran out of money. Release, rake in money from the stupid and devout Gothic community or bust. A simple choice!

It's not that Gothic 3 had just some broken quests ... this game is still broken by design. The combat system sucks hard, the main story developement sucks and a dozen community patches cant fix all the basic design problems. And Gothic 3 got a horrid and terrible official addon, which was MORE buggy that the main program, which is quite remarkable on its own.

It's best to simply forget Gothic 3. There are enough only mediocre and very good RPGs to play, even more if you are into JRPGs, so why bother with this crap?

To be honest, none of the BG2 or FO2 quest bugs where bad enough to be gamebreaking But Gothic 3 had game breaking bugs (lets not forget it also had a COMPLETELY broken sound system when it shipped, with trees and basically everything producing looping buggy sounds of hell. How that slipped through Q&A i can not even fathom.

Heck, i've personally seen
- Enemies spawn in objects, walking through the ground (literally through it), attacking from *BENEATH* the ground, Spells hitting you through solid geometry, Arrows hitting Invisible Walls in mid-air, steps up/down sometimes teleporting you to different levels (like a physic bug that bumps you up or down a floor, totally fracking weird ,p) And i even managed to fall through the world geometry, 3 times. I have seen the omnious and game-breaking bug where you couldn't clear the town with that alcohol quest, because if you already had 1 bottle the quest wouldn't give you a 2nd one (which you needed to gain popularity)

You know, i can't even remember a game that was a buggy as Gothic 3, with the Exception of that Troika Vampires nightmare.

Never had any trouble with bugs in any of these games, at least nowhere near to the extent that I had in Gothic 3.

PST, FO1 & 2 and the BG games all had some broken quests. I remember a particularly awesome crash that occurred consistently in FO2 after I parked my car in the NCR, left and then tried to re-enter.

I don't think I've ever played an RPG that didn't have at least one broken quest. I think Gothic 3 just stands out in your mind because it's one of the more recent ones.

When in my second hour of gaming, one of a quest's main targets spawned IN A FUCKING MOUNTAIN, making the entire quest (and apparently the entire village) unsolvable, I was starting to gnash my teeth. When after six hours or so the King wasn't in his castle because the game spawned him at an altitude of 11 miles in the sky, that's when I'd had fucking enough.

Arcanum, Temple of Elemental Evil, Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines, etc. The Gothic games were nothing out of the ordinary.

Compared to three games that have been roundly crucified for their horrible bugginess? Yeah, Gothic 3 fit right in with those three.

At least the story in Risen was more interesting than in Gothic 3 Which isn't hard, given that Gothic 3 doesn't actually have a coherent story.

The biggest flaws with Gothic 3 weren't its bugs but rather a series of poor design choices: a shallow combat system that lets you win every fight by spamming one attack, an ill-conceived focus on scale rather than quality, resulting in a bunch of generic NPCs and towns, etc. In that regard, Arcania seems to making similar mistakes. Combat has been devolved further into pure button mashing and you can join every faction at the same time.

For all intents and purposes, Risen was Gothic 4. I just wish the storyline and characters were more interesting like in Gothic 1 and 2.

Only thing good about Gothic 3 was some of the music...

http://208.53.138.111/soundtracks/gothic3/jdcciisndw/myrtana-title-day-01.mp3

They put so much into the music and so little into virtually everything else in the game.

Don't forget other options such as "different," "new," or "more."

As I've stated before, after trudging through the terrible combat, bugs, and flawed mechanics that are Gothic 3, I hope anything and everything related to the creation of anything Gothic fails.
Give me a $50.00 refund and a han written apology note; only then will I reconsider.
Wondering why JC2 consideres itself too good for a $30 price tag,
