Bad Company 2 Onslaught Mode: PC in Doubt

The Battlefield Blog announces plans to add a co-op Onslaught gameplay mode to Battlefield: Bad Company 2, offering a trailer showing off the mode. The update only mentions this coming to the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, which has inspired numerous comments from perturbed PC players. The question of whether this is coming to the PC is addressed in this post by DICE Associate Producer Barrie "Bazajaytee" Tingle, who indicates that they may yet bring Onslaught to PCs, but they are struggling with how this would impact dedicated servers. Word is:
The question of "What about PC?" is coming up in the comments quite a lot already so this is what the situation is.

No, we haven't signed away rights to console on this. The problem we have on PC is that all our servers are dedicated with providers. Changing a server from Conquest 32 players to Onslaught 4 players cuts out 28 player slots from the total ammount available. This could have a dramatic affect on the PC online environment if enough servers changed to Onslaught.

We aren't ruling out Onslaught on PC but at this time we are researching how to bring it to PC without affecting players who don't have Onslaught or their own server to run it on.

Not releasing any dedicated server binaries to the public was an even bigger mistake. In light of that so was not putting any hosting functionality in the game at all. There are plenty of people who didn't buy BFBC2 because of that.

Since when did Battlefield players, especially on the PC want to fight against lame AI bots over other physical players?
Since BF1942 because it had single-player mode versus bots. Even BF2 had co-op versus AI bots mode officially added in a patch after the mod community made a co-op mod to enable co-op play on the single-player maps.

...why not JUST release the onslaught server files? Few would pirate the game just to play that. Even then it would almost act like a demo since it's just a fraction of the game.

'Cause that would just be way too easy, not to mention give us less to hate EA about. We simply can't have THAT!

It's definitely a different sort of game. But look at how Valve made a mint on the 4 player VS AI cooperative shooter idea. I guess some Battlefield players are so hardcore they would never consider playing a single player or cooperative game. But I think it could be fun if done well, as L4D was.

Also, why not JUST release the onslaught server files? Few would pirate the game just to play that. Even then it would almost act like a demo since it's just a fraction of the game.

Couldn't they do Onslaught as peer-to-peer? 4 people wouldn't be hard to manage.

A reasoned response. Besides why would anyone want to play with only 4 players on Bad Company 2's maps? They're ginormous!

Yes that is true that you don't run any graphics with dedicated servers, but 7 instances of onslaught will certainly require a lot more resources than 1 instance of a 28 player game.

no it doesnt take a lot more resource. just ask anyone who has rented a dedicated server how many different games they can host on one machine. you would be surprised.

Yeah, I also doubt that performance wise 7 instances of Onslaught = 1, 28 person server instance. Running the full engine x 7 would be a resource hog vs 1 regular server, IMO.

you dont run full engine on a dedicated server. heck i doubt if it even displays any graphics at all.

I don't really see myself playing 4 person coop against the Bad Company 2 AI. That's not really a fun way to play the Battlefield series. If I have 3 buddies, it's much more fun just to hop on Vent, squad up, and play a normal multiplayer match.
Agreed. That is how to play proper co-op in a BF game.

So anyone still believes DICE has our backs?

Ever since they didn't release Bad Co. on PC they haven't had our backs sadly. Obviously its gotten a bit better as they have released BC2 on PC, but it makes me sad to see BC2 have less features than BF games that were released 4 years ago.

I'm hoping BF3 is actually designed with PCs in mind, but given DICE's recent track record I'm not getting my hopes up very high. Give us a game with more complexity and some good old fashioned big-assed battles FFS!!!!!!!!!
