Age of Conan: Rise of the Godslayer Rises

The Rise of the Godslayer expansion is now live for Age of Conan, the barbaric MMORPG, announces Funcom. Word is: "'Rise of the Godslayer' is now available in retail as a combined package that includes the original game and the expansion, and is also available for purchase online for players upgrading from the original game. 'Rise of the Godslayer' not only introduces countless hours of new adventure through the addition of new lands and dungeons, it also adds all-new gameplay features such as the faction system." This page offers a list of new features in the expansion. "We are very excited about seeing ‘Age of Conan’ back on the shelves in retail as a renewed and revitalized experience comprised of both the original game and the expansion, exactly two years after the launch of the original game in May 2008," says Funcom CEO Trond Arne Aas. "We feel very confident about the level of quality offered in this expansion, and the initial reactions from press and players so far only serve to confirm our confidence in the game."

Early on the PvP servers were a mixed bag. I loved the one on one or even taking on two people trying to gank me. Even better was for them to find out I could kill them both and they would come back for revenge until I killing them repeatedly. Chasing them out of the zone.

Hunting some solo gankers was great fun... as long as their level wasn't too far out of league with yours. I even had a hit list of ass-hats who I hunted whenever possible. Well, until so many players hit the level cap and started grieving low level players at spawn areas (as somebody else pointed out earlier in this thread).

Without a doubt some of the best MMO combat to date. I want to try it again but I'll have to start a new character this time. I jumped in for a welcome back thing and could barely remember how to play the old characters.

I'm giving this another try. I was bitterly disappointed with at release with each new patch seemed to make things worse ... though I did always say that the game would be good after 6-12 months.

It's have enough time in the oven. Lets see what the chef has cooked up.

They're charging for this? LOL! I guess they want this game to fail at this point.

It does have PvE servers as well, where the PvP is confined to the Border Kingdoms and you're safe everywhere else.

The xpac test this weekend was, in my experience, a sad gank fest. I tried to struggle out from the constant attacks to see what had actually been added to the game, but wasn't able to. From literally the second I logged in I was forced to contend with roving gangs of gankers against whom a single player had no chance.

I uninstalled. I'm sure some people like that sort of grief based PvP. I'm just not one of them.

Ultimately, I decided I don't like that style of open PVP in a game with a traditional MMO grind.

It'll be longer than that. The EU update was pushed back a further 3hrs, and they've already announced that the EU servers will go up before the NA ones. It'll like be 10pm EST before they make it up.

I believe so. The initial experience as everyone has said is very nice for an MMO and it does smoothly transition you into a more common MMO style of questing. Its fun and all that.

To anyone else wondering, they extended the downtime another 4 hours due to issues that cropped up on the EU launch of the xpac.

The problem with this game for me was, though I enjoy open PVP. The fact there was no end game content breeded jackasses who would sit in the zones where you finally get to at level 20 and kill you ask you enter, over and over. Yeah, you could switch channels, but there was at least one in every channel being a douche. Made the game unplayable post 20 for me.

I don't play PvP, but I've heard that on the open PvP servers you pretty much have to join a guild before you leave Tortage, just for protection from other players. They've just added Shrines of Bori PvP content recently though, so half of the PvPers are farming Bori and the other half are bawing about it. You might be able to sneak a low level character in solo now without too much hassle.

Kind of related, there was a thread on penny arcade asking what the biggest disappointment in gaming was over the past decade, the thread was fascinating to me, everyone obviously has very different tastes, and this game was mentioned a lot despite that. It apparently rubbed a lot of people the wrong way.

I went back recently and played up to lvl 50-60, maybe 54 or 56? But the most annoying thing for me was how cool the combat system was against npc's but they could never seem to make it anything close to fun against other players.

This has turned into a quality MMO. The combat system is lots of fun, lore is great, graphics are amazing. Good stuff.

Is that because the expansion is released today?

Uhh yeah. The servers are down for like another 4-8 hours for the xpac. At 4am EST they went down for an estimated 12 hours.

Yea there is certainly a trail but it should be known at the 1-20 experience is fairly different from the rest of the game. All NPC's are voiced and the quests are more compact and you have a personal single-player story line that while continues after Tortage, only takes place at certain intervals.

After Tortage (the 1-20 zone) the game does become a more standard MMOG, and far less NPCs have voice acting (though more and more with each major patch). But even then it is a very fun game with unusual game mechanics, except the spell casting, which while still enjoyable is pretty standard MMOG style spell casting, at least until lvl 40 when you can use Spellweaving.

Anyway give it a try, you can get the game and expansion quite cheap right now and it is a very good MMOG and the expansion is very promising. I'm counting down the hours for the server to come back up so I can dive in!

The first 10 or was it 20 levels of the game are a pretty cool single player experience. After that it get's to be more of a typical generic MMO/RPG. However the graphics in this game are AMAZING to say the least.
