Heroes of Newerth Launches Wednesday

S2 Games announces this Wednesday will be the worldwide launch of Heroes of Newerth, offering a standalone game based on the Defense of the Ancients modification for Warcraft III. Over two million players have participated in the game's beta testing, and on the 12th it will be commercially released for Windows, Mac, and Linux. "It’s been an amazing three years so far," states Marc DeForest, CEO and Founder, S2 Games. "We’ve had such a good ride through the Beta period, now we’re looking forwards [sic] to getting the retail version out to as many people as possible. The team has put a lot into making this game the best multiplayer experience it can be, and we’re looking forwards [sic] to new and old fans alike playing and enjoying Heroes of Newerth."

If you're looking for a good DotA variant, seriously try League of Legends. It's actually a well made and BALANCED -VARIANT- instead of an outright clone like HoN is. LoL also has a much better community. There are ass hats in every game, but in LoL you'll have much less of them and sometimes you'll even find people who will be chatty and friendly, and might even stick around post-game and talk you up for 10 minutes or send a friend request and play with you in the next round.
And, as I've mentioned in a past post, the actual GAME is way better in LoL then it is for HoN. The mechanics under the hood for LoL blow HoN away... AND it's free. Ask some friends and see if any of them play LoL... then ask them to train you. Most of the time people would be happy to guide someone who's genuinely interested.

A post on Penny-Arcade, and subsequent video watching, has me totally stoked about this game that features DoTA/HoN/LoL like aspects: Monday Night Combat

Looks like they're going for TF2 style graphics and tone. Also reminds me of Global Agenda but without the MMO.

The DotA community really is one of the worst out there. Part of it is due to a weak player helping the enemy team, but another part of it is how it was grown out of the Battle.net custom game players.

I would hold out for Valve's foray into the DotA market.

I don't see why anyone would buy this when League of Legends is free and actually advanced the DOTA style gameplay instead of cloning it.

Than sums it up pretty well. Highest asshole ratio of any game out there. I quit once, but then went back. I'd play more if not for interruptions (as in, I can't have any while playing this game, which is rare). I loved the graphics and gameplay. I kinda wish they'd release an AI to play against (a real one). I ended up buying it just to support S2. I enjoy their games.

Thanks.

After playing Demigod and seeing how your dying hurts your team and helps your opponents, I understand how the game can be painful to play with a teammate that isn't as "elite" as the rest of the "good competition".

The problem is the resulting community, which is a shame.

Thanks for the honest opinions. As a casual player I'll skip this one.

The people online are at best belligerent and unwilling to offer help, and at worst truly unique jackasses. None of the community has any tolerance for new players.

That, sadly, was exactly my experience with the game. For two games, before I got fed up and moved on with my life.

a few of my friends say only good things about it

RTS is not my thing but I can see the appeal and it looks polished.

Is this clone going to be more of the same?

Having played the beta quite thoroughly, I can confirm your fears. I've never played a game with a higher asshole/player ratio. The people online are at best belligerent and unwilling to offer help, and at worst truly unique jackasses. None of the community has any tolerance for new players.

That said... playing that game has been the highlight of my gaming experience in the last year. If you are willing to pick up the game, and willing to be yelled at/dumped on constantly until you get decent at it, it really rewards with awesome gameplay.

The thing is, the game mechanics really punish new players. If you are dying repeatedly, and not using abilities when you should, it greatly helps the other team, and really injures your own. So, a large amount of frustration from your teammates is inevitable.

It's certainly not a game for the timid. If you are interested in trying it out, I recommend reading up a lot on the heroes and items before you play online, and just keep making a game called, "My first time" (Even your 50th game should be called this) just so people know what to expect when they play with you.

I've found that for RTSs there ends up being two worlds - one with casual RTS gamers, and one of hardcore RTS addicts. And in games like the DotA clones, that hardcore group makes it unpleasant to be in the casual group.

Is this clone going to be more of the same?
