New Steam Client Released

Steam News announces the new Steam client is out of beta, and now available. The accompanying update also says the promised Mac client is "coming soon." Here's word:
The 2010 Steam client is now live! The overhaul changes many things about how information is organized on Steam, and makes it easier to do the most important things on the platform, like play games with friends. We wrote up an overview of what's new, so definitely check that out so that you don't miss anything. As we've mentioned, the beta testing went well - participants suggested valuable changes and reported lots of bugs for us to squash.

We're very interested in your thoughts on the new client, so please stop by the forums to tell us what you think.

P.S. This is the first post in the official Steam Blog. It's hard for us to believe we've never had a blog until now. Anyway, watch this space for thoughts from Steam central. Coming soon: Mac!

It's not bad.... not great either as I personally disagree with some of the UI 'tweaks' but at the end of the day it does put info thats needed in more easily accessible places so i guess it's a step forward..

List Mode with small icons is like UI perfection, I'm quite happy with it.

As long as Offline mode keeps working for me, I'll take it.

Been using this since the beta. I like it for the most part. At the very least, its at least a lot more visually pleasing to the eye then the last UI heh. And also if you guys scope the forums you will see people have been working on skins for this since the beta as well, so you might find some other UI styles you like. Mostly different fonts and sizes and colors, and at times even locations of items. My only complaint is the catagories dont work in grid view. They did for a while but they removed it for some reason.

I dislike that it makes me take more clicks to do many common tasks.

The small/quick view of games I switched constantly back and forth from now takes 2 clicks since its in a view menu, instead of 1 click on a button.

They removed buttons on the bottom so now its 2 clicks to get to servers/settings/support etc instead of 1.

They removed the general news headlines entirely from front page (and no, the subset at bottom isn't the general news headlines). That was the thing I always checked first even before sales. Now that takes 2 clicks to get headlines, instead of 0 clicks by seeing it on default front page.

Oh and whats up with that new steam friends msg sound effect? It sounds like the soundcard went into a broken loop. Its like someone is bored and pushing a windows ding button over and over again because they are bored.
What was wrong with the old sound? It wasn't great but it didn't sound like crap like this one does.

Basically: valve redesigned UI, and held to a certain vision of it to the exclusion of all other concerns and comments, and didn't bother to listen to much of the beta comments, and didn't seem to bother to hire UI effieciency experts (come on you bragged you had 20 million steam accounts and you spent a bunch of millions on L4D ads, but no money to hire a couple consultants?), and didn't seem to bother to check logs of what common tasks people do and how to improve the efficieny of them, and in fact didn't even bother to see the general tech trend towards more quick buttons and instead moved towards the past instead of future in UI and moved tasks from buttons into menus instead.

A very common failing thats ever increasing in valve games, the underlying games are great, its the UI that doesn't get much attention from valve. If they'd just stand out of the way and let me play I'd be happy. Instead they insist on putting more and more hurdles into the way when I want to play.

Do what now? Opening your games list is one click - "Library." Am I missing something?

Don't mistake things YOU use often for things PEOPLE use often. B/c they are not the same. I'm guessing Valve did quite a bit of analyzing traffic and this is what they've come up with based on usage patterns. Reorganizing things to be more efficient for the majority will most likely make some things less efficient for some minorities.

I said "quick". The small compact quick game list you could get to in 1 click from steam from that little dock type button. Shrinking the games list to something small that I don't mind sitting on my desktop on one side while doing other stuff, intead of the giant bloated thing it normally is. Now you have to click VIEW then QUICK. Two clicks, not 1.

This is something that from now on everyone concerned about resource usage from steam now needs to do with the new UI. Because in quick view, steam takes almost no CPU and only about 15 megs. In normal view steam takes anywhere from 70-150 megs and depending on CPU can take significant cycles. In fact, cycling from quick back to normal "resets" steam usage memory usage back to 70ish if its been climbing (memory leak?) to 150+ megs.

Are you seriously telling me that "people" didn't use Servers/settings/support/quick game list from the buttons at top & bottom?? I have a hard time believing that. EVEN if that was the case, why should they remove all the functionality and not even leave it as an optional setting for the minority to use (if you are correct which I doubt) ?

I don't think they analyzed usage at all. They just had an idea they were in love with to the exclusiion of all else (like I said in my previous post). Heck they didn't even ADD the option for a quick game list until tons of people begged for it on forums while in beta (more evidence they didn't do any analysis on it)

BTW, if anyone prefers the old style game large game list:
1) click library
2) click list button on upper right (if it isn't already picked)
3) Click plus button on upper right and click icons.
4) click status word in bar above game list to sort to installed status.

Fortunately valve remembered to program the new steam UI to retain preferences for library, unlike other windows like the news window where it resets selections to default every steam start.

Yeah ok..

How about some FASTER servers, Valve?! Spend some of those millions you are making. Getting capped bandwidth 400kb-800kb is pathetic. You know damn well you are capping the bandwidth.

I remember when Steam used to be fast for downloads. It's bad enough you are charging people the same price as retail for new games. Give people faster servers or they will leave you in droves.

Even if not faster servers, how about enough reserve capacity to handle launch week? They've had tons of big games released on steam (valve games and non valve games), and it seems like EVERY SINGLE ONE, when its released, it slows to a crawl or is stuck on paused download, or whatever.
Its not like they don't have data on how much bandwidth a launch requires.

Just purchased Metro 33 on Steam. $49.99
I have 15mb internet speed. No problems with my rig or connection. It's been over and hour and it's still downloading. I'm at 50%.

I COULD have drove to the store and bought a shiny new copy with a nice crisp manual, stopped at BK, stopped at the smoke shop for some cigs, got home, ate, installed the game, and be playing by now.

STEAM is a f^@king joke in terms of speed. Surely a resolution is on the horizon for it's million+ userbase?

*note
junk food and smokes not recommended. finding a new download service is.

Same here, Steam maxes out my 25MB connection most always unless it's like a new big release during prime time. Probably varies on location.
