Grand Theft Auto IV Patch

Though it's not on the Grand Theft Auto IV Title Update Page, a new version 1.0.6.0 patch for the Games for Windows edition of Grand Theft Auto IV is now available to accompany today's release of Grand Theft Auto: Episodes From Liberty City. The patch is available from ActionTrip, AtomicGamer, FileFront, and WorthPlaying. Also, Steam now has an automatic update for the Steam-powered version of the open-world action game. Among other things, after applying the patch, the Rockstar Games Social Club application is no longer required to launch the game. The patch notes follow.

  • Rockstar Games Social Club
    • Remove Rockstar Games Social Club application
    • Separate RGSC application no longer required to launch game
    • Social Club login now occurs during the launch process
  • Shadows
    • A new, less memory-intensive, and better-looking scalable shadow solution has been implemented
    • Enhanced Night Shadows added with user-selectable level of detail (replaces Shadow Density)
  • Performance
    • Rendering optimizations have been made to improve performance, particularly when enabling shadows
    • User-configurable graphics settings have been added for shadow control
    • Improved memory management
  • Multiplayer
    • Enhanced security to isolate users from cheaters and hackers
  • Episodic Content
    • Provide in-game support to purchase "The Lost and Damned" and "The Ballad of Gay Tony" (Not available in Russian/Japanese Versions)

    • Fix floating street textures
    • Pedestrians in vehicles appear further out from the player to allow for long range sniping
    • The Moon has been implemented with simulated lunar phases

If only they would make an installer that will allow me to install on more than just Windows XP SP3.

Got the game 1½ years ago .. it's been collecting dust ever since, because it won't install.

You'll need to drop back to something before 196.21, which what I originally tried. I updated mine, and (obviously) have the same issue.

Same here, but it seems to be a somewhat rare conflict... gonna try going back a few drivers tomorrow, see if that helps.

I'm on a GTX 275 with a Q9550, latest drivers.

It's like playing the console version now, even with the view distance maxed. Really annoying.

It looks the same to me.

Too bad you couldn't just choose the things you wanted to be fixed with the patch...Thank god that RSC app is gone. I could never figure out exactly what they wanted us to do with it? It was just a pain in the ass. I remember telling my cousin, who was having problems getting it running on his system right after launch (like everyone else, me included - I couldn't get it running until the 2nd patch!), all the things he needed to do before he got it started up. I felt like tech support:

'Did ya start Rockstar Social Club?' - 'What the hell is that?!?'
'Did you register and start then update Games for Windows?' - 'Err...'
'Did you install the patches?' - 'I didn't know there were any'

Ugh...I hope not to have to go thru that ever again. We never did get it running. I think he uninstalled it and shelved it cause he hasn't talked about it since. I've played it since the 2nd patch but when I built my new system, I got a huge stuttering problem when playing that made it unplayable. I finally found the fix, which was an argument on the commandline in the games shortcut. Something to do with the memory management. It was a strange stutter 'cause it would be smooth as glass in between the stutters, so I couldn't believe it was my system components or heat that was causing it... *shrugs*

Thanks D4rkKnight.. So true.

Well I installed the patch successfully and played a while in MP. Performance seems improved most of the time but not all. Shadows are vastly improved. I think someone spawned a helicopter near me, as a type of friendly hack.

Warning to people about multiplayer: cheating to make your guns fire rockets instead of bullets is as simple as editing a text file last I played. Godmode and other cheats were rampant as well. I haven't touched the game in awhile because that ruined the multiplayer, but the way the game was handled I doubt this will stop the cheating.

Based on the first game, the will support it for a month or two then ignore any PC issues. Don't expect the multiplayer to last longterm.

Multiplayer? Wonder if it's any fun in MP... I might get it if the performance has indeed been vastly improved and the MP is fun.

It's ok, but unfortunately it uses p2p (no dedicated servers). I found the team DM fun for a few hours then it got repetitive partly because the weapons are not very fun. The good news is that the open-world sanbox mode (forget what it is called) is fun and you can turn off friendly-fire if you want. MP was fun, but the performance was bad enough that I couldn't take the stuttery gameplay. Starting your own game session and having people randomly join works well. It's a console game through and through. Don't pay more than $20 for the MP. It's sort of like Crysis where the game has lots of promise for MP but the engine is designed for single player and so performance in MP suffers.

If I could get the patch to install I'd post a report on it.

The last patch already improved performance a great deal, so this should be icing on the cake. I started the Episodes disc today and it does seem to run rather well so far, very smooth performance with shadows on high (not very high).

About damn time they removed the necessity of running the useless Social Club. At least that may speed up the game starting.

I don't see any mention of it in the list of fixes, but have they fixed the right mouse button binding problem? Originally it was broken that you couldn't bind it to anything under foot controls, then they claimed to fix it in one of the patches, but didn't. Finally the last patch fixed it, but even after you re-bind it to another function, it still hangs up the damn phone.

I thought the Moon was always there before. I don't have it installed right now so I can't check.
