DICE: Free Maps "Crucial"

Computer and Video Games has word from DICE senior producer Patrick Bach that DICE had "generous" amounts of DLC planned for Battlefield: Bad Company 2, saying: "we don't ever want to charge for our maps." He says they "insisted to EA that this attitude was crucial when it came to keeping our community happy and playing together," adding, "We're owned by EA but we're still very much DICE." A free VIP map pack for Bad Company 2 was released yesterday, as sales got underway for the Xbox 360 edition of the Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 stimulus package, which was $15.00 USD.

As for the maps having nothing - the rush mode for Laguna Presa is GIGANTIC. 3x the size of the conquest map.

I noticed that as well...I wish they would do diff versions of the Conquest stuff - or maybe that is coming. Some of the maps are HUGE and some are just meh.

Can you imagine that map fully open and with helos and vehicles for Conquest? That would be nice.

/second though: This explains the original layouts that came out, and I noticed that the picture for the whole space was HUGE and the play area outlined was very small.....it is now obvious that all of the maps that we have are HUGE and have WAY MORE playable area than they let you use. I like.

Where they ARE going to get you is with the DLC weapon packs. Kinda like how you NEEDED northern strike to get the 4th rocket, extra ammo for assault, and radar puck to keep up with everyone else that suddenly had better guns and items... You'll do the same when the M240 comes out and is better than the M60, and the SCAR-H assault rifle PWNS the Akaban.

As for the maps having nothing - the rush mode for Laguna Presa is GIGANTIC. 3x the size of the conquest map.

And I think after a certain period of time, they realized they fractioned the player base with the map packs for BF2, and made them all free, or included with a patch, no?

I think the expansion pack for Bad Company 2 is called Medal of Honor, but don't quote me on that.

I remember videos for BF2 right before it came out and they showed content that wasn't there (grappling hooks and certain nighttime maps, etc) - a short time later they announced a booster pack at 30.00 a pop and it had this content that was mysteriously supposed to be in the original game....

This is the same thing. They will add in stuff for us to buy, but the problem will become the servers and the people that play - how do you do a rotation? Will people just be kicked when you go to the new maps and they don't have them?

oh well.

Everything at this point is mute considering the problems that are in the game that I am now considering play stoppers. I love the game to death, but my attention is now elsewhere until they unfu*k some of the problems.

Heavy Rain, Just Cause 1 and 2, God of War 3, Metro 2033, Bioshock 1 and 2, and the GTA4 addons shuold give them enough time....hopefully.

70 hours for a 40.00 game. Not bad. Just hope I can double that playtime after they fix it.

I am impressed with the amount of fan service DICE is giving PC gamers with BFBC2. Kudos to them, I say.

Free Maps? I logged in today expecting to have to download something but it was in there all ready to go. These maps were in the game prior to now this just unlocked them. Would be as if MW2 kept some maps unplayable in certain game modes then one day turned them on in that game mode and called them "free maps". And they aren't free to people who buy used so those guys don't get to play together with other for "free".

This is a clever way to operate however. But calling this free content and comparing it to something that is DLC everyone pays for is misleading to say the least.

"We don't ever want to charge for our maps"

The way they didn't charge for all the maps in the Battlefield 2 expansion pack? Or the three DLC booster packs for Battlefield 2 and Battlefield 2142?

Personally I thought those booster packs were a great deal at $10 and did a lot to extend the life of the games. But it's completely disingenuous for him to say categorically they don't want to charge for maps.

It is cool that they're releasing some free ones to the community. But of course selling them individually was never an option. Very few server admins would add a single map to the rotation that 80% of their players don't have, and can't download without buying.

Bundling them all into a major expansion or booster pack is the only way to get enough servers on board.

Still quite a few maps to "unlock" in Bad Company 2, Valdez conquest mode for example.

I'm not really expecting anything in original or brand new content by the way of DLC map packs, even the mentioned soldier skin DLC is already in the game.

I miss those days. Don't forget mods. And remember when companies collected fan-made maps and mods to release as free packs?

I remember some Doom disk I bought had some outrageous number of maps on it, plus trials of every map editor, and thus began my amateur mapping. I'll have to see if I can find that.

Well if BF3 is PC exclusive like has been rumored then hopefully there is no excuse to not at least give us an SDK. Mods are partially are what kept me playing BF games instead of buying competitors products.

Imagine if the community could make their own maps, mods, and run public servers. Wouldn't that be amazing?

The number of dollar bills attached to your name can help extend that. Unlike Activision, EA isn't doing terribly well right now and Dice just brought them a hugely successful title on all three platforms.
