Free Game for Silent Hunter V Owners

Ubisoft is offering owners of Silent Hunter V a free copy of either Shaun White Snowboarding or Prince of Persia to compensate for server outages. Long-time reader Jim passes along the email he received, which offers the following explanation: "Following the recent temporary game server outages which may have caused disruption to some Silent Hunter 5 players on PC only, we would like to reward your patience if you have experienced any problems by offerring [sic] you a full downloadable game from the list provided below, completely free of charge."

So giving away games for free and still able to make a profit...it is almost like piracy.

Because both those games are EXACTLY what the Silent Hunter crowd is interested in. Rolleyes

It'd be even funnier if those games came with the same shitty DRM.

Ah, poor Ubi. You just don't get it.

Is it any surprise that this is already out on the pirate sites and working fine(well, as fine as a buggy piece of crap can) without an internet connection?

You're talking about the SKIDROW release? It is not working fine at all for anyone who has played it for more than an hour.

Actually, there is a profile trick that lets people play "total germany" and get beyond tutorial with SKIDROW. Problem is that its not reliable.

I'm surprised because the Ubisoft store for at least U.S. customers is rebranded Direct2Drive.

How about instead, provide romanian developer a free year to release patches for the game so that its not left in buggy state for modders to fix for years to come.

I'm into sims and given the paucity of them the last many years it's very difficult not to buy on impulse the odd one that does comes out (for me anyway).

Keep your games but FIX ALL OF THE BUGS IN SH5 and give us the gem we can see under the surface of all that bug doo.

About Bad Company 2 downtime:

It saddens me that some PC gamers have such short memories. This is EA/DICE the same EA/DICE that couldn't patch their way out of a web paper bag in Battlefield 2 and 2142. They are totally incompetent. It's like they have some competence when initially writing code, but then that competence disappears as soon as the game is released and they can no longer fix bugs and instead introduce new ones. Senior coders go on vacation, while the junior coders are left to try to fix code they don't understand.

For Assassin's Creed 2 we would like to compensate you for not being able to play the game due to server down time, by giving your more Assassin's Creed 2 which we would like to compensate for not being able to play the game due to server down time, by giving you more Assassin's Creed 2...

Infinite while loop. The attacks on Ubisoft servers will continue to demonstrate a point, and I think that this will only strengthen it. They are attempting to buy their way into the gamer's hearts. There is a better way to do that and everyone knows what that way is.

So is this method of compensating players with free games more cost effective/profitable than having a single player game not require internet access?
For sure it is, see quote from Sepharo:
Yeah there is tons overlap in SH5 fans and Shaun White/Prince of Persia fans.
With virtually zero overlap, you can probably count the lost sales on one hand and besides, both titles are well into the bargain bin $10-20 range by now anyway. This isn't really costing them anything.

Kotaku is reporting that AC2 players also got emails offering free games and the black edition DLC to affected players. I suppose this is in addition to the Uplay points they had given out earlier. Decent enough gesture from Ubisoft I suppose, especially for a few hours of downtime. Bad company 2 has a far worse track record at this point in time but I doubt they'll be doing anything to placate affected customers.
