EA on C&C4's "No" DRM

A post called C&C 4 Installation-Online Update on the Command & Conquer Forums by community manager APOC addresses questions about installing Command & Conquer 4: Tiberian Twilight, the recently released real-time strategy sequel. According to APOC, "Command & Conquer 4 has NO DRM. Zip, zero, zilch, none." He then goes on to explain that the game does require a serial key and an EA.com account to install, and while you can install the game on as many machines as you want and can play without the disk in the drive, you must be logged in to play, similar to the system Ubisoft recently implemented, though Ubisoft freely admits that this is DRM.

What's wrong with game prices exactly? I never understand this complaint. Unless you're some troll living in a basement who needs to play every single game on the market then I don't see how $50-60 is unreasonable. Game prices have fallen over the years, not risen.

Supply and demand I'm afraid. There are simply too many games on the market to pretend that everyone deserves a $60 price point. People can't play them all even if they wanted to so they need to pick and choose not only what they buy, but who they buy from. Competition is fierce for customers right now so consumers get to pick lower prices which drives the prices down.

I paid $59.99 for BFBC2, got a $20 gift card to use on games, and got it shipped overnight for release day delivery for FREE. That felt pretty nice. However you look at it the prices are being forced down by all the competition. I fucking love it.

Starting to become very obvious, right? As soon as he started linking to Steam's EULA, it became pretty clear.

It certainly points in that direction, I'll say that.

It's happened in the past to many Steam users (and permanently for some), and if it hasn't happened to you yet, it likely will given enough time.

Assley, is that you?

Fortunately, we now have a wonderful, WONDERFUL "ignore" function. Ahhhhhh....

Even a cdkey is a form of DRM. DRM doesn't just mean "software that fucks up your computer". It's a pretty encompassing term that represents many forms of protection for software and intellectual property. So yes, account structured authentication counts as well in my opinion.

Not so. Serials and CD keys do not prevent you from installing the application or game on multiple computers. As long as you have a serial or CD key, you can install it on pretty much any number of computers.

DRM is a generic term for access control technologies that can be used by hardware manufacturers, publishers, copyright holders and individuals to impose limitations on the usage of digital content and devices. The term is used to describe any technology that inhibits uses of digital content not desired or intended by the content provider. DRM wasn't even conceived until well after serials and CD keys were in use.

EDIT - I do agree that account structured authentication counts as DRM though, and EA is just trying to make it seem like there is no DRM so they can use that as a selling point. Shame on them!

Says a guy who uses Steam. Steam also does every one of these things, and yet you loved HL2 and Valve's other games which use Steam from your posts on this forum. What you really mean, hypocrite, is that you will only bend over and take it from Valve and not EA.

EA is just taking a page from Valve's playbook as most of its fanboys don't realize or admit that Steam uses DRM either.

Steam has an off-line mode genius.

Online DRM would be super nice and keep the PC alive IF..
#prices on games were sane.
#internet was recognized as the infrastructure it is.. in 10 years iv'e had problems with my connection atleast every week and most often every day and that's in several towns and with different isp's. Never had any problem with analog highways for boxes with wheels that run on oil made from decomposed dinosaurs tho.

CDKey/copy protection has been crackable for decade(s?) so that's just mindboggling to have.

The game itself is a real snoozer anyways, people aren't missing much. The beta was so boring that my friend and I uninstalled it within an hour so we could go back to Dawn of War II which isn't setting the bar very high

OMFG!!! Thar's DRM in my WoW, Eve, and even my Everquest!!! Get a clue people...

Ditto, C&C4 beta was boring. It's nothing like the previous C&C games (excluding RA3).

Having a valid key to play online to connect to master server is OK for me. It's not that annoying.
