Didn't know about the parking lot test. Now that's some funny shit! Funny and sad. "Screw it, we've got the government contract already. Why should we fix it?"
Huh? I'm sorry, I was thinking about cake.

Narf2029:
I know, I read a book on the allied torpedo issues during the war. It would be hilarious if it wasn't so sad. Even during the war there were political factions with vested interest in the companies involved that refused to accept there were any problems with the torpedos, even after demonstrating by dropping a torpedo in a parking lot straight down (and watching that it didn't go off) how the fuse had problems and would almost never detonate on a good perpendicular hit. There were many other problems along the way with the torpedos, but the broken fuses were one of the biggest.

skyguy are you gonna wager that sh5 will be pretty much fixed of bugs by 2012 or that the game will still be supported in 2012?

What an incredibly historically ignorant comment. Kriegsmarine <> Nazi - that would be like saying the US Marines were Democrats.

The Kriegsmarine, and especially the U-boats, had the fewest Nazis of any branch of service. I think the average was less than one per boat. Their command structure no doubt had more, but the average sailor did not approve of the party. It was undoubtedly very difficult to get sailors to believe in the Nazi propaganda while they were bored out of their minds in cramped and stinky boats for weeks at a time.

More on topic, I want SH5 badly but I'm not going to support this kind of DRM. I will buy SH5 the day the DRM is patched out, and not one day before. If SH5 is $20 or $10 by then, that's Ubisoft's loss.

edit: By the way, another little tidbit of history - Nazi Germany ordered the sinking of civilian cargo ships during wartime, and they are (more) vilified for that (since they did have plenty of other things to vilify them for). The United States did the same thing to the Japanese in the Pacific, and it's strategically sound and even heroic, if you knew it had happened at all. The biggest difference is that Allied shipping eventually did get organized and well protected, while Japan's shipping did not. That and American submarines were made like shit and it's a miracle our torpedoes even worked. When a teacher told you how extra-evil Nazi Germany was for targeting cargo ships, I bet they never mentioned a word about the United States doing it too.

Dev: it's not "how much money are you going to pay me." It is "how much of a wager are you willing to make."

I am willing to wager $1,000 that either a) SH5 auth servers will still be online on Feb 28, 2012 or b) an official patch has been released that removed the need for auth servers by Feb 28, 2012.

Interested in this bet? let me know.

Looks like this DRM cuts the game off after only a few seconds without internet.

skyguy: Ok I'll take you up on that garuntee. How much money are you going to pay me if they shut down the auth servers in 2 years from release for that game? EA often shuts down servers within 18 months or less for a number of games.

you can guarantee? you an official spokesman? sounds like it.

Only the ignorant takes on belief that UBI won't experience problems or that they intend to spend money on the servers supporting the authentication in perpetuity.

this DRM is stupid, and WILL have issues due to it's scheme.

No, I can guarantee you that they will not shut down authorization servers within 2 years for a game like this. People still buy SH3 for fucks sake! Anyway, all DRM was removed from Silent Hunter 4 in the latest patch, I expect to see the same with this game.

With all that said, I do intend to download a crack, just in case. I'm not a fan of the DRM scheme, but I'm a huge fan of Silent Hunter and cannot pass this up.

Oh and one more note -- savegames are stored both locally and on ubisoft's servers. From what I understand it is possible to disable the "cloud" functionality of the game.

skyguy:

Thats only half the problem. Don't forget you have to have 100% faith in ubisoft that they will have 100% uptime and never have thier servers attacked. If they ever do maintence on the servers they go down stopping everyone who owns the game from playing (ubisoft clearly spelled this out in the interview).
Considering the amount of users and bandwidth this is gonna take, its going to be ubisoft like launching a MMORPG infrastructure, only without any alpha/beta or stress testing. When was the last time you knew a company without any MMO experiance to do a smooth launch of an MMO? Plus, they are going to get tired quick of paying for those MMO like servers/bandwidth without an MMO like income. My guess is they will be like EA has often done and shut down the game servers within a year or 2.

Good luck!

I don't see the trailer reminding people you have to be online at all times during the game even when watching in game movies i bet.

I have this game pre-ordered on amazon and can't wait for it to arrive.

I'm just way to obsessed with the Silent Hunter series to pass this up. I can't even count how many hours I've sunk (haha) into SH3/SH4 over the years.

I'm buying it even though I don't have the most reliable DSL connection (my DSL modem occasionally loses its link). A recent preview of SH5 indicated that the net connection has to be down for several minutes in order to cause problems. Mine's never down for more than a minute, so at this point I'm not terribly worried about it.

If I were talking about some generic game of some generic genre like Assassins Creed 2, I wouldn't even think about buying it with such a restrictive DRM scheme. But there's never been a game quite like SH5 before (see the preview, a submarine simulation with RPG elements!), I'm going to love every minute of it.

I don't feel like paying for the privilege of having my gametime/savegames tied to Ubi server status. Will they shut down the servers in the future/when SH6 comes out ? Pay $60 to find out !
No thanks.

If I can't play a game when I have no internet connection available (using an alienware laptop and I usually play Silent Hunter when I am on my commute) then I simply am not buying it.

Way to treat your consumers like criminals UBI - how about you put a bracelet on my ankle too?
