A tweet by Battlefield Bad Company 2 lead designer David Goldfarb that's retweeted by the BFBC2 feed says that even if you stand on your head, they are not adding the ability to go prone in the military shooter sequel: "Fyi we will not add prone based on anything. You can stop asking now. :)"
Having played a lot of Battlefield, I tend to agree with Verno. It would turn into a sniping (bleep)-fest and you'd never have a prayer of finding the guy. BF is based on rushing and taking objectives. Sure, I supose they could limit the number of people playing any type of class, but then we'd all be calling it "America's Army 4." 
Besides, there is plenty of cover to hide behind. Snipers are already hard as hell to find as it is. If I want gritty realism, I'd throw all these games away anyway and go with the latest patch-up of ARMA 2.
