On Mafia II's Open World

IncGamers has a quote from an interview with 2K Games they will publish soon where they reflect on the open world being created for Mafia II, their upcoming criminal life sequel. They spoke with senior producer Denby Grace, who says to expect this to be the pinnacle of such games: "As well as the story, the level of detail and realization of the world really is an amazing technical achievement for the team here at 2K Czech," he tells them. "No other open world city comes close with the texture quality, attention to detail and destructibility of our environments."

Looks like something may finally come close to Outlaws, or even surpass it. The only downside is no PC - except a possible shitty port a year or so onward which is typical of Rockstar. THat sucks because RDR would be so much better served on the PC.

Amen. RDR is the only console game I actually care about. It's what GUN should have been. It's taken way too long for someone to make a good, open-world western and I hope RDR delivers (and gets a good PC port).

Looking forward to Mafia 2 and Red Dead Redemption (yes, I love open world/sandbox games).

Ditto. Loved Mafia, I hope they stay true to the original and don't veer too off course. And I just watched the new RDR trailer over at Rockstar and holy shit I'm stoked! GTA got nothing on Mafia's storyline. The original was epic with an epic conclusion. I can't wait to see if they can outdue that. Sure, graphically the original wasn't so much on par with I think it was Vice City maybe at the time, but storywise, it had nothing on it. Can't wait to try this one out. And yes, I never jumped on the GTA4 bandwagon so I don't give a f**k bout that game in regards to how it compares to sandbox games.

The PC version of SR2 is a far far far worse port than GTAIV.

Agree it's a horrible port but is much more fun and content rich. Maybe on my next PC upgrade I'll have enough power to run it well.

Lack of FSAA in GTA4 really ruined that game for me. That and it's iffy performance has caused me not to buy it. Here's hoping Mafia does PC games right.

SR2 kicks GTA4s ass in every possible way except the story/humor.. and its not that far off in that respect

havent played pc version - console version runs at 2x the fps of GTA4 tho... easily

GTA IV is hardly the benchmark for sandbox games. In terms of sandboxy features, it was sorely lacking compared to something like San Andreas or Saints Row 2.

Good to know, thanks.. Will check out Saints Row 2 :).

Be prepared for bad performance in the case of SR2. I didn't have any problems, but a lot of people did. But it feels a lot more like a sequel to San Andreas than GTA IV does. Over-the-top story, humorous/crude stuff (one of the minigames is driving around in a sewage truck literally spraying shit over everything.), and a lot more character & vehicle customization, and way more side-activities.

I wouldn't exactly call GTA IV a "benchmark", unless you want to call it a benchmark for how NOT to port something to the PC.

I don't think he was referring to the quality of porting to PC, but rather to the game itself. Huge sandbox city and storyline was done well. Yeah the PC version could have easily been the best but it wasn't ported well. We all know that it has a lot of issues.

For me though, the MP gameplay was rather shallow. Handful of weaons, poor weapon mechanics, etc.. It was good for MP, but not fantastic. No dedicated servers, no modding, poor performance, etc..

Are you being sarcastic?

I wouldn't exactly call GTA IV a "benchmark", unless you want to call it a benchmark for how NOT to port something to the PC.

Ultra long load times (even on the fastest of machines) and no FSAA support take a lot of points off what could have potentially been THE PC game to own.

GTA4 was alright, but even on the consoles it was a hog and rarely stayed at a constant 30fps

thats a huge problem for me, especially in an action game. the fluidity of motion is absolutely essential

so, if these guys also went with photorealism OVER performance... then i dont really care if its "the best" or whatever - it needs to be fluid FIRST and LAST

This sounds great. Mafia II, one of the console ports to PC for which I'm hopeful. GTA IV didn't ultimately satisfy that for me.

Pretty big talk, well see. I hope it's turns out to be true, though best textures would be nice AFTER they get the Story and Gameplay nailed, it only appeals to graphic whores. Graphic whore have already cost many great games to become only good games due to shitty ass bugs and poor gameplay designs.

I would be more eager to believe if they had truly been working on this game since the original Mafia but.... and if the original team had not be broken up.

After every desire there's another one ready to be liberated when the first one is sated.

Mass Effect 2 is one hell of a FANTASTIC game. Now I'm looking forward to Mafia 2!
Playing: Skyrim, World of Warcraft.
