Battlefield Bad Company 2 CTD Workaround

There's a Battlefield Bad Company 2 PC Beta forum on the Electronic Arts UK Website with feedback on the just-launched Battlefield Bad Company 2 Beta. The forums offer the chance to report bugs and find possible workarounds, and this sticky post addresses the tendency of the server browser to crash to the desktop: "We are aware of a number of crashes when people are using the server browser in game. Please help us pin point the issue by avoiding the use of the browser and instead using the PLAY NOW button. This will help us locate the cause as well as allow you into the beta servers without CTD." Thanks Joao.

Set your AF to 8. Huge improvement on framerate. It makes no sense why the game performs better with AF than without but it works.

Seems a little choppy an inconsistent to me..
I am putting my crosshairs over a guy, and firing.. and not getting any feedback that i'm hitting him, but he's lighting me up. Also, the crosshairs seems to jump too much for me..
Might take getting used to, but I can say that the "wow" factor of this game isn't there for me. I am not feeling that initial "i have to play" vibe after i log off.

Also, I cannot bind my mousewheel down to go crouch and stay crouch. It binds it crouch.. then i scroll down..i crouch, pop right back up. I dont like that... stay down damn you!

Ever hear of a day-0 patch? They can send build that patch for 3-1/2 weeks, test for 1, then make it public when the game goes live.

And I remember how Battlefield Vietnam shipped. Day 1 that was PAINFUL.

I had a blast last night. Played quite a bit. BC2 is great fun, even with its problems. I'm buying the game.

That is what gives them permission to keep doing this shit......
I am goign to cancel my pre-order and if they fix things, I will buy it.

There are plenty of other games to play - I don't want to give my money to these companies that think they can snowball us witih these issues and not address them. I don't see much changing in 2 weeks to gold pressing, and I don't see a zero day patch addressing my list of complaints....ohwell.

Hopefully BF3 will be closer to BF2, I don't understand why they just threw BF2 away and didn't address cheaters and the infamous tag bug....great game that would have lasted a LLOOOOOONG time with proper support.

Meh. Battlefield 3, please.

(Or better yet, a real R6 game, like back when they were a tactical shooter.)

I found a good and consistent workaround for the server list CTD. Use the 'servers' button in the bottom right. Click it, the login thing will pop up, login to your account, then your player. Then when the server list appears. You can use that, OR you can now actually click the server list from the top menu, as long as the 'servers' tab is open.

I had a blast last night. Played quite a bit. BC2 is great fun, even with its problems. I'm buying the game.

Regardless of how much they use the beta for testing, they literally have something less than 2 weeks to polish the game from this point for the retail copy. So that doesn't change my point.

One weird bug I experienced late last night after a bunch of clanmates forced me to try again (hehehhe) is that when I joined, everyone in my squad was unable to squat, sprint, or change weapons. This happened until all of us died and when we respawned it then dcecided to un-F*** itself....

Seriously? What bug is that called? The Doom bug? All we could do is walk forward or turn, and shoot primary weapon.

/edit: We have multiple threads now, and I don't recall where I read it - but holy shit I hope they open the maps up a bit - the current map is WAY TO SMALL with to much going on in a very small area....that may appeal to some - but it was a little ridiculous at times.....only 2 points of attack/defense with a full server, and the points are so close together....little much.

But I guess it will be cool when we have custom maps on our own dedica.....oh wait. Nevermind! ugh.

Any lazy-arsed way I can get a key at this late stage?

Fileplanet still has keys. Only for subscribers currently, but I'll bet if you keep an eye on it they'll go for non subscribers in a few days.

Mmm... Interesting to see they fked the game browser again. I remember the issues with BF2 and that... ohh wait they are still an issue.

Dice really needs to rip some of that stuff out and start from stratch. Even with the 1.5 patch BF2 still has the Coloured tag bug.

Sigh, guess I'll pass on this from the sounds of things. I'll still to BF2 and BF2142. Though the cheaters in BF2 are unbearable.

I played the PS3 demo... a lot; I hate to say it but it doesn't feel nearly as smooth or even look as good on pc, and I have everything maxed.

That said, it's a great game... at least on console. Most fun I've had since BF 2142 and 2142 won't run on my PC these days. It's sadly a sign of the times that I'm choosing to buy a FPS on my console rather than PC.

Sure, there is some load testing etc during the 'open beta', but if you think this is more of a beta then a demo then the marketing is working on you.

Grade A bullshit. Open betas are in fact used for testing, of course, and they are a very important part of the testing process. The purpose of an open beta is to load test, i.e. to see how the server and the client behaves under extreme conditions when thousands of players are hitting your servers (from the login servers to the lobby and actual game servers) all at once. Ideally you create conditions that are more extreme than anything that should ever happen during live operations of the game (although there is a definite difference between theory and practice in this regard -> see launch of WoW ). Then you work on the bugs -and there's some really quirky ones that pop up during load testing at times- and improve/optimize the network code and configs and all that crap.

Therefore: Open beta = testing all the way. Jerykk = clueless n00b (as always).

So really they are going to only have 2 weeks of testing and fixing before they have to have a gold retail copy ready. Thats not much time at all, especially given the EA Q&A where they probably have to take a week of multiplatform and multilanguage testing to make sure its an ok release candidate. Plus MS and Sony probably have to have thier stamp of approval.

Open betas (especially ones you can only play if you pre-order the game) are not used for actual testing. They are glorified demos. The vast majority of people who participate in open betas don't report any bugs. They just want to play the game for free before it is released. For actual testing, developers use internal and publisher QA.
