PC & Mac StarCraft II on One DVD

A post on the Battle.net Forums has word that the PC and Mac editions of StarCraft II will be on the same DVD when the real-time strategy sequel is released. Word from Blizzard Europe is: "Also the StarCraft II installation DVD will include both PC & Mac versions of the game. Further details on digital download possibilities will be released as we get closer to the ship date." Thanks Big Download.

I'm surprised nobody has asked yet: Will the PC and Mac versions from the same DVD be playable at the same time? For one thing, it would make LAN play a lot easier.
Uh, there won't be LAN support in SC2.

I doubt so, at least not 'legitly'. That said, they may include a spawn version as Blizzard has done in the past. Westwood is about the only group I know of that had 2 CDs that would work just fine for playing against one another on LAN, but only before EA gobbled them up.

Um, hasn't most of Blizzard's games come like that? Warcraft 3 and Diablo 2 CDs are Mac compatible.

A downloader for patches would be fine, but using the downloader to share the actual games to others is a bit annoying imo.

After being on previous connections here in Aust that method is cruel to the general user as some of our major isps count usage in both directions (yep, up and down).

Ontopic: I remember playing WC2 against my friend on his mac and me on my pc back in the day. At least blizz does support them, even though personally macs are not for me.

Blizzard likes to use their own downloader/torrent service for these kinds of things, so I imagine it would (atleast initially) only be available through boxed copies, or them.

I also doubt Steam would be viable since that adds a layer of crap to go through, additionally, just to play SC2. I don't really want to log in twice, or have to deal with up to TWO services being down, between me and my game.

At least their system works pretty well. Doesn't have any DRM, does it?

Aside from the "guest login" for single player, connection to Battle.net is required. So no, not really any different than Steam, which also allows you to play in "offline" mode.

You can find most of their games on their own store. Both formats are available there. But I don't recall them every releasing a disk that didn't have both formats on it either.

I wonder how the digital distribution system would work. Would I be able to buy this on Steam for example? Or will it be only Battle Net download? I don't mind either way as long as the offline mode is similar to Steam's.
I wonder this too. I would rather get it on steam for ease of use but I do have a Mac that can easily run games.

World of Warcraft is on D2D, so it's not completely out of the question.

My original starcraft disc did NOT include a mac version I'm 99% sure. The Starcraft battlechest version did.

Most of their services are account based so probably not. WoW had a memory scanning tool for detecting hacks/bots/etc called Warden however which I find a little intrusive, it's initial version scanned hard drive space as well as memory though I think they got called out on it and changed it later on.

I doubt we'll see it on Steam, Blizzard likes their own little battle.net system.

I don't recall any Blizz discs shipping w/o both formats together, but maybe I missed one...

Still good to know.
