Ships Ahoy - Mass Effect 2

As noted already, today is the North American launch day for Mass Effect 2, BioWare's sci-fi action/RPG sequel, and the digitally distributed editions on Direct2Drive and Steam have unlocked. Here's the official press release announcing the game's availability, which points to early reviews, saying the 97 rating on Metacritic for the Xbox 360 edition makes it the "second highest rated game for the platform of all time," and that the PC version has earned a 95 on Metacritic (actually 94 as of this moment). Here's the word on the game and the Cerberus Network DLC that's free to those who purchase the game new:
The Mass Effect trilogy is an epic science fiction adventure set in a vast universe filled with dangerous alien life and mysterious, uncharted planets. In Mass Effect 2, players will once again step into the role of the heroic Commander Shepard, commanding their crew of some of the most dangerous operatives from across the galaxy on a mission so challenging that it’s potentially suicidal. Featuring intense shooter action, a rich futuristic storyline, space exploration and emotionally engaging character interaction, the game delivers an unparalleled cinematic experience.

Gamers who purchase a new copy of Mass Effect 2 will also be able to activate the ‘Cerberus Network’, an in-game portal in Mass Effect 2 that will keep fans engaged with the Mass Effect universe through downloadable content (DLC) and news at no extra charge. The first piece of DLC is available today, featuring a new mission around the Normandy crash site. For players who do not buy the game new, the ‘Cerberus Network’ can be unlocked through a one-time, in-game purchase of an activation code for 1200 MS points on the Xbox 360 and $15 on the PC.** BioWare will release additional news on future ‘Cerberus Network’ content in the coming weeks.

97%? I don't trust pre-release console reviewers as far as I can throw them.

And I barely trust pre-release PC reviewers much more than that.

If you used steam you're currently decrypting, if you used D2D you're installing the game.

Yeah most reviewers are fairly biased unfortunately, especially given the amount of advertising $ being thrown around these days you have be wary of reviews. That being said, I think reviews can give you a general feel if a game is garbage or not since a reviewer/website would risk their rep. by giving a garbage game a great review.

A warning to anybody who has the CE version, enter your Cerberus card code in game and NOT on the social site. Seems to be a problem with the card giving the CE armor instead of Cerberus access, tons of people posting on the tech help board about it (unfortunately me included).

I'm very curious about how this content will be offered. I expect that the only free item will be this first item that will show up tommorrow. (ala that free quest that came with DA:O) Then future content will be additional money. I'll give them some credit on creating a way that only 1 owner of the game can use the DLC, that might be effective at making people want to buy new copies of the game, but if that additional content is on par with what we're used to seeing then I think they're just shooting themselves in the foot.

But if it's something more akin to bethesda's stuff for fallout 3 then this could work out well for them. The only game I've purchased DLC for is GTA4 so I don't expect I'll be missing anything...

I'm starting to lose faith in Bioware. The last few games I played from them were just "so so" to me, even though the critics gave the games stellar reviews (not to mention all the hype). Their games are starting to become "wait for a couple price drops before purchasing" type games. Just my personal opinion.

Despite ME2 not coming out in the UK till Friday Game despatched it to me today and will probably end up arriving tomorrow. Not that I'm complaining. Also does anyone know what the install size on the 360 is?

At least when Shepard is talking. That appears as though it's either CGI or a cutscene model. The rest of the game doesn't look (judging from HD trailers) quite that good. Not bad, but still not really fantastic either (it's by no means one of the best-looking 360 games, but definitely in the top quarter or so).

I think you can check if you have this problem here: http://social.bioware.com/user_entitlements.php

Thankfully Steam DDE was fine for me using the Bioware site to register the keys.

Anyone able to tell me if the PC version supports a gamepad? Don't tell me the garbage about how the mouse and keyboard are better...I know they usually are. They just don't work as well sitting on the couch. A "yes they do work, console-tard" or "no, they pulled the same shit as in ME1 on PC" will basically be my deciding factor in which one I buy.

Can't be a CG model. You can make your own Shepard, remember. Everything with your character in it has to be rendered in-game.
