BioShock 2 DRM and GFWL Info

The BioShock 2 Listing on Steam offers system specifications for 2K Games' upcoming shooter sequel, which feature an outline of the game's use of DRM and how Games for Windows is required to play the game (thanks nin via Shacknews). They do not list activation limitations. They list a "15 machine activation limit," reminiscent of the the original BioShock which had lower number of allowed installations until they were removed, and the game will use Games for Windows LIVE as well as Sony DADC SecuROM. Word is: "Initial installation requires one-time internet connection; Ability to save game, earn achievements, receive title updates and online play requires log-in to Games for Windows LIVE; software installations required including Microsoft Visual C++2008 Runtime Libraries, Games for Windows LIVE client, Games for Windows LIVE Client Patch, Sony DADC SecuROM, Microsoft DirectX." The system specs follow.

Minimum:

OS: Windows XP, Vista, Windows 7
Processor: AMD Athlon 64 Processor 3800+ 2.4Ghz or better, Intel Pentium 4 530 3.0Ghz Processor or better
Memory: 2GB

DirectX®: DirectX 9.0c
Hard Drive: 11GB
Sound: 100% DirectX 9.0C compliant sound card or onboard sound
Recommended:

Processor: AMD Athlon 64 X2 5200+ Dual Core 2.60Ghz, Intel Core 2 Duo E6420 Dual Core 2.13Ghz

Rather, they don't want people using each others saved games to boost the inane "Gamerscores" which those with particularly low self-esteem are so obsessed with. That said, I still prefer games come with GFWL for functionality it provides, and have no issue with SecuROM, but am still on the fence in regard to BioShock 2.

Actually, having a low gamerscore results in massive amounts of taunting and bitchery on XBL. If you're under a few thousand, you'll never hear the end of it. I did everything I could to get a few thousand simply to stop the constant "OMG YOU SUCK FAG!, LOOK AT YOUR SCORE!"

Once you get a few thousand, that stops completely. It's ridiculous, and one of the reasons why I didn't play much Halo 3 online.

Wow, they must have changed it. I was able to do that in GTA4 and FO3. Actually, I did it because I never even knew about the GFWL giving you XBL Gamerscore points, so I imported my offline saves into the online directory (Named after my gamertag) and viola, it worked.

Guess they caught on to people using trainers for cheats, then importing the hacked saves to the online mode.

I can see it now- at the most scary point in the game a bright GFWL popup will appear to exclaim I've gotten an achievement, shattering every bit of the game's atmosphere in a million tiny pieces, never to be seen again.

Actually, if you switch from offline to online (Or Vice Versa) you can just physically take the saves and put them in the new profile directory and it works.

That doesn't work in Arkham. I created an online account so I can't get achievements, and I can't transfer it to an offline account to get them. So, I'm screwed, unless I want to start the game all over again. I really hate GFWL. I don't like DRM either, but that hasn't caused me issues.

Will the multiplayer use dedicated servers or p2p?

It's p2p, but really the multiplayer looks horrible anyway - and they plan on having "aggressive" DLC support for the game, which to me means they'll fragment what few people play the game online with crappy map packs, you'll have to buy them with "Microsoft Points" because MS wants you to purchase point cards and not think about how much real money you're spending on DLC.

On a slightly related note: I wish companies would stop going with the stupid Unreal Engine for their games. Honestly, I am sick of this engine and the annoying issues it has with ATI cards. Plus, it's flat out ugly, and games utilizing it invariably just .. feel "weird." I don't know how to describe it, really. Everything is plasticy, and movement and physics are strange somehow. It doesn't feel like a very fluid game, if that makes any sense.

It requires a lot of talent to make an Unreal Engine game not feel or look like a mod for Unreal Tournament 3. Think of games like Mirror's Edge.

Well, technically no. You can build an offline profile and save your game that way. If you want the achievements added to your XBL account tho you will have to sign in. GTA4 was the same way.

On the other hand if you decide to one day sign in your saves on the offline profile are no longer accessible. Retarded, I know.

Lately I find myself spending more and more time on the 360. Despite the PC's superiority as a platform, playing games is simply more straightforward and hassle free than the PC.

I know this because I did it. I also exploited the GFWL achievements this way by importing saves right before the achievements and gaining them cheaply. Surprisingly, it worked. Also did the same thing with FO3's GFWL setup. Loading a level 19 character on the cusp of 20, hit 20 after killing a random baddie and unlocked that achievement for it.

First game was a stupid, WAY overrated waste of money. They think they have enough of an audience to even risk a move like this? HA!

the game will use Games for Windows LIVE as well as Sony DADC SecuROM.

NO FUCKING BUY!

Take Two you do realize this news is going to spread like wildfire. You are going to lose a lot of sales, meanwhile pirates are going to download the non-DRM, non-LIVE version of the game! You schmucks you! You shysters you!

You would think that with ScruRom being such a contentious issue with Bioshock that they would want to communicate a little more clearly as to whether the game has activation limits, unless of course they plan to include them and not say anything until the game is in the post/preloaded, like last time.

I may pick up the PS3 version from the bargain bin sometime around 2012 if the game is worth playing, I don't want those layers of crapware anywhere near my PC.

i sometimes wonder if these guys feel like this kind of shit will make some dent in piracy overall, but they really cant be that stupid... and then you have to ask, well "why should we fuck over the paying customers? shouldnt we want to please the people that actually gave us money for this crap?"

there really has to be something better than DRM and GFWL to handle this, at least - they better hope they can figure out what it is

its like they want to train up better and more sophisticated pirates by challenging them with little puzzles - whoa. maybe they are double agents! maybe these corps want the pirates to get super good at cracking shit so they can just sell the company, give up and go home

I join this statement with full support, I'll wait for a 5€ bargain sale on steam before i ever touch this..

I never will understand it, whats the point of pissing of customers with such crap? Its not features, its not even ease of use... steam is non-invasive at least (so i can BARELY accept it, at least steamworks if its "optional") but GFL is a huge pain in the arse, and i will never accept GFL existing on my PC. Which is a symbol for locking down the PC and unifying it with the x360 and suppress us all under Microsoft rule... how goes the quote "f*ck that sh*t".

Or viva la revolution ;p

Game Details for BioShock 2 (EU release) in my Steam client says:

"3rd-party DRM: SecuROM™ and Games for Windows LIVE
15 machine activation limit"

As if SecuROM by itself isn't bad enough in a Steam release. Think I'll spend the 44,99€ on something else.

If it's like other GFWL games you can create an "offline profile" to save your game to without having to go online, but then you can't play multiplayer.

And if you then create an online profile to play multiplayer you won't have access to your savegame anymore, at least not without logging out and switching back to your offline profile.

Also if you save a game to an online profile, it doesn't actually get saved online, it's still only on your HD. But you'll still have to login online for authentication and decryption of that save game file, to make sure you have permission to use it. Don't want people sharing saved games! That's almost like pirating!

Many games with GFWL requires users be logged in to save games. THIS DOESN'T MEAN ONLINE, it means at least creating an offline account which (automatically) is signed in upon start the game.
