NPD All-Time Top 10

IndustryGamers has a list of the NPD's Top 10 best-selling games of all time, though all-time only goes back as far as their record keeping, which is to 1995. Word is: "Also, this chart does not include PC games and is focused on console/handheld titles." They offer analysis of the following list:

  1. Wii Play
  2. Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock
  3. Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas
  4. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2
  5. Wii Fit
  6. Mario Kart w/ Wheel
  7. Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare
  8. Madden NFL '07
  9. Call of Duty: World at War
  10. Namco Museum

I think in the end all the information is somewhat vague. One possibility is the NPD sales lists don't track games sold in Japan. It still seems awfully incompetent for a company whose job is market research. They are probably trying to sell something and fudging the numbers.

yeah, if vgcharts is to be trusted (no real idea of how accurate that information really is) then the list seems awfully wrong. According to vgcharts nintendogs and New Super mario bros (ds) both sold around (or more) than Mario Kart Wii.

I agree that this list is botched. They obviously used some strange metrics that need to be mentioned for this list to make any sense.

Another big one that's missing is nintendogs, that game sold an insane amount of copies. Something like 22 million+. Also, where is new super mario bros wii? That sold more copies than the PS3 version of Modern Warefare 2.

This list just seems out of whack. Yes, a number of these listed are big sellers, but it feels like there are giant gaps.

On the other hand, if MW2 outsold Wii Fit, its obviously a huge seller. I've seen some posts in other threads about how without numbers you can't tell if its a bestseller kinda thing, which is true to a point. But in a ranked list, you can tell if its outsold something else. As well, if you have numbers for one of the other things on the list, you can at least estimate that numbers for another item were either higher or lower. Plus there's been the huge dollar amounts mentioned by the company, etc.

Guitar Hero III really?

I know my circle of non-PC friends were burned out after 1 and 2 and they then moved on to RockBand, I don't know anyone with GH3.

Wii Play is number one? Most people bought it together with a Wii remote (which made it almost free if you deduct the remote price). So, it IS a bundled game.

But if bundled games are included in the list then surely Wii Sports should be number one. According to wikipedia it has sold about twice a many copies as Wii Play.

I agree that this list is botched. They obviously used some strange metrics that need to be mentioned for this list to make any sense.

Namco Museum? That relatively obscure Playstation game? It seemed to be very niche in the west, maybe it was a massive seller in Japan?

IIRC Namco Museum has Xevious on it, which is apparently still held in very high regard in Japan. And in my house

And, from the bottom of the article:

"James Brightman is a veteran games journalist with more than six years of experience."

...when did six years make someone a "veteran journalist"? That's only back to 2003, at a stretch.

I can only imagine if they included PC games... all of 1 through 6 would probably be a "Sims" game.

Look at the variety of genre's on that list, it's still fairly impressive and not just from a numbers standpoint.

"Also, this chart does not include PC games and is focused on console/handheld titles."

Then the headline should be NPD's Top 10 Best Selling Console/Handheld Games of All Time

That is the biggest joke of a list I have every seen!!!!
2,3,4,7 are the only ones that make sense.....but even then 7 probably shouldn't be on there....wow

NPD is the Kotick of sales figures....
