Star Trek Online State of the Game

There's a State of the Game Report on the Star Trek Online Website where Cryptic discusses progress on beta testing Star Trek Online, the upcoming MMORPG. They discuss stability and performance, plans to tweak alpha strikes, tweaking Klingons, new bridge officers, exploration improvements, plans to remove the level cap, and more.

I have been been playing in the beta and your friend was right ... up until a month ago. Whatever Cryptic the beta has progressed leaps and bounds ahead of what it was a month ago, so much to the point that they must have been holding out on us beta testers. I find the game they currently have out there a a heap of fun and well worth picking up.

Even better ... rather than rely on anyone else opinion, how about you make up your own mind?

I haven a friend who is playing the beta and he says it really is crap and will only continue with the game with the free few months for doin the beta, other than that its just not worth it. The pvp is just as bad aswell as the space battles as its just starfleet command stuff which is just repetitive shit, fly in circle, reverse every now and then, fly in more circles if i remember rightly??

So over all the only people who will be left playing this drivel piece of crap, will be the startrek fans who will end up saying its all there is, so they will put up with it...

Who has the time or money to play MMOs? I picture a person collecting unemployment, sitting there all day eating Cheetos, while grinding away at the game.
Interesting comment .... when you consider most of the people I know who play MMOs are in their late 30 and early 40s, have great jobs, are in stable relationships and have kids.

I guess you need to open your mind a bit more and stop watching Fox News.

That's funny cause...

I picture people who don't have a couple free hours every night sitting there with bitchy wives that like to control every second of their pussy husband's time, and/or people who have 2 or more spoiled rotten, booger eating, kids to deal with.

This.

The game is kind of shallow and repetitive right now but I'm only a LT 5.

Oh crap....my worst fears have been confirmed. I dont need another class dps/tank/healer based MMO thank you very much. Especially one wearing a Sci-Fi skin and raping one of my favorite settings.

P.S. Im not saying the game sucks, Im just saying it would suck for me, based on these mechanics. I would prefer something more in line with the actual way these ships work in the shows

I know they said it plays like that but I have yet to see it. Of course, I'm not very high level.

The game-play gets better the more I play it.

My 2 biggest gripes are the engine needs to be a little more optimized and leveling seems a bit long.

I beleive that doesn't come up until you hit higher levels. To be honest the seems to be pretty solo friendly so far.

Ships are taking roles like fantasy MMOs. Cruisers are tanks, Tactical ships are the rogues/major dps (all ships do dps), Science ships are mage/priest/cc. The complexity of melding gear/character build/ship officers training/ship type leads to some dizzying options. Give this one a *fair* chance if you like Star Trek, you may be pleasantly surprised.

id love to see a proper update to Bridge Commander.. if we are talking about ST ship-to-ship combat

id rather have a open world RPG type ST game tho.. like a sprawling, massive, bethesda kinda thing - in terms of size im thinking "daggerfall era" Wacko

The problem is that it's very hard to justify a project of that scope in the space genre, especially in an IP with a "stigma" like Star Trek.

I'd love to see a resurgence in the genre as much as the next guy, but since the fanbase for it has become tiny relative to the fanbase for other things, I am not hopeful.

That would be a win all around.

The one problem I have with the design of STO is the ground combat. Its like every other click-based MMO. While a lot of folks didn't like Tabula Rasa or Neocron, both devs managed to make a fun hybrid of real time shooter and MMO numbers based ground combat. Other than that I've got no major complaints. I might actually buy this thing next month.

I tried STO and I don't see the "epic fail." It's mediocre at worst. I personally didn't enjoy it much, but I know a few people who do.

Unlike certain people around here I'm not going to go "YOU MUST BE AN INFERIOR GAMER TO LIKE SUCH A PRODUCT." I'm going to let them enjoy what they enjoy, and hope that the game improves so that others might give it a shot as well.

Of course, around here where people are in dire need of emotional stabilizing medication, you might as well label everything an "epic fail." Hell, STO doesn't have lean, so that makes it an epic fail in some peoples books.

Cutter we get it, you hate Cryptic, you have Champions Online, you hate Star Trek Online, and you can't make a single post about it without using epic fail within the first 10 words.
