Op Ed

Ars Technica - What we (and Activision) learned from Modern Warfare 2.
Price matters... PC gaming doesn't matter... You can shove the gaming press around... Microsoft giveth, and Microsoft taketh away.

Kind of goes a bit in the face of Jerykk arguing that PC gamers are smarter than console gamers because its best sellers are better than Halo and CoD. I mean, Spore, the Sims, WoW... all so much better than Halo...

Two problems with your post:

1) You forgot to mention that those are the top-selling games according to NPD. That's limited to US retail and excludes digital downloads and foreign markets.
2) I think you missed all the casual Wii games in the console topseller list. As well as the Pokemon game.

But then, I don't really include that demographic when I refer to gamers. When I criticize console gamers for having low standards, I'm talking about the ones who love Halo, CoD, Gears of War, etc. The ones who read IGN and Gamespot and Gametrailer and pre-order games based on how pretty they look in the previews and trailers. The ones who first started playing shooters with Goldeneye or Halo and think that a gamepad is just as good or better than M/KB. Wii players don't even factor into the equation, much like Sims and WoW players don't factor into the PC equation. To qualify as a gamer, you have to play a wide range of games on a frequent basis. If you only play Wii Fit or Sims or WoW or Pokemon, that's not sufficient. A movie buff is not someone who only watches one or two movies over and over. A gamer is not someone who only plays one or two games over and over.

i wonder if they made enough PC sales to justify the time it took to create that version of the game..
There's no way for us to say for sure since we never saw numbers, but it resided in the top 10 of steam for long enough to assume it did well.

Personally didn't buy it or its predecessor (or waw even though I love coop), mostly due to the pricing.

i wonder if they made enough PC sales to justify the time it took to create that version of the game.. i was thinking "why bother?" but then again the series sells like crazy so why not - but it seems like there is a point of diminishing returns there somewhere

i doubt the next version will be on PC tho

Activision learned that how good a game is is not determined by the game itself but by how much you pay in advertising to tell the people how good the game is. They have made enough money on this game to fund the next three titles, but do you think they will show some appreciation to the consumer with thier DLC. Nope they will sell minimal content at maximum price, I bet thier biggest consumer is the under 17 kids who have no concept of the value of money.

You have to wonder, how well would this game have sold if the kids under 17 were actually prevented from buying this game. Definatly can see why the industry fights tooth and nail to make sure ratings are not enforced at the register. Of course with the lazy ass parenting these days I guess it wouldnt make a difference.

Here's what Activision really learned from Modern Warfare 2:

PC gamers will take it up the ass if the game is cute...and pay even more for it.

Didn't buy it, don't consider myself a hater but I do consider myself a smart consumer. Paying more for less just so Bobby Kotick can crow to the media isn't my idea of money well spent. There's better games on the horizon and too many coming out in the next three months to bother with MW2.
Playing: Ghost of Tsushima, Jedi Fallen Order
Watching: Sputnik, Once Upon a Time in the West, Mortal

inb4 the masses of MW2 haters...

The game is fun. It had, and still has, its problems. Activision are assholes. I got my $60 worth.

Looking forward to Bad Company 2.
