Star Trek Online Borg with Lifetime Subscription

Star Trek Online Website now offers subscription options for Cryptic's upcoming Trekkie MMORPG, which include an option for lifetime subscriptions. This page has word on special offers available only for pre-order customers: Annual subscriptions for $119.99 USD/year which will earn you two additional character slots or a lifetime subscription for $239.99 that also include two extra slots as well as a playable Borg. There is an accompanying FAQ with further details, including an outline of the Borg's special abilities, but nowhere does it say whether the Borg is exclusive to these lifetime subscriptions. After the game's launch they offer three different plans, in US dollars they are $14.99 monthly, $41.97 quarterly, or $77.94 semi-annually. Update: This story originally listed annual subscriptions as $199.99. Apologies for the error.

Also like EVERY OTHER mmorpg launch I've witnessed and heard about, thier servers are not prepared for the load. Thier authentication servers can't even handle the beta population properly.

This in itself though wouldn't prevent me from playing it (since its common to all/most mmorpg launches). Its just an offhand observation.

I sort of defended Derek Smart, and Demigod is a good game (but thats a subjective point of view).

Derek Smart is to be respected for what he does; even if he does fly off the handle publicly. Thats all. Not that his games were amazing.

But remembering my 5 posts spread over 3 years that i've been signed up.. are you Rainman?

Anyway; ya, i like STO. Its fun.

I'm one of those suckers who bought the lifetime subscription. To me, I feel lifetime subscriptions are worth the money if you can see yourself playing it 3 years from now. I don't mean continuously, but it removes the feeling of need to play because you're paying a recurring subscription. I do agree however, that the price is rather high.

I really enjoy the game, the ship combat is excellent (and very thrilling), and the ground game is basically Champions/City of Heroes .. so its solid in its own right.

I really like what they've done with the game, some bugfixing and you've got a real gem here. I'm not going to say its a "wow-killer" in terms of numbers of sales or whichever, but I do believe this will be a successful MMO in the way that it won't die in 3 months.

This will be Cryptic's gem, imo.

This game is coming out soon and it has game stopper bugs still to be fixed. Doesn't give me enough confidence in it to buy anything like a lifetime or even an annual.
For instance, if the servers get reset in certain not unusual cases (servers get reset a lot in new MMORPGs even after release, and the specific condition itself is not unusual either), it will get your character permenately stuck in a mission requiring you to delete the old character and create an entirely new one.

you can run the $$ per month numbers all you want to make yourself feel better. But it still boils down to one thing. Is it worth it to you? y/n.

Paying that much money for a single game is NOT (and never will be) worth it to me.

Though I have to admit, I'm really kinda surprised they're doing the lifetime thing. Like Star Wars, Star Trek is iconic enough that there are a large number of people out there who will buy ANYTHING with the Star Trek/Star Wars/LOTR name on it, regardless of how stupid it is. The iconic nature of the game practically guarantees some semblance of longevity. Star Wars Galaxies is still going right?

You would think they would definitely want to string those people along.

I've been playing the beta on and off with my cousin. I, myself, have never followed Star Trek (my Dad used to watch it in the 90's, that's it) -- My cousin, however, is a real Trekkie. His Dad was an even bigger Trekkie.

I recently started becoming a Trekkie and becoming interested in the older shows after watching the newest movie etc etc..

I tried the game because it looked nice, and more intuitive/friendly than EVE, which pelts your screen with innumerable buttons with no description, and expects you to conquer the galaxy on your own...

It's a pretty decent beta (despite getting kicked off occasionally and having issues logging back in) -- as far as Star Trek goes, I don't know, but phasers are badass.

The starter missions are kinda boring, but they move things along. As long as they don't stop holding my hand halfway through and leave me in some galaxy surrounded by enemies with no way to communicate with other players or a clue on how to get out of there.

In terms of the Borg bonus...

I am Dyslexic of Borg.

Fusistance is retile.

I played through maybe 8 to 10 hours, possibly less and yes it is indeed quite gtindy, but that in addition to the pretty deep customization stuff is probably going to have a niche/cult following; coupled with the overall strength of the franchise who knows it could be a long term proposition.

All I can say is I had fun with it for whatever it's worth.

The economy is struggling and unemployment is quite high, who can afford all this stuff?

I'm waiting for Lego Star Trek.

" Star Trek is a HUGE franchise and I would expect many fans are willing to jump at anything, and this isn't that bad."

Wrong, so very wrong. If there's one group of fans that are meticulous about their franchise, it's ST fans. This game isn't ST in content or delivery, it's ST in name. The Trek fans are already tearing this game apart in so many ways.

Hey Verno, I totally agree with you. It was definitely heavy on the grinding. But I guess I prefer it that way over the newer MMO's which see way too easy to attain level/loot and solo everything. Things have more value when you have to work to get it. I recall in FF, I was level 60 and I still couldn't solo a level 30 goblin.

But its true, each session was 5+ hours or its just a waste of time. On top of that, I think 2 of those 5 hours were spent looking for a white mage or red mage, hehe.

I don't know, I just don't think that time investment should necessarily equate rewards as it promotes lazy design methods like FFXI had. Ultima Online had a better approach and it looks like the newer FF MMO will be focusing on a skill based advancement system much like UO used so I'll check it out.

I just spent my first 90 minutes in the game, and I found it to be incredibly boring. I'm a Star Trek fan. I can't see myself spending any more time with the beta, let alone the retail version.

FFXI was way too grindy, it had a lot of pretty positive elements going but the sheer amount of palette swaps and rehashed Everquest-style grinds were a huge drag. You couldn't just play FFXI for for a few hours, you had to sit down and play for 5+. I hear they eventually shaped it up a bit but too little too late for me.

Wow, gaming has become really expensive these days. Almost 300 bucks for an "unlimited license", that's basically what it is. They're trying to make this look like a bargain because they won't be reaching into your pocket every month anymore. If it turns out the game doesn't make enough money they'll shut the whole thing down... Thanks but no thanks.

The real question I think is this:

Can I cancel the lifetime sub during the first month if I decide that the game blows and get my money back, just like how I did it for Champions Online?

I'm not going to lie, I want the Lifetime subscription to this game...but I don't want to pay almost $300 for it in the end. (Assuming you're going to spend 50 on the game then the sub is costing 240, 290 is the true cost for a lifetime of STO. If they'd said that 240 covered everything, game and sub, I'd probably buy it...and I know I shouldn't. The idea of playing this game for 2 years paying $15 is laughable to me at this point. I know there are going to be times when I cancel my sub in order to wait for more content...like after the first month.

This game needs work. The combat in space is oddly satisfying. It's simple to a fault but it's definitely star trek. I wish they'd make the combat more detailed however. Your ship is basically one object and when you take damage it's just considered hit points, so once your ships hit points are gone then you blow up. I'd rather they made the ships able to take damage in multiple locations and pieces would fall off during combat and you'd have to go to a space dock to repair it.

I'm not as upset about ground combat as many others seem to be. The whole game is simplistic at this point, just like champions you have attack 1, attack 2, and in STO you have a knock down attack that I don't think causes damage, you just smack the person and they fall down. Some of the levels have been impressive, the abby on the undline mission was easy on the eyes.

I think this game is going to do fine. Star Trek is a HUGE franchise and I would expect many fans are willing to jump at anything, and this isn't that bad. I still can't pull the trigger on that lifetime subscription...
