Don't worry about it too much, Blue. If his paw hurts too much for him to stand on, he'll calm down. Even dogs aren't that dumb.
I couldnt disagree more.
My neighbor just had her lab in for an infection in the leg caused by a similar deal to lyme's disease from a tic bite, the skin had broke and you could see the bone. She had surgery on it, dog was ok for 2 days, then chewed the dressings off and you could see the bone again. She would still limp around with her flesh and bone showing!
So - I 100% disagree on that grounds, and also the grounds that my labs will not baby it until better. The torn ligament had to be watched very closely and she had to be crated regularly.
Each dog is different.
I would like to point out that my post was in response to the presumption that the dog had sprained a muscle
. You're talking about dogs with massive wounds and torn ligaments. Obviously, those need care and need to be watched. But a sprain will easily heal on its own.
So it's kinda apples to oranges here.
As for your dog chewing off the dressing and opening the wound again, that's because her instinct is telling her she needs to keep that wound clean by licking it.
