Out of the Blue

The Gunnar-man started limping the other night; he had no cuts or any such thing, so we tried to keep him from being too active to further aggravate what seemed to be a minor sprain. This is not easy with Gunnar, who is sort of a cross between Tigger from Winnie the Pooh and Rocky the Squirrel, as he tends to jump up and down when excited (his standing vertical leap is easily three feet) and fly off the back deck or front porch when we let him out. He seems better now, so we'll put his injury to the test today, as the dogs are climbing the walls after two days without getting out for a run on the doggie trail.

Don't worry about it too much, Blue. If his paw hurts too much for him to stand on, he'll calm down. Even dogs aren't that dumb.

He'll regulate himself to the point where it doesn't hurt so much anymore, then he'll just let loose again. Also, dogs are NOTORIOUS fakers.

My old lab would limp around on his poor, sore paw, playing it up for all he was worth, then he'd see one of his other dog buddies out on the field, and he'd run over like there was nothing wrong with him. And it was only after we'd left again that he seemed to realize "oh yeah, my paw was hurting. Ow! Ow! Ow!" and start limping again. The little sympathy mooch.

I miss my lab...
