It'll be interesting to see those Nvidia vs ATI figures in 3 months time. I hear Fermi is coming in March and is supposedly going to run very hot and be quite pricey. ATI has been churning out great upper mid range cards at reasonable prices and the 5850/5870 shortages are finally over.

Looking at that list makes me sad to call myself a gamer. But I have a legitimate excuse: my funds are low.

All systems I setup now are x64 win7.

Personally I am running 8gig of ram, but that's for dealing with playing with my dev tools and modeling work. I have to say it would be a giggle to try multibox WoW now that I have quad core and all that ram and a new video card (GTX275).

Before I was running a 7900 and a dual core with 2gig of ram, the difference can be felt now as I can run pretty much anything in the highest of settings.

Just seeing the stats is awesome from a development point of view, knowing what customers have capability wise and being able to target who you want. I'd like to see those with DX10 cards and win XP moving to Windows 7 and we might finally be moving to DX10 min requirement (DX11 is very nice, but at least getting to DX10 would be a start).

Then again DX9 is doing it's job nicely considering it's age, it would be nice to skip DX10 support and go straight to D11, which looks likely in the next year or so.

The techie crowd is doing a good job installing x64 on the casual crowd's systems. A lot of OEMs are installing x64 as well thankfully. Driver maturity has helped out a lot, x64 is very stable and no longer problematic unless you have ancient devices.

I thought it was interesting that more people are running Windows 7 x64 than plain 7.
I'm thinking it's about time we got a decent 64-bit version of Windows so that we could add more RAM to our systems. Win7 x64 is the first time MS got it right.

The other thing that makes me wonder is how Steam detects *PHYSICAL* CPU's. It says that 56.93% have 2 CPU's. I find that hard to believe.

That's cores; the survey is saying most people have a dual-core system.

That's why there are hardcore and mainstream segments of the PC market. And if your name is something like Techie714, you're probably not in the latter.

I don't consider myself hardcaore, and I still best most of the stats, with Vista 32, 4 GB system RAM, GeForce GTS 250 1 GB, Primary res 1680x1050 and a X-Fi Titanium PCI-e sound. I do need to get a quad core though ever since I bought GTA IV on sale last weekend.
Consoles are schwag.

And so do i, and it still plays everything just fine - no wonder Nvidia has problems selling their newer stuff

But for example the 8800 is a old video card that is DX10 compatible. Hell I run one myself.

Interesting how the number of DX10 capable systems has risen considerably in recent times...feels like just yesterday that number was under ten percent.

Granted it means more now that its not like years ago where source engine games were the only thing on steam but yeah... source engine games do not require high end hardware to run.

The other thing that makes me wonder is how Steam detects *PHYSICAL* CPU's. It says that 56.93% have 2 CPU's. I find that hard to believe.

For those that do not know... if Valve is using WMI to detect the amount of CPU's that is a big pile of utter fail. Windows XP WMI *CAN NOT* detect physical CPU count properly. Only Vista and 7 can. Win XP sees a single CPU 2 core system as 2 physical CPU's. Win Vista and 7 have two WMI values. One for physical and one for virtual. I have a dual CPU with 2 cores per chip so I have tested this first hand.

Every time I see these results, I think to myself. "Man PC Gamers sure do run a lot of old shit". I guess most folks are just playing Peggle & CS:Source.
