EA on Tiger Woods

As noted earlier, EA has decided to continue its relationship with Tiger Woods. Peter Moore's Blog has the official statement on this, saying "Our relationship with Tiger has always been rooted in golf" (apparently all the other sponsors who have cut ties with the randy golfer had relationships rooted in marital fidelity). The full statement follows.
For the past month, we have watched the Tiger Woods story play itself out while several of his sponsors have stepped away from the golfer. At EA SPORTS, we’ve been particularly attentive because for the past year, we have been in full development of a new and highly innovative, online golf game. The game has been in closed beta for eight months, with more than 75,000 people playing and participating.

Tiger Woods PGA TOUR Online is a breakthrough experience - golfers will love the authentic feel of the course and gamers will be struck by the detail and smooth flow of the browser based experience. We have spent considerable time developing and testing this game; we’re proud of it; and we are releasing it in open beta later this month.

This decision will no doubt create some attention and further speculation about Tiger Woods, and about his relationship with sponsors. With that in mind, I want to shed some light on why EA SPORTS has decided to continue with Tiger on the masthead of this game.

Our relationship with Tiger has always been rooted in golf. We didn’t form a relationship with him so that he could act as an arm’s length endorser. Far from it. We chose to partner with Tiger in 1997 because we saw him as the world’s best, most talented and exciting golfer. We struck that partnership with the assumption that he would remain near or at the top of his sport for years to come.

By his own admission, he’s made some mistakes off the course. But regardless of what’s happening in his personal life, and regardless of his decision to take a personal leave from the sport, Tiger Woods is still one of the greatest athletes in history. At EA SPORTS, we make authentic sports simulations. When we say “It’s in the Game”, it is not just a tag line but a statement about the quality and authenticity of the game experience. Tiger Woods PGA TOUR Online is truly representative of that rallying cry, and a game that all of us at EA SPORTS are proud to be delivering this month to sports fans around the globe.

In next Tiger Woods game, there should be a side game where you choose hot models to sleep with.

Also there's the fact that most of us don't care what he does in his sex life.

Well to most of their market base (young testosterone charged males) Tiger Woods is probably considered a hero for his endeavors.

Oh, right... except men are idolized for having sex with as many beautiful women as they can. Tiger Woods is more of a "hero" now then he was before.

"No excuse can rationalize the behavior. He should get permission or get divorced. Anything else is dishonest. "

I disagree. If I am with someone and she decides to get fat, cut all her hair off like a boy, or tell me she doesn't want sex ever, why is it so bad for me to seek sex elsewhere? In a perfect world this would not be a problem, but the reality is that people change and some people (namely women) think they can cut off a man's sex life due to love.

Trust me I can love one and only one women, but I can screw many with little to no emotion. Lets get real here folks. Women and men are evil, I will give you that, but many men I know put women on pedestals and act as if they can do no wrong. We are both human beings and we have many flaws, lets just put women back in the same game, with the same rules and bring them back down to earth for once.

I voting for "After the Cut"

To Surf, I don't live in the US of A but I did this morning cross the road and spend 20 mins picking up broken glass from around the swings in the park. (broken by kids before I yelled out to them to stop it; I should have made them pick it up then )

Women evil? I hope your gay or your love life is doomed to be a one man hand (two hands does not make it a threesome) Women are no more evil than men, to say otherwise is silly/sexist.

tiger woods' personal image is a product he was selling to these corps. that image is now broken (tarnished, dirty, whatver), and therefore the corps dont want to buy any more of it. its totally relevant and pretty damn retarded you cant figure that out
It's his image AS A GOLFER that they're buying. If he stopped winning 5 years ago and they dropped him, I could see it. They weren't buying his image as an angel. Will EA sell less Tiger Woods golf b/c they don't dump him? Of course not. Neither will AT&T. Ostensibly this is a move to placate a small vocal minority of conservative religious critics, but forgiveness is one of the key tenets of Christianity, the dominant religion in both North America and Europe. So how does this make sense?

I applaud EA for not following the lead of AT&T and other stupid companies. If I cheat on my wife, should my company fire me? It's completely irrelevant.

I agree on the scummy point, however I've always found that putting people up on pedestals like we do with athletes and other celebrities is a bit unfair and silly. We have only ourselves to blame when they f*ck up and become human like the rest of us, showing skill in one area or another doesn't always equal moral superiority.

I definitely agree with that.

1. How do we know his wife wasn't putting out anymore? Maybe she is a total bitch and doesn't feel sexy after two kids that more than likely destroyed her once hot body. There's only so much of a woman's "I don't feel like it tonight..." a man can take before he will look elsewhere.
No excuse can rationalize the behavior. He should get permission or get divorced. Anything else is dishonest. That being said, there's no reason for a company to change its business relationship based on golf with him. Now if he was a Evangelical preacher preaching fidelity everyday, I could see it.

American society is warped, perverted and sick. You can watch movies where people get their heads blown off, drink horse cum (Jackass 2 anyone?) and the movie gets an R rating, watch some tits and ass and its X rated. People like Tom Cruise make 15 million a flick, host costly wars for other countries, spend 80 billion annually on Israel, and forget our own people or those that try to help the ones truly in need.
Well said. Priorities are F'd up.
