The Civ series demands an honourable mention for having proper manuals. Sure, it wasn't entertaining like the TF2 announcements but they were well written, accurate and complete, with a good amount of tips yet somehow not spoiling it. I remember buying Civ IV and actually enjoying reading the manual on the train home.
(NB: they tend to include proper manuals on release and then just include a .pdf on the cheap versions, fair enough).

Not one Origin game listed. All the series had great manuals, written as though from people within the universe. Ultima, Wing Commander, Crusader, I still have the Ultima 6 compendium.
Manuals, Vampire the Masquerade Redemption manual was pretty sweet, got a nice back story book, even had info on what happened to the main characters after the peasant revolt.

"Ultima? Wing Commander? Crusader? What are those?" I'm going to go out on a limb here and say the PC was not even considered when writing this article.

All Microprose manuals were incredible, orders of magnitude better than the best manuals made these days. Some examples: Pirates!, Project: Stealth Fighter. The former included tons of anecdotes from "Cap'n Sydney," the latter included specs, basic blueprints and descriptions of most modern Russian and American fighters. The Pirates! manual is here:

Red Baron, Fallout... you really could go on and on if you included PC games. Sometimes the manuals by Microprose were more entertaining than the games they were for. At least there's a consensus agreement that the original article sucks.
As an aside, it kind of blows that the new Pirates! doesn't support widescreen without a tonne of issues. I even liked the new dancing mini-game - jaunty!

I particularly enjoyed devouring every detailed mech morsel gleaned from the Mechwarrior Titanium Trilogy manual.
I also read Falcon 4.0's manual more than I actually played the game. Ah, sweet memories of the golden age of PC gaming.

Falcon 4.0 was one of those manuals that required the old style big box.
Homeworld probably had the best manual of any game though. Huge amounts of back-story to the game, and even discussions between ficticious characters talking about what space combat may be like. And the art was amazing.
