Leonard Nimoy in STO

IGN has news that Leonard Nimoy, the original Mr. Spock, will lend his voice to Star Trek Online, following up on last week's news that Zachary Quinto, the rebooted Spock, is joining the voice cast of Cryptic's sci-fi MMORPG. Word is Nimoy will narrate "key scenes and events in-game." They quote him as saying: "I'm happy to be involved with Star Trek Online. In this game, the essence of Star Trek -- exploration and adventure -- lives long and prospers. I'm pleased that a whole new generation of fans will be able to discover new frontiers in the Star Trek universe." They have a Nimoy Voiceover Session Trailer to go along with the news.

All I will say is, that if you are in the beta and have read the forums, due to a few xp exploits over the weekend some people were able to access alot more content that is in the game then what has typically been accessible before.

There truly is some meat and potatoes to this MMO besides what limited access people have had in the beta (until last weekend), and there is quite a bit more to the game then combat. Sadly you (currently) don't see very much of it at lower levels. Including some very impressive stuff done with a Starfleet Intelligence group called Section 31.

I'll have whatever Half Elf is drinking.

I dunno... I think ANY space mmo that has more action than that "Watching the paint dry" simulation that EVE is, would be worth the purchase price. I'm more than willing to plunk down $50 for something new and fresh. Like all MMO's my continued subscription will depend on how well they keep me entertained. I pre-ordered, so I get to play open beta... if the OB is REALLY crappy I'll just cancel my order.

Space combat, ground combat, exploration, Star Trek universe... Unless it's buggy as hell, I can't see why it wouldn't be fun to play.

Half Elf, I hope youre getting paid to spread the evangelical word around...

Keep in mind Half Elf also praised Champions Online to high hell and that game (also by cryptic oddly enough) is about as fun as watching paint dry.

Can you link the threads? All I've seen from my look over the beta forums this morning where various thread titles such as

The "Trek" is completely missing
I got bored this weekend
Really dissapointing weekend
This is a great single player title

The one thred that had something good to say highlighted a story series of missions at lvl 14-15 which for a change didn't include kill 10 ships.

Most people don't like the grind of levelling and the uninspiring patrol missions.

I think the game has a lot of promise, it is Star Trek after all, but they really need to get some decent mission writers/creators in to make levelling and grouping more fun. How many episodes of Star Trek, DS9, Voyager etc are there? Surely they can plunder all the missions and plots from tv epsiodes and stick them ingame?

You're kidding, right? The franchise is worth more than ever thanks to the new film and there are a couple more on the way. Just because there has been nothing in the TNG era for a while doesn't mean they simply stop caring. As for whether Star Trek Online will be counted as canon... I don't see it as likely, though it wouldn't surprise me if certain key events they organise become so.

The point was that new film spawned a new universe and all future films will almost certainly take place there due to the positive mainstream reaction to the movie. Even if they jump forward to the TNG years again they would probably do so within the new universe.

Hence my stating they might as well make this game canon and keep the original universe going on some level.

Oh hell yes... grew to really hate these assholes in DS9, hope they keep the essence of Section 31 in this one.

What is the canon status of the game anyway? I doubt Paramount cares about the original universe much at this point anyway, they might as well make this canon.

I guess I better give this another go but my initial impressions weren't good, despite being a huge fan of the franchise.

Interesting, he speaks about the destruction of Romulus being possibly a sinister act by an enemy. That would be insane if true (and if canon).

What is the canon status of the game anyway? I doubt Paramount cares about the original universe much at this point anyway, they might as well make this canon.

hmmm this might be an acceptable game if it involves some effort instead of slapping star trek skins on a wow model.

can't really complain about mmo based on seek n destroy/loot, what else from the star trek world would really translate well into a game? as long as they do the story properly so one would actually want to complete the quests, not be burdened by them, and some of them fine pictures from the nemoy collection are included i just may take a chance on this.

Shame the quote has probably been written with no knowledge of how crappy the game is, given that he seems to think it's about exploration and not just blowing crap up like Trek wasn't.
