Released just two weeks ago, over 2 million retails copies of L4D2 have been sold worldwide and the game appears to be on target to become one of the top selling Xbox and PC titles for the month of November. Sales to date are more than double the original title, which was released exactly one year prior to L4D2. And "Black Friday" promotions during the title's second week of availability in North American resulted in stronger than expected sales in L4D2's bid to become one of this year's best selling releases on both platforms.
"Left 4 Dead 2 is off to a great start with strong support at retail and great reviews from the press," said Doug Lombardi, VP of marketing at Valve. "Meanwhile the title has already been played by over 1 million Xbox LIVE Gold account holders, and news regarding L4D2 DLC 1 is coming very soon."

I think it might be nvidia driver related then (although I'm sure at least part of the blame is valve). Because it didn't used to happen with L4D1 when I used really old drivers (2007 or older). I have 8800 GTS as well (640 meg version). Its only when I updated the drivers I started seeing it.
What soundcard do you have? I have an x-fi

Forums are mistaken then because I have nvidia and still have crashes (the CTD with the one error message popup I think is related to the mall scavange map), and I have sound looping that hard lock my machine (and sometimes spontaneously reboot) like you describe.
It could be that your problems are caused by ati and mine are caused by nvidia, but the simpler explaination is that its valves fault, since L4D1 and 2 are the ONLY games I have that hard crash or reboot my machine. And they definately aren't the most demanding games I've run either.
Prez if they haven't charged ya, I'd cancel them and go pick it up at Gamestop, I think they are still running the PC version for 30 bucks.
GOD FORBID they say how many copies the PC version has sold. If they showed the PC version getting as strong as sales as the 360 developers might have renewed faith in the platform. Why can't they just release a ball park figure? What are they hiding half their sales from the IRS? It's bullshit if you ask me. I also hate how they never give any solid figures when they release their top 10 sellers of each week. Bah, they are Valve and they could do no wrong, right fanboys?
