On Left 4 Dead 2 Sales & DLC

Valve announces that Left 4 Dead 2 has sold over two million copies in the two weeks the zombie shooter has been available, also mentioning that DLC plans for the game will be revealed soon:
Released just two weeks ago, over 2 million retails copies of L4D2 have been sold worldwide and the game appears to be on target to become one of the top selling Xbox and PC titles for the month of November. Sales to date are more than double the original title, which was released exactly one year prior to L4D2. And "Black Friday" promotions during the title's second week of availability in North American resulted in stronger than expected sales in L4D2's bid to become one of this year's best selling releases on both platforms.

"Left 4 Dead 2 is off to a great start with strong support at retail and great reviews from the press," said Doug Lombardi, VP of marketing at Valve. "Meanwhile the title has already been played by over 1 million Xbox LIVE Gold account holders, and news regarding L4D2 DLC 1 is coming very soon."

I think it might be nvidia driver related then (although I'm sure at least part of the blame is valve). Because it didn't used to happen with L4D1 when I used really old drivers (2007 or older). I have 8800 GTS as well (640 meg version). Its only when I updated the drivers I started seeing it.

What soundcard do you have? I have an x-fi

Onboard Realtek HD.
Gives out great sound, was thinking of getting an add-in card though.

Forums are mistaken then because I have nvidia and still have crashes (the CTD with the one error message popup I think is related to the mall scavange map), and I have sound looping that hard lock my machine (and sometimes spontaneously reboot) like you describe.

It could be that your problems are caused by ati and mine are caused by nvidia, but the simpler explaination is that its valves fault, since L4D1 and 2 are the ONLY games I have that hard crash or reboot my machine. And they definately aren't the most demanding games I've run either.

Sorry, misspoke. Other way around. I have the 8800GTS.

After I had a reboot on L4D2, I got mad and went and played DoD Source, which then did it as well. I saw other posts that said the problem migrated into other valve games (L4D1, TF2, DoD Source), which leads me to believe there is something in the code that is causing the problem.

I then uninstalled my vid card and let it install itself with drivers from 2007, and DoD is fine now. Haven't tried L4D2 yet.

Amazon selling it for 29.95 as well.

Indeed, L4D and L4D2 are the only games that crash my Win 7 box. No C2D, just brutal sound-loop freezeup. At least it is almost always during a major, major zombie wave, it's never just creeping down a hallway.

Prez if they haven't charged ya, I'd cancel them and go pick it up at Gamestop, I think they are still running the PC version for 30 bucks.

Done. Thanks for the tip. Remind me never to buy anything from Dell...

I've only had the Engine Error crash 3 or 4 times but always on the Dead Center Scavenge map. And L4D or L4D2 haven't rebooted my machine. They released a patch today so hopefully helps the problems.

GOD FORBID they say how many copies the PC version has sold. If they showed the PC version getting as strong as sales as the 360 developers might have renewed faith in the platform. Why can't they just release a ball park figure? What are they hiding half their sales from the IRS? It's bullshit if you ask me. I also hate how they never give any solid figures when they release their top 10 sellers of each week. Bah, they are Valve and they could do no wrong, right fanboys?

Pretty sure publishers are in the loop already. It's the gaming media I wish were informed of Steam sales and similar things PC related. Most gaming blogs and even major sites act like the PC is completely unimportant.

I am still getting engine errors and CTD. Also locks the game in a sound loop and restarts my machine.

Forums are saying it is possibly ATI related?

DG, simple solution for post patch gameplay...stick to Official Dedicated servers. Otherwise, we wait for servers to get updated. It's still better than having to wait days/weeks for public servers to be updated with manual patches, as in the old days. Or the alternative, MW2, with no public dedicated servers at all.

It also doesn't help server admins when Jason (HLDS mailing lists) seems to be on vacation, and nobody is announcing patches to the mailing lists. We usually get a pre-announcement, and then the announcement of the patch being available.

So, where are all the people who claiming that valve lied about the preorders for L4D2 being better than any other valve title? I'm not going to hold my breath for an apology, although maybe I should dig up those threads and start naming names.

Obviously it was true, L4D2 sold 2 million RETAIL (not counting steam) in 2 weeks. If you look at the numbers for L4D1, it took over 5 months to get to that (2.5 million in 5 or 6 months).

Compare that to HL2 (which was the other title people were claiming had more preorders), it took 2 months to even approach 2 million (1.7 million to be exact).

> pointless moan ahead...

today I spent more than half an hour with servers apparently crashing on or just after connect. Just now I check and there's a patch out - same thing's happened a couple of times before. Bit annoying when this happens on Steam, servers get ahead or behind you and you don't have the option of catching up until the client gets around to it.

Yeah #whine I know, but when you have about 1 1/2 hours spare time losing half an hour to silly things like that is annoying, especially when it means there isn't enough time left for a campaign. Most games give some kind of indication of what the issue is so you can either sort it or go do something else.

The bundle was on sale, don't recall the price though. Buying separately at $8 for the first, and someone has posted a deal at $25 over the weekend for L4D2...if this is too expensive, I can't help ya.
You'll be waiting awhile. The next sale for the bundle I'm guessing will be the Boxing Week sale on Steam.

Krovven: How about bundled package instead of separate? The lowest price for L4D2 I remember was like 30 bucks. Still too expensive IMO. I will just wait.
