Star Trek Online Open Beta Signups

Atari announces a two-week open beta for Star Trek Online will commence on January 12 and that signups for the test are now being accepted for Cryptic's Trekkie MMORPG on the Star Trek Online Website on a first-come, fist served basis. "We are excited to announce the dates for the open beta phase as this is one of the final steps in launching Star Trek Online to the public," says executive producer Craig Zinkievich. "We are looking forward to the launch of our first-of-a-kind MMORPG with anticipation and excitement and we expect Star Trek Online to explode onto the scene, giving fans and gamers a Star Trek experience like no other."

I still can't get any concrete answers as to whether the ground combat will be typical MMO click-fest or real-time skill/twitch based.

Can't imagine the headache of doing a captcha if you're colorblind or something.

I can - it can be very tough.

You could always choose the captcha with squiggly letters. Colorblind friendly.

Also, if you want some solid away team adventure, check out a few of these old Interplay adventure games: Star Trek 25th Anniversary and Star Trek: Judgement Rites. There is some great stuff to check out here.
Don't forget ST: A Final Unity, my personal favorite.

I'm a serious Trekkie, but I agree with you that STO is unlikely to match these older games for gameplay and that Trek feeling.

To be fair, I hate MMOs anyway, so I wouldn't be playing STO even if it looked great. But it would have been nice to see a Star Trek game done right again, which hasn't happened since Bridge Commander. So far the new movie hasn't kick-started the Trek gaming franchise either. All that we've had so far is that DAC game, and the less said about that, the better. I'd love to see a solid singleplayer ship combat game or adventure game in the Star Trek universe. Hell, they could even save on voice-acting costs by using new characters.

I can't say I'm very excited about this game. Each of the different outlets of gameplay just seem so shallow, and well....MMO'y. It's just that these separate parts of STO have been done so much better in other games.

I say if you want a better Ship combat experience, play some Star Trek Bridge Commander with the Kobayashi Maru mod installed.

Also, if you want some solid away team adventure, check out a few of these old Interplay adventure games: Star Trek 25th Anniversary and Star Trek: Judgement Rites. There is some great stuff to check out here.

For me, ship combat is the real tragedy here. Of all videos I have seen for this game, the ship combat just looks so bland. As just a token effort or something. Heck, Star Trek Legacy had more interesting combat than this (: :-shudders-: :). Another sore point, the ships don't seem to have any scale. So far, they feel like little toys or shuttles plodding about. That's a real immersion killer.

I bought the Champs Lifetime Subscription, I got into the Closed Beta at the very start, the Beta goes until at least the end of Jan, and I got free Trek goodies for when the game goes live.

Yeah, really kicking myself for it

Ah, the irony.

A game based in the distant future...

Yet, it looks like a game from the distant past.

Is it just me, or a captcha's getting beyond the ability of humans to do reliability in the first try? It took me three times with this one.

Or am I just getting old, and need to start whining about kids these days?

All I can say is they are doing alot like Champions Online beta, bigger patches, and it's getting better, but not sure if they will be 'better' then champions launch was.

After a quick look and only found the click on the "redeem your pre-order beta key" part for the Open beta.

Guess it's more of a Pre-order gimmick like always.

I like Star Trek and all, but from watching the video with the "It's a tank ship, a dps ship and a support buff ship", I don't expect great things =\

What about people who have already signed up with both STO and Atari beta testing?

Yep I'd like to know too. I had already signed up for the closed beta, so I had a look around their site and couldn't find any other option to sign up for the open beta. If anyone finds such an option, please share it here.

I might pick it up on launch day, but only if I receive a Best Buy gift card or something of the like from someone for Christmas. I never pick up any MMO until its client hits $20 or less; I figure if they're gonna charge me $15 a month they can afford to give the client away for cheap, if not free. If I quit after a month because it's not fun, that's not my fault. So-called betas are a total gimmick these days anyway - the real beta testing begins on launch day, when people can receive the honor and privilege of funding the testing that should have been done in-house. I hear Champions shipped with a hole in one of its maps...

Anyway, Cryptic screws up once again. Open beta isn't just supposed to be some marketing gimmick. 2 weeks tells you nothing, and certainly gives you no real time to deal with those issues before launch. Seeing as I have such low expectations for this game as it is, I doubt I'll be dissapointed.
