Pandemic Closing?

Kotaku has an unconfirmed report that Pandemic Studios will be closed down today as part of EA's restructuring, attributing the rumor to "several sources close to the situation." They say the news will come down today at 2:00 pm EST and that almost all the studio's 200 staff will be let go, with the remainder to be absorbed into other EA development teams. Pandemic's stealth/action game The Saboteur is scheduled for release three weeks from today.

Yes, independent developers will likely take up the banner. And also arguably it will be the ones from the former communist nations of Eastern Europe, where the home computer has been the dominant (and in most cases the only) gaming platform for 30 years. There is a strong home computer culture there that hopefully will resist the encroachment of the gaming consoles.

Every time I say this exact thing I get mocked.
But it's pretty much the way we're moving. UDK and Unity will probably both be big parts of it.

Damn this just in I've heard from sources that 1500 heads have been cut with Tiburon and Black Box getting axed.

Welcome to last week.

As someone said in this thread, independent gaming is the future, especially on PC. I see the mainstream gaming industry getting more and more casual, more and more bloated, while the small dev houses using things like the free released UE3 make games the niche gamers love to play and pay for.

Bioware is only next if the release a couple massive failures in a row, and if they do one could argue they deserve it... not me neccessarily, but someone.

Job security is a thing of the past with most corporations.

So is employee loyalty.
Don't say one caused the other, they eroded equally. Honestly, who here would want to stick with one company long enough to get a gold retirement watch, even if the option presented itself?

Promotion is quicker when you company hop.

Didn't they get bought along with the Bioware deal? I wonder what Greg has to say now. He kept bleating "EA is leaving Pandemic and Bioware alone! They've changed! They're the new EA!"

Yep. Look at how much they've changed. Still killing studios left and right a mere year after they bought them.

Watch out, Bio, you're next...

Job security is a thing of the past with most corporations.

So true. I work in the software industry and for the past 8 years or so, I've been worried about losing my job. With layoffs happening when a company has 1 bad quarter is the norm, there's not a day that goes by where you're not worrying. If you don't want a lot of stress in your life, stay away from software development (unless you're doing it for yourself). Not only do you work a butt-load of hours (basically no life), but you also don't get much compensation when the company does well (no raises after hitting a certain level, etc). And having clueless managers (i.e. the ones that have no idea what it takes to develop something), is pretty standard... which makes your job even more of a struggle. I should have been a plumber.

Just never work for EA that solves most of the problem, they been doing this shit for years

Devs don't have that option, generally.

And yes, since when have we all not had to worry about job security in the past 3 or 4 years...?

Talk about an industry I'd never want to work in. You'd REALLY have to love what you do to deal with that kind of job security issue on a regular basis.
