NCsoft's Profits Way Up on Aion Sales

GameSpot has NCsoft's latest financial reporting, including word that Aion has now sold more than 500,000 units in North America and 470,000 copies in Europe. This leads to some impressive results: "The Korean publisher reported revenues today that were up 112 percent to KRW166 billion ($142 million). Net income during the July-September period soared to KRW46.9 billion ($40 million), a whopping 836 percent year-over-year rise."

A polished MMO keeping players and making money? I wonder if this will catch on.

I'm not convinced it will. WoW has succeeded mostly on its accessibility to the casual player (to the consternation of the lifeless raider).

Aion, while inviting to that same base, looses them quickly when it turns into a painful, mindless, brutal grind in the midlevels. Just about everyone I know that was excited about it at launch has recently given up for boredom.

I'm pretty sure it's probably easy to sell 2.8 million copies of an expansion when you already have 9 million people forking over $15/month

This is true.

to do the exact same thing every single night that they've been doing since the last expansion.

This is not true. Please don't generalize.

Wrath of the Lich King, a mere expansion, shattered records by selling 2.8 million copies in its first 24 hours.

1 million copies at $50 each is $50 million total, and nowhere near all of that is profit only to them. They probably only get $10 or $20 million out of that.

It may be impressive but its also only a fraction of that revenue they are reporting.
